All credit goes to Crota (aka BlizShouter) for pointing this out in one of his casts. So go sub him!

Anyway it works great for photon cannon rush cheese, but I imagine there could possibly be other uses for it. The best way to explain it is to post a video, so here it is:

Really? This is the first time it was brought to my attention, so I thought I'd make a thread.

I've known about using building placement to glitch through walls for a while. It's a decent application for using that cannon rush to eventually push INTO their base and you can get your probe back inside after it's protected.

Not particularly game breaking though, in my opinion.

I thought Blizzard will patch something so the pylon chocke block would not be possible anymore...? So this might not work after the patch?

This is far from a Hack, and from what I can tell you've watched little to no Brood War, if you had you would know this was from BW aswell.

Yeah, that's right, he cannon-contained someone and then used the trick to squeeze the probe in. It's been around for a while, iirc.

Yeah, the same glitch was around back in BW. A lot of the maps had mineral blocks that required players to use this trick to scout.

Pretty nifty glitch that's useful in some situations.

Considering that Pylonblocking is soon being patched, it doesn't really matter anymore.

On a side note, that has been around for a while, and yes, ChoyafOu did this in GSL, but Tastless' vision only skirts it, you see the probe going into the main and the leftovers from the cancled Pylon. Anyways, it exists at least since release.

I don't believe this is actually "patchable." The motion the probe makes when a building is laid down near it is a fundamental to all sc2 units.

Only noobs played Brood War.

So you are calling almost every player in the GSL a noob? Probably half of TL too which played BW at some point?

BW is harder than sc2.... have some respect for people playing BW since they are also dedicated enough to play such an old game for so long.

they really didn't change it much. it still only takes 3 2x2 buildings to block a choke, the ONLY difference is that now instead of being able to attack the cannon with only 1 melee unit, you can use 2.

but that is pretty nifty

Clever use of mechanics which was used in BW too.
Should it be patched? not in my opinion because you can design maps around these type of things which makes the game more interesting.

I was unaware of this, but that's interesting. I don't call it a game breaker because very few are willing to put themselves into that economic hurt to do this. Educational nonetheless because of the applications that are possible for walling off or defending and squeezing a probe out to keep him safe to expand later.

It is good to bring to the attention of newer players, but it has been around for a long time.

As for patching, they cannot patch it.

I have to agree. You can't just come into a community and call 70% of them for "noobs".

OT: Its a nice trick, but this isn't game breaking even in the slightest. Even in that video alone, you can clearly see that he could just have cancled the second cannon and moved the probe through, and the situation would be exactly the same. On top of that: if that probe dies, you have lost the game.

That same motion happens when you have zerglings in the way of a hatchery - the motion is due to building placement. And it happens with all units.

I hope this kind of stuff doesn't get patched yet....I don't see this as very game breaking since the pylon change.

It is very game breaking for laddering. If you are favored you are most likely getting cannoned or 4-gated. if you don't patrol the ramp it's basically -20. Won't matter for leagues, anybody who does this shouldn't be able to win 2-1.

I am surprised it took so long for someone to call this out, considering this sort of "tricking" was used alot in bw. With vultures+mines(not as easy to pull off) and getting probes through mineral lines. Thanks for the vid though.

The "pimpest play" being referred to isn't the probe being pushed through, but the fact that HongUn managed to hold off a rush, having no units, for quite a while by continually building structures further and further back. While, yes, this may be possible in brood war too, it was pretty awesome to watch. Less sc2 hate please.

On topic - I saw this in the choya game, and was wondering how he did this. Thanks!

i remember artosis being shocked because he didn't know it could be done

So did HongUnPrime in his game vs Fruitdealer where he made a brilliant wall in his base to buy time for his VRs to save him the game.

Just look for the thread "Pimpest plays" of Sc2 or something like that, it's there, the "Hongun Wall" game

pimpest plays?... this has been done millions of times in broodwar... they just tried in sc2 and wala! it worked..now people making videos and pimpest plays on it? sheesh sc2 people

Thanks!

You're talking about a different play. ^______^;;

No, pretty sure he used the probe pushed through trick in the same game (I may have to re-watch and check though) - my point was that using probe pushed through wasn't what was special about the game.

aww there was no need to change the ramp via a patch. Blizzard should have watched some of the newer bw maps, where people added doodads above the ramp so you need more buildings to wall off and there was more room for melee units to attack this wall. Would have been better in my opinion. Since it would be easier to place a little doodad at the starting location to prevent a 2 building wall in there. Now people will need to edit the ramps back if they want to make the maps a bit more toss terran favored.

Well in bw the bug was okay since it worked for all 3 races, atleast through mineral patches. Well terran could land barracks and squeeze alot of units through a mineral patch or i think spidermines worked as well. I think now only toss could do it and maybe terran with a bit of scw movement luck.

Seen this a while ago - But now that it's been released, it'll probably be used more often. I usually use this for cannon contains v Z

I thought this was common knowledge, otherwise I would have posted it, too.
I used this alot in PvZ when I had Steppes not voted down.
On shakuras it can be very good when you open forge first and your oponent hatches first. This way you can get a probe in to scout what he is doing. Is he droning, is he expanding at the back? Is he trying to blingbust?
With the information you get by sending a probe in this way you can easily counter everything while expanding and outmacroing :p

EDIT: In bw this was also very common. Some map layouts were made so that you needed the trick to scout or rush your opponent.

I think they are fixing it in this upcoming patch..they are changing it to where to completely block off you would need 3 pylons so 300 mineral investment plus the 150 for cannon. honestly though 2 zealots would work more effectively.

I like these kind of "tricks" like the probe warp by, how workers can bypass units if you click on minerals, etc

I dont see them as game breaking in any way but I can see how they were "unintended"

Skip to 2:00 to see the actual 'trick'.

I didn't know this was possible in SC2 still. I play Zerg so I never really thought about it, but I guess it's something I'll have to watch out for when Protoss blocks my ramp :O

They're fixing the wall-off issue, but I hope they don't fix this little trick. It's not necessarily cheesy, and it adds a bit of depth to the game. It's nice seeing when the pros have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves. And also, "glitching" units to go where they shouldn't has been around for ages, and is an important strategy point to be aware of.

I can't even figure out why this would need to be patched? IMO, BW mechanics that transfer should stay as they are. Not to mention as a Protoss player this type of shit gets me all giggly. I love when some type of abuse finally goes Protoss' way. Then the patch-hammer falls. Ouch my feelings.

On another note, this isn't a hack.
