I've done it my fair share of times, and I've never been BM'd for it.
This is how I look at it too. If there was a game played and he lost then sending him an unsolicited message would be BM. But if he just left at the start of the game it shouldn't be BM to send him a message. I feel this way and I'm one of the people that gets irritated if people send me unsolicited messages after I lose a game. If I just left a game at the start I would totally expect the other person to send me a message. Not BM.

The opponent went to a fast expansion after a barrack. I went to a marine-hellion-medivac timing attack while expanding behind. I checked the history of my opponent and he has never been to platinum in 1v1 matches.
