As a tribute and a way of saying "welcome back" here goes a small insight into the player:
Source: Team Liquid -> In 10-2009, Ret was invited to try out in the eSTRO team, following in the footsteps of IdrA (CJ Entus) and NonY (eSTRO). Since moving to Korea, Ret joined team eSTRO and has participated in three Courage tournaments to this date. In his first attempt at Courage, Ret started off with a first round bye. In round 2, Ret faced a Terran who was a Woongjin Stars practice partner. Ret played a hard series, but eventually lost 2-1 and was knocked out by the eventual winner of that Courage. A month later, Ret took another shot at Courage, this time facing a Zerg in the first round. Ret played well in his weakest match up, but was eventually defeated by a score of 2-1 and was knocked out in the first round. The player who defeated Ret was defeated in the second round of the tournament. Ret's third and final attempt at winning Courage met greater fortune than his previous attempts. He made it to the Ro8 before being eliminated. All of his opponents were Zerg, largely to be considered his weakest matchup. However, Ret was not eliminated before himself eliminating a previous Courage finalist.
Ret in Korea - Day 1 (New Starcraft pro gamer in South Korea)
(video provided by SCForAll)
I picked up one of his very recent matches agaisnt aTnSocke for us all to check his playstyle and mindset, also added a brief insight on his career wich is taken further with this thread:
aTnSocke (P) VS ret (Z) Part 1
aTnSocke (P) VS ret (Z) Part 2
aTnSocke (P) VS ret (Z) Part 3
In his interview about going to Korea, he replied, asked what excited him most about his new life :
"I can’t wait to beat IdrA in every foreign tournament he ever participates in once I will be able to practice as much as he has"
Source: www.fragster.de / author: Jan 'skY' Leverenz -> Q: Some people talk about a kind of "slavery". What do you think about that? A: I think the comparison is reasonable. You can call it modern day slavery. B-teamers (on eSTRO at least) sit there day in day out without receiving any pay, and they are just told what to do by their coach. For example, they can't even take time to MSN to friends daily or watch anything on their computer not SC-related. They have no power other than to quit SC or the team.
Now hes back for another try at the pro-scene environment, this time backed up by his Team Liquid pairs...good luck!
Source: Team Liquid -> "I will be practicing a lot from home at first and try to represent Liquid in European based tournaments and stuff like HDH etc. After I finish up my driving license (something I've already invested a lot of money into - it's expensive), I will join the Liquid guys in Korea and participate in the GSLs. I am looking forward to getting a second chance in Korea in a much better setting than last time and will definitely be practicing really hard to make the most out of it. I feel like my last Korea experience wasn't very successful and I have to set some things straight over there"
"I figure the Swarm needs another hero to stand up to the evil Terrans, and take some weight off Idra's shoulders . But nah, I've just always been Zerg and I see no reason to switch it up, I love the way Zerg plays in SC2, it doesn’t feel much different from SC1."
Thank you to Team Liquid Liquipedia, SCForAll youtube channel and www.fragster.de / author: Jan 'skY' Leverenz for the intel and thank you to ret for being an awesome sport and a relevant part of the Swarm!
I see most of you never heard the expression "the king is dead...long live the king!".
Guess im gonna have to get "back to basics" and go for some "ret is in SC2" and then i'll get the "duh! we all knew it already we read the news retard"
holy shit he lost weight. don't change the thread title! it's perfect in more ways than one...he really looks like he went through a "rebirth." gogo ret.

Yeah i noticed that after i uploaded it, its clearly a lapse but i blame Kim Yong il for it sorry
In the Ret vs Idra battles I always rooted for Idra, but I'm glad to see that he came back and is trying. I wonder why it took him so long to get SC2 and go "pro". Was he not invited to the beta? It's hard to believe he wasn't, I'm sure he had some friends with beta invites.
Also I think it must be said, ret was a rather typical chunky gamer (although a good deal better than most people) but now...god damn! did you go away to some Buddhist training camp? you look lean n mean n ready for sc2.

Team Liquid Fighting!
From what he said in the TL interview / a twitter from just after he got back from Korea he just got active since returning from estro, gym / tennis and I presume he fixed some messed up eating habits he had. Either way hes looking much better for it.

i Believe the guy who said that is the OP Also OP you also might want to add that In the TSL, right after his last courage, he fought nothing but zergs and lost to Sen His like 8 Most impotent matches in his life were his worst match-ups lol, And his last T.T...until his sc2 return of coarse!

Well I look dumb . I stand corrected. I guess i missed that since i was just starting broodwar at the time. You should still list his TSL shit since it was his last real matches
man, when I read the title I was really shocked at first.. then I wondered how exactly he died when he was at Take's house at the moment while I was watching the live stream
If possible change it to "ret (BroodWar) into Liquid.ret (SC2)", orelse soon im gonna have the french here also saying RIP and that i killed the guy...lol seriously people dont even read the article

I'm amazed by his looks. Props for that Jos. I have huge respect for what you did there. Most amazing job I've seen someone pull off. You earned my respect .
Original title was "ret is dead...long live Liquid.ret !"...but i guess people couldnt read it till the end and actually take a look at the article so it got reverted into something "simpler to process"
Can someone explain what ret means by his driving license? Is he talking about the ability to drive a car...and that takes a lot of time to acquire or something? I'm confused :|
Also, welcome back ret - always good to see one of the top, most skilled foreigners back and ready to play.

In the Netherlands, your drivers license (yes, for a car) takes a lot of money to get. Typically around 25 lessons and then an exam, and even then a lot of people dont pass it the first time. 3000 dollars is about average I think.

Ret was the important part in our community, and I am sorry to see that ret have died I mean, I know we have a lot of good people involved in this community and all of them are human - news of TLO catching chickenpox was humble reminder of all of us are vulnerable to that damnable scythe of grim reaper. But so fast- so fast... We will never know how ret will fare in current new world of Startcraft 2. He may have failed, he may have become a bonjwa. But with this egregious death the tale of ret will only be whispered in hypotheticals, never to be known in our community. Yes, so many future possibility was lost, but we as a group should always remember ret's accomplishments in Starcraft, how he bravely ventured forth to Korea in his display of ability to make decisive decisions, how he fought against his opponents and excited us all.

I saw this topic b4 hitting the road from take's place back to nld, and with rotterdam's driving skills it all became kind of freaky tbh... but I survived!
p.s Rotterdam is a fine driver, but it was dark and we were insanely tired so yeah.. lol :D

Honored to actually see you posting on this thread ret and the intention was always to welcome you into SC2. Fell free to correct any information i might had wrong.
Thank you for standing ground with the Zerg Swarm and best of luck on your future tournaments and personal life
