It all started on a Tuesday morning. I had just arrived in Korea the night before to visit my girlfriend for a week, and was a little jet-lagged and weary. My girlfriend was finishing her graduation thesis, and would have absolutely no time for me for the day. I decided to do a little surfing while I waited around, looking for things to do so I wouldn't waste my one week of vacation. I ended up on teamliquid, and lo and behold, there was a post for GSL 3 Prelims D2! After quickly making an account (I've been lurking for over 5 years), I asked if anyone knew where it was taking place. If there was a dedication for this post, it would go to estee, who told me the exact location. I told my gf, and after she gave me a loving "gtfo, I need to concentrate," I was on my way!
I got there at approximately 3PM, and I was not disappinted at all. I got to the 7th floor of Sindorim Techno-Mart, and the elevator doors opened to this:
![[image loading]](http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2893/imgp0158z.jpg)
Half of an entire mall floor dedicated to e-sports. This was my first live event that I have ever been to, and even being prelims, it was just breathtaking. Rows computers meticulously set-up, players hunched over challenging the physical limits of actions to be taken place by the human hands in a single minute, crowds of spectators and players outside staring at an awkward trying to catch the game of a favorite player... and me!
I looked into the closest glass window and counted myself blessed. The first player I got to take a look at was none other than...
![[image loading]](http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2669/imgp0160s.jpg)
It was a treat to see HuK, with his HuK pillow peaking underneath from his bag. I stood their just captivated by his hand and screen movements before moving on. I made a quick walk through, and found Team EG at the other end.
![[image loading]](http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/7103/imgp0163x.jpg)
Idra was shaking his head at a game and iNcontroL shadowing over his shoulder. It felt strange seeing these guys up close to me. They always at least had some sort of quasi celebrity status in my mind, but now they were just mere feet away from me, only separated by a thin glass wall.
Well I decided to say screw it to the thin glass wall and made my way into the player zone. I walked amongst the greatest SC2 players mankind has ever known, and they were men, just like you and me. One staff tried to ask me if I was a player, so I inacted the greatest ability that I had, one that trumped the majority of the players there. I quickly spoke English. I didn't have anything prepared, so I just said "I'm with e-sports." It just came blurted out, yet composed. If having a girlfriend in Korea and having had multiple trips to Korea taught me anything, it was that Koreans were afraid of speaking English, especially to strangers. Luckily this case was not an exception, and the guy opened his mouth, let it hang there for a second, shook his head and said "ok," before moving on.
With this I had free reign.
I first made my way over to HuK. I met GimbleB and this Swedish guy (I think), and shortly after Artosis, all watching the showman himself.
![[image loading]](http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/1628/imgp0166e.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1681/imgp0168b.jpg)
Artosis was walking around filming some members of interest. The guy is seriously focussed and prompt at giving out good coverage. He was walking up and down and always on the ball, capturing as much as he could on his sweet compact camcorder. On top of that, he's such a nice down to earth guy! Despite being busy, he still gave me his time, answered my questions, and really awesome about it all. If there was some sort of Global Ambassador of Starcraft position, I would give him my vote in a second.
![[image loading]](http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4706/imgp0169y.jpg)
I had the pleasure of seeing HuK forge in base cannon rushing some chobo on what I think was the third set of the third qualifying match. PvP. HuK has balls, and he knows how to be showy. He made the guy pull most of his probes and kept a big econ advantage. After losing all of his cannons but not his pylon, he made a cannon in base after seeing a zealot and a few probes coming in, then just snuck a probe around and planted 3 more cannons on the high ground, forcing an instant GG. or ㅈㅈ. I gave a quick cheer, and GimbleB quickly gave me a polite "stfu." My bad there, but I couldn't help but be excited watching HuK pull that off.
Artosis or GimbleB then pointed out the window for me to see..
![[image loading]](http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6261/imgp0171c.jpg)
Foxer!! In the pink shirt. In a city where guys mostly dress on the grayscale, Foxer stood out like a sore thumb that was immune to Banelings. More about that later.
![[image loading]](http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3025/imgp0173x.jpg)
This was where the finals of each group match took place. 8 computers, 8 players at a time potentially, only 4 pass. A true stage for the manliest of men to play on.
![[image loading]](http://img573.imageshack.us/img573/9498/imgp0175.jpg)
I don't know who this guy was, but mein gott he was ESTATIC to qualify! This is one of the parts that I've always missed, having lived events through Teamliquid coverage. I mean, I've seen it in VODs and what not, but I have never been close enough to see the guy jump up, yell out and pump his fist with enough force to shatter the hardest thing a nerd could physically shatter. Live is just something.
![[image loading]](http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/1015/imgp0176.jpg)
This was another moment that was just great. We focus a lot on the big names (and this guy could have been a big name, I wasn't sure), but just walking around the venue, you could catch some really great SC2 everywhere! I watched this guy play some wicked TvT, just demolishing well placed seige tanks with relentless aggressive marine and medivac micro. These treats were just everywhere, you just had to be there, milling about.
![[image loading]](http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1843/imgp0178h.jpg)
Speaking of treats, I saw a little crowd form. Who could this be?
![[image loading]](http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4837/imgp0181j.jpg)
I jumped when I saw him. The guy I have admired and copied ever since I had learned of the existence of progaming, the Emperor himself, was right in front of my eyes! I knew I would have to hunt him down before leaving. I had immediately made it a life goal.
![[image loading]](http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/1466/imgp0184.jpg)
The Emperor getting comfortable.
![[image loading]](http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1192/imgp0186.jpg)
The mini-Emperor setting up.
![[image loading]](http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2024/imgp0190v.th.jpg)
Spunky and his gf. Lucky guy, eh? Spunky is seriously one of the nicest guys I have ever met. At this point I had gotton over being starstruck, and had the pleasure of chatting it up with him. He told me he was happy with his team and GSL despite the teamkills. After a few words about this and that, I left knowing that I would be eternally cheering on oGs. Such a nice guy!
![[image loading]](http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/148/imgp0197d.jpg)
Here I got *cough* that guy *cough*, ToRch, Artosis, Idra, Ret, and iNcontroL, checking out group final matches. I snuck my way in, laughed at their English jokes until iNcontroL noticed I was a foreigner, and thrust me into the group. Man those guys are great. I really felt at home there, despite not being being close to a Tier 1 Starcraft player, just a mere fan.
![[image loading]](http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/9060/imgp0200w.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/1390/imgp0198n.jpg)
I don't know who this guy is, but I watched one of the most entertaining macro/micro games of the day on his screen. In a PvZ, they were trading back and forth over and over. Finally two huge armies came face to face, Collosus Stalker HT on one side, and mass Ultra Roach and maybe ling or hydra on the other. They met at a pretty wide choke and blasted away. With Collosi in the back, HT in the middle and Stalker at the front, this guy quickly blew through his storm, blinked the Stalkers behind the HT, and made archons to create this weird Archon morphing wall. With creep spread, you would think that the Zerg army would run over this composition, but the morphing in Archons made the Ultras stuck long enough for the Stalkers to make mincemeat out of them and come on top of the battle with a huge supply advantage. I cannot tell whether it was on purpose or a beautiful flue, but it was quite a game to watch.
![[image loading]](http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/4334/imgp0202.jpg)
HuK setting up for the finals.
![[image loading]](http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7886/imgp0203s.jpg)
Artosis deligently interviewing a winner, and calling BS on the guy's "I got lucky."
![[image loading]](http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5471/imgp0204l.jpg)
Foxer watching his Primates (hahaha). I swear, since the addition of Foxer, Banelings just do not work on Terran Primes. It was sweet watching the games. Seiged tanks in front of Bioballs, last second medivac pickups to avoid Baneling death while maximizing kills. Watching Primes is just great.
![[image loading]](http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7461/imgp0205h.jpg)
Idra playing the finals. I just found out here that he plays on lowest graphics settings. I found that really surprising. TorcH told me why he does it, told me how medium would probably be best, being able to see cloaked units and FF must easier while not being distracted from the excess graphics of high settings. It was really nice to hear insight from the Pros. I was talking to Ret while we were watching the 3rd set of HuK vs Aya, and listening to him telling me how the Terran army composition was just solid for Scrap Station and why was just awesome. I felt like I had a much better understanding of the game just by having a few minutes of conversation with these guys while watching the game in real time.
I also have to let you guys all know, HuK is just awesome. Despite losing a really tough game and not qualifying, the guy just walked right over to his opponent and shook his hand, congratulating hin on qualifying. It was painfully clear how bummed out he was, but he kept composure and sportsmanship to the end. Through the many hours that I was there, I have never seen anyone else do that. I tip my hat off to you HuK!

Ret checking out TL during downtime.
![[image loading]](http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/7199/imgp0208d.jpg)
July and his single entourage. That guy looks fierce up close!
![[image loading]](http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/5418/imgp0212a.jpg)
My Gem of the night! Meeting Boxer, shaking his hand and having a chat with him was just awesome! Despite having superstar status among these guys, he is the most down to earth man ever. Actually, he actually seemed afraid of me and my English, and was just flustered after HuK was like "Why no smile Boxer?" I met his fiance too, and she's just a great girl. I switched to Korean and we chatted a bit, and I just had the time of my life, meeting and talking with my idol. I wish the Slayers Clan and soon Team the best of luck!
![[image loading]](http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/7611/imgp0213.jpg)
Me and a bunch of white guys, wooo!
![[image loading]](http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/2948/imgp0214.jpg)
Me and the soon rising star of Slayer clan! This guy is awesome... but I seriously have to write down his name. I'm going to have to troll until I find it again. He's really fun to chat with and I'll cheer for him when he qualifies... in season 4.
![[image loading]](http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8360/imgp0215.jpg)
I caught Foxer eating a donut and pulled him aside for a picture. At this point I was glad that Koreans were too afraid to approach the stars and ask for pictures, as there would probably be some sort of huge queue. Foxer is a shy guy (to foreigners I guess), but he's great none the less.
![[image loading]](http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6876/imgp0216q.jpg)
Me and the sexiest man alive! I can't even start to think of what to write, as July is just such a fun guy! Not a lick of English, but he knew how to chat it up none the less.
![[image loading]](http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/5980/imgp0219.jpg)
My finals picture is with GimbleB and Cella. Cella is like a literal bridge between Foreigners and Koreans along with Spunky. He helped me through quite a conversations with progamers. I have to buy this guy a drink later on for sure.
Well, that's it for now as I'm short on time. I also had the treat of going over to the oGs-Liquid house the next day, and I'll write more on that later.
Take it easy TL, peace out!

Wow, awesome post, read it all. I wish I could do something similar one day, but I don't think it will be possible. Korea's just to far, and expensive, and they don't have MLG events in Vancouver from what I know. ='(
Aww well, awesome post a great pictures. Neat to know that a lot of the Koreans are down to earth. =)

Honestly best 3rd post ever made. Just curious why people lurk on TL for years but never post? Is it very intimidating? I guess the reason I lurked for so long is because I thought I could not input anything useful, or give anything to the community.
|
happy birthday sir from one retired lurker to another, welcome to TL!

I lurked around on these forums since 2003/2004, and just recently signed up. There were a lot of reasons why, I guess, mostly what you say about not having something relevant/useful to post. I felt pretty much like just an average fan. Also back then I was rather shy, even on Internetforums
|
A really good post, made me feel like I was there... Unfortunately that won't ever happen
|
i never really envisioned how it would be to go but i probably wouldn't have imagined it as amazing as your pictures look like. also your post itself is great, really nice writeup and nice balance of text and pictures.

Dude, my envy of you has no bounds. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
J/K, <3 every one of the pics, especially the ones with July and Cella. I sincerely hope Cella does well and finds a really good team because he's an absolute baller of a guy. I was so bummed to see him not qualify .
|
Wow what an awesome day you had! Can't wait to read the rest!
|
Super duper awesome ^^ Kudos to you for bringing and sharing this up.
I really envy you that you can be there in Korea for this ^^
One day I will be there
|
Awesome coverage there Really sets a scene that i'm sure many have been curious of.
|
So you just casually bluffed your way inside and took pictures and had a chat with all the pros? RESPECT dude! That's quite a baller move you pulled there, awesome
Foxer looks like he might break if he smiles a bit more. July just looks awesome. I really hope he goes far this GSL!
What's up with most Asian people sticking up 2 fingers? I was in Japan last week and everybody was doing it over there also. Just an optional social convention or does it mean anything (other than victory). Because the reason given on wikipedia seems somewhat far fetched...
In short: Awesome pictures!
|
Thank you for that great post!
|
Jealous.
So jealous.
But you don't know Sen? Shame on you! :D
|
Wowowowow nice.
I would have probably been one of the Koreans "too afraid to approach the stars and ask for pictures," hahaha..

Awesome awesome post! Anytime someone asks me something that I feel giving the answer to would be detrimental I will now answer "I'm with esports". lol

Ok, I've come to the conclusion that I might overuse the word "Awesome" a little too much. But here it goes:
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME
Oh man, we really need more people like you around. This is what glorifies TL as a whole!

Great post! I'm going to teach English in Korea in February, I'll definitely have to try your hilarious "I'm with esports" line at some point and check one of these out first hand.
|

|
This was so cool to read! I'm extremely jealous that you got to meet all of these people and be around them for this huge event. Someday I would love to go to Korea and experience all of this too but I don't think that it's in the cards lol.

Great read @OP.. must have been so much fun. =)

omg i love all the pictures hahahahah huk saying why no smile.
|
Awesome! Thanks for all the pics and descriptions

Thanks for the tour, Richard
|
Awesome read! This is what's great about the starcraft community, as opposed to, say, the call of duty community, where the only words people know are gay, fag, lag, and hacker.
|
Cool pics! By the way "that guy winning" is Sen, a very well known Taiwanese player. And you mentioned talking to some swedish guy(s) well that was probably Haypro and/or Jinro, who both qualified and are worthy of your knowing their name :D
|
I want to go to the qualifiers SO badly, you made it look absolutely amazing.

Awesome post! Thanks for sharing your experience--it's what most of us at TL will ever only dream about.

Wow this is awesome. I'm so jealous for being able to have that experience. Thanks for the great pictures!
|
Super-awesome post! TY so much for sharing!!
I guess the only thing that could've topped the experience you had was to actually have registered in time to play! It would've been a blast to be seeded against a "known" player. :D
Thx again.

Awesome read. I love hearing about how nice everyone in the foreigner community is. Even these big name guys like Ret, Artosis, and iNcontroL seem to love just chatting and meeting people from the community.

What a great read, happy that your gsl 3 experience was so great richard!
|
Thanks for all of the pictures and the great writeup! I'm really glad that the pros are so approachable, that is what truly makes SC2 as an esport great.
|
Great read, loved all the pictures. I like Foxer even more for what he's wearing :DDDD What does it say on his hoodie?
|
man seriously i have nothing against Foxer, and he is a great player and all but there is something weirdo about that guy, he looks so feminine in the picture, not only the pink clothing but his pants, shoes, the way he stands, really weird in that picture with our poster
|
Very good read, it sounded like fun! Maybe someday I'll go to Korea for some E-sports fun...
|
Thanks for this.
"I'm with e-sports." LMAO.
I bet the reason there weren't queues to all the pros was because the regular people weren't allowed in the 'gaming' zone?

Forgive me for wanting kind of a "respectable" image for e-sports and not e-hoodlums.
|
This is probably the best GSL thread I've read so far and one of the most enjoyable posts I've seen on TL. My hat is off to you, my good sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
On a related note, I felt too awkward to walk up to all the guys at MLG Dallas. I'm not an introvert or anything, it's just that I didn't want to bother them since I figured they'd be tired of getting mobbed. I know iNcontroL and a few others say they love to talk to people and that (by the way, awesome of him that he pulled you into the group -- he's a great guy and I am continually surprised that people trash him sometimes), but I didn't want to annoy them after all of the rounds they'd just went through. But, hey, I sure as hell plan to go to more events! :D

Totally agree, hence I propose that from now on all players must wear a suit and a tie to their games, and speak with a posh british accent. All other hoodlum-ish behaviour will be fined by the players association.
Edit: also huge props to op for bringing us awesome coverage.
|
That's so awesome ! I hope I can go to Korea one day...
|
Much respect for the post. And much respect for anyone wearing a hoodie and using signs while getting media attention.
|
Wow man what an awesome post!!!!!!!! Thanks!
|
Was worth the 5 year wait for a post of this quality and dedication to a game thats barely out 4 months. I am serisouly thinking of going to an mlg or gls tournament in spring/summer next year. If GimbleB can step up so can i.
Scotland baby
|
great post! except...
"Here I got *cough* that guy *cough*, ToRch, Artosis, Idra, Ret, and iNcontroL, checking out group final matches. I snuck my way in, laughed at their English jokes until iNcontroL noticed I was a foreigner, and thrust me into the group. Man those guys are great. I really felt at home there, despite not being being close to a Tier 1 Starcraft player, just a mere fan."
I love how you NEVER mention Sen in that picture and the one where artosis is actually camming him =[
and foxer looks so funny in the picture with you and him lol
once again, great post =]

Awesome post, I think I'll make it a point to get to an MLG next season. But I'd really like to meet BoxeR. I can't imagine why I would ever be in Korea, but maybe one day right? Maybe he'll come to another American event like Blizzcon.

great blog! hope you enjoyed it!

Wow. Awesome times, it looks like!
I've met Boxer and Artosis before as well. Boxer is so considerate to his fans, it's amazing. Just seeing him around fans is enough to make you realize why he's the face of Korean esports, and how and why BW became so big. When I met him, he literally had to be dragged away from his fans lining up by Oov, and he was apologizing as he was being dragged by the arm.
Artosis is a chill guy. I don't think you'll meet anyone who loves SC in general as much as that guy does. (:

Wow! I did not expect to be Spotlighted or have this much response at all. It was already a pleasure to share my experience, but you all brought it to a whole new level!
Thanks again to estee for pointing me in the right direction, you're awesome man =)
Thanks to the Admins for Spotlighting my post for TL to see! Thanks to all of you for your wonderful compliments and the birthday wishes, and enjoying my post so much, that was just great XD. And thanks for the signature suggestion, it has been done!
Now to address a few things:
1. I'm sorry I didn't know who you were Sen!! You look like a really cool guy, let's hang out next time I'm there!
2. Foxer is girly, but has no ass. It's just flat as a board there. Nothing dividing his ass bones from the chair save some skin. But putting that aside, he definitely has a distinct personality that will forever set him aside from other progamers, so I really don't mind his choice of style. He's already proven he has rather large balls anyways =p
3. My friend has called me Richter for 6 years. A few people have agreed that I share some features with Mr. Andy Richter, but I guess it's official when you hear it from TL!
4. It was really nice meeting you guys GimbleB and Carefoot. I hope training is going well. Have a great experience in Korea, and lots of fun! Sorry to hear about the cold buddy.
With such great response and support, I'll do my best to attend some events and give you all the amateur update =p. Until then, take it easy and remember:
I'm with e-sports
|

Tremendous blog! Must have been a lot of fun to go meet those guys. I'm crazy jealous of you're seemingly common trips to Korea. I've never left Canada, so pretty much anything concerning Europe or Asia seems like another world. Are you still living in Canada? Those plane trips must be brutal >.<
|
Sweet would be so awesome to get to meet the emperor
|
I wanna hang out with boxer(slayers) and julyzerg also :<<< and get drunk with cella :DDD

|
Great topic, kind of capturing the whole festival feeling of the event for us people stuck in cold, snowy europa.
Them some nice guys !
|
This is awesomeness. This is the type of thing that is just so much fun to see and read. I love the pictures and insight. I have never been into esports at all until Starcraft 2 came out. I play games quite often, but never payed attention to the professional scene. I stumbled upon TL after SC2 came out and have been since completely sucked in. I spend more time watching other people play than I do myself. Friends and family who don't understand think I'm insane. Bad enough wasting time on games, but watching others play games? Anyways, thanks for the behind the scenes look at GSL. Awesome work! I wish there was more out there like it.
