So we've got a new poll based on the responses so far. Thanks a lot to everyone who's posted so far, everyone's been a huge help already but its the TL community so i wouldn't expect anything less

Looks like what we might be able to do is have a $10 entry fee for a LAN event in San Francisco. This includes food and drinks, like pizza and soda, tbd. And hopefully some prize pools for a 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4 tournaments. Nothing major, between $50-100 for each, and maybe some stuff based on if we can get some sponsors. Maybe give away a few handsome nerd t shirts and other stuff (other stuff dependent on sponors :D) So would you guys be willing to pay $10 for an SC2 night and meet some other sc2 fans? Would you guys come out to watch, have food, and maybe get some give away prizes? Let me know!

Poll: Would you pay $10 for LAN event?

$10 entry fee, food and drink, few prize pools (38)

No (7)

Would oay $10 and just come out to watch the tourneys, meet people, food, and maybe win free stuff? (5)

***ORIGINAL POST Hey guys, I'm trying to set up a LAN tournament in San Francisco sometime in either late March, April, or possibly even May but I'm having trouble figuring out how I could go about creating a successful LAN event. I will attempt to find sponsors, but if not I was wondering if people would pay to play in a LAN tournament. So would you guys pay like $25-30 to play at a LAN tournament of 64 or maybe 128 with a prize pool of about $1000 for first place, and like $250 for second place? A good portion of the entry fees would be used to pay for things like the space, equipment, and the like. Now if we did host this event we would invite/fly out a caster like Day9 or Husky and it'd be open to the public to come out and watch and everything. So would you guys? Just curious to see if hosting an event like this would be possible and what the interest in it would be. Thanks! ******

Hellz yeah, I would pay. It just adds to the prize pool. I wouldn't make it go above $10, I'd do it donation based. As in $1 minimum, $10 max. All that will be added to the prize pool.

Get sponsors for free gear and the usual is charge $25 for the tournament and $15 goes to the cost of renting the venue and the $10 goes to the pot where the pot is split 60/30/10 between first, second, and third. If you can get everyone to bring their own and do the event at a university or something like that then you can put $20 into the pot and the $5 towards food and drinks for everyone.

It's illegal. You need special permission from Blizzard, which likely involves paying them money, to host an SCII tournament with entry fees. So no, I would not.
Man, do I not keep this up to date, or what?

getting that permission doesnt require payign them money where the heck did u hear that. you make it sound like its very hrad to get in which case its not... blizzard wants you to host tournaments just they want to make sure they are regulated accordingly.

Charging for entrance to the LAN event is legal, you just can't charge people specifically for a SC2 tournament. You're going to have to get license from blizzard anyway so make sure they're ok with charging players for LAN especially if SC2 is the only game at the event.

Ohhhhh wow okay thats all really good to know! The only reason I'm considering charging for the LAN is that i have no idea how to offer up a decent sized prize pool to get a good number of people to come out. And as far as sponsors go I did find a few that I'll be talking to soon, but I was under the impression that sponsors usually just gave you their stuff to give away and as prizes, do they give you money sometimes too?

If you're looking into setting up a tournament, I would recommend watching day[9]'s King of the Beta Post Mortem daily. It's extremely informative about how much work setting up a tournament is.

Yeah they give you money, that's the whole point. It's basically an advertising expense.

If you host a LAN party, take entrence fee. Then use some of that money to host the turnyes you will have.

sponsors give you xxx, you give them advertising.

xxx can be anything.

You tell them your running a tournament with 68 players, and afterward the tournament will be casted, and your wondering if they would be interested in sponsoring the tournament.

They say, no gtfo jk.
They say sure we can give you this product, or we can give you $xx for the winner; BUT
sponsors will have huge numbers of stipulations, you might want to tell them you'll do some of these things upfront, so they know what they're 'buying'.

[li]mention them as your sponsor several times in everygame[/li]
[li]advertise them as your sponsor in all advertisements of the tournament[/li]
[li]spend at least $xx of your own money in advertising for the tournament[/li]
[li]make a page on your site with video, pictures, etc, of the awesome prize from the sponsor[/li]
[li]have a banner from your sponsor at the event[/li]

Basically, they want you to spend money on your tournament, because you were probably going to spend that money on your tournament anyway, and they'll give you a little extra.

It really depends on how large the event is, how popular it is, and how good of a negotiator/speaker you are.

think of it this way, they could spend that same money elsewhere on some actual advertising, why should they spend it on you instead? (because your going to have the people at your tournament seeing **sponsor's name** in their sleep).

The censes of that thread is that:
online buyins are a no go
LAN buyins are a maybe

LAN buyins are sort of like going to a party, Yeah, you could have stayed home and ate pizza for less, but you wouldn't have all these awesome people around you!

So I'd say that $25 seems a little steep... but if it were $10 for pizza n' drank (and it were in philly), I'd be there.

You probably want to hit up razor, logitech, hp, dell, AMD, intel, sound blaster, etc.
get either some free gear or some money.

and oh, some sponsors will have a problem with you having other sponsors... like intel would want to be the 'exclusive' sponsor, and you wouldn't be allowed to advertise or receive anything other than intel. And obviously razor and logitech are competitors, just like hp and dell, so you wouldn't want to try to get hp as a sponsor right after you sealed a deal with dell, ya' know?

ohhh i see. so the difference is charging to get in, but if you charge for the LAN tournament that's illegal or where you would need to contact blizzard?

But no the buy ins were only for LAN event, none of the scenarios were online.

Hmmmm, well the thing I'm wondering is that the sponsors usually ask who else you have sponsoring the event but I guess that's cuz they dont want their competitors there too

$25 dollars is too much, you're right. but that was just to try and have a decent sized prize pool. But i guess that potentially can be covered by the sponsors. any idea how much they would generally give? Cuz me and my buddies r prolly going to shell out somewhere between 100-300 bucks to get the place, food, and whatever. So say we also front a $250 prize for the winner(s) and spend a little more upfront, but then that $10 entrance fee count for everything included? Food and prize pool, maybe some SWAG from sponsors Would that be breaking any rules or require us to contact blizzard?

I wouldn't mind Intel being the only sponsor :D thought that's unlikely.

Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $10 (maybe $15 if including food/drink). The main concern I have (and probably many others) is that they are not good enough to win any prizes, which can suck. But for $10, it may be a good opportunity to check out a tournament event, hang out, or whatever and not a huge problem if you lost it. It would be about the same price as going to the movies or something.

Yeah I think a $10 entry fee which would include food and drinks would work. Then hopefully all we need is like 1 sponsor, and lets say we get $250. (I don't know if I'm dreaming and this is a lot or reasonable) We could spread that out over 3 tourneys???? 1v1 gets 100, 2v2 get 50, and 4v4 gets 100? Seems doable right? Food and drink, and a small decent prize for the people who come out. Plus I think i'd like to get a few handsomenerd tee shirts to give away somehow

I gotta say, I'd pay 10$ just to come out and have a good time if events like these happen to be in the SoCal/OC area.

I have paid much more than 10$ many times for concerts, shows, and nightclubs. An SC2 event is nearly guaranteed to last longer than any of those, and be just as much fun for myself and my friends.

One caveat I would add is to be able to bring our own setups and play while we're there

Oh yeah i forgot to add that, thanks Zombies! Yeah it would be BYOC because say 60 people show up, there's no way we'd be able to secure 60 computers that can run SC2, let alone 15-20!
