I love the idea of an invite-only forum as actually it would be specially helpful to those who would only read. Most top players already discuss privately anyway. Would just get some wannabe's butthurt for not being invited but that's a fair cost IMO.

I like QXC's suggestion: I would love to be able to read invite-only topics! Discussions between the best players! =)
Second favorite strategy game of all time: Starcraft. First: Go (aka Wei Qi, Paduk, or Igo)

I don't see why there can't be an invite only forum. There are sections of this forum, like the news, that regular posters can't post in (obviously).

An invite only forum, or AT LEAST a few threads would be good. I don't think a, "lols ok, only we diamond players get to talk in THIS forum suckers!" idea is good, but a few threads, like TvZ balance, etc. will do us good.

I think the less people invited, the better. That cuts down on any jealousy factor, the same as people don't read an interview with TLO and think, "hey, how come I don't get to interview him??"

Anyways, it's not like lower league people will be stopped from posting. They can make the exact same topic, hell, even quote the other thread word for word if they wanted to.

couldnt agree more with OP, Im ~900 diamond myself and I am still completly lost in certain matchups on specifc maps (wont bother going into which), I play against crazy all-in garbage players all the time.
the real test of skills is tournaments, ladder at this point is meaningless as rating can be obtained soley by massing games and not sucking completly.

seems you get more pts every time you win than when you lose also, which really bothers. This means grinders will be rewarded simply for grinding out games rather than winning them...
I'd love it if ladder was simple where you had all diamond players in one big division and ranked them from 1-1000 or whatever, made win/loss hurt/gain you just as much, then maybe ladder would actually mean a thing..right now I grind ladder mostly to play against better players, the higher I get the more likely I am to run into a good player.

Also getting good players do contribute in forums such as these have always been a problem, lowers contradicting and throwing out crazy arguments etc doesnt help.. I dont think there is a sollution.. just deal with it.

The point of not listing your ranking at the beginning of a post is a good one.

The relation to brood war letters is not so good. If the ranking system is norm-referenced to other players (it is) then it doesnt really make sense to say someone is not good at starcraft 2 because they were not an A player in starcraft 1. We are only good or not in relation to one another. If everyone minus 50 people at "B" rank can only play at what you consider a "C" level of mastery in starcraft 2, then your analogy is immediately wrong. Those letter ranks were based on a distribution of skill level relative to other people. People who practiced starcraft 1 for thousands of hours are not necessarily going to start out at the same level in starcraft 2, and the game should not be immediately held to the same standard of macro/build order mastery/micro mastery.

Sorry but I find that part of the OP annoying.

The top of the top in sc2 do not understand their game as well as the top of the top in sc1.

I completely agree that by professional standards that most Diamond players are not that great. I'm a mid level diamond player and I find my self to be slightly above average, but no where close to professional. I was watching replays from the IEM very recently, the amount of control and forethought into the strategies these players are executing is borderline mind boggling. I almost got sick when I was using the player camera perspective tool during Idra's and Tarson's match ups. I will never reach that level, nor do I strive to, I play Starcraft because it's fun and that is it.

The problem with any form of discussion is our American culture that makes us total and complete narcissists. Everyone is right, the person arguing against you is always wrong, and most people are too stubborn to accept when some one else has a better point of view. Of course a professional Starcraft player will most likely have more vital information in regards to any aspect of the game. But someone will always argue otherwise, even if everyone on earth thinks they're wrong. The best thing to do is just try and be as objective about your knowledge as possible, and accept that other people may have enlightening information, though for most people on the upper echelon that may rarely be the case.

I think you guys and iEchoic are missing each others points. Obviously he's wrong, but he doesn't know why so I'll try to help here a bit:

Is it true that SC1 is built on very simple foundations (the gathering of 2 resources, 3 unique races with a theme to them each, "pixelated" yet clean graphics, a few simple spells added in the mix, etc.)?

Yes.

Does this make it a "simple" compared to other RTS games which have a lot of arbitrary mechanics? (For example: A unit decisively counters B, which counters C, which counters the mega powerful unit D, but that's used to counter other things)?

Yes.

Does all this make SC1 a simple game? Hell no.

I suspect that iEchoic was trolling, but this is just arguing semantics. Conceptually, go is a very "simple" game with just one type of stone for each player, but its strategic complexity surpasses that of chess.

Also, I think that what Saracen said about there being no substitute or experience should be added to the OP, or perhaps be in a new thread. The point made is too important for people to have to wade through 10 pages to get to it.

I really, really like qxc's idea of an invite only forum. The current forum 'climate' seems to discourage good players from posting, or even reading.

I personally would love to read the posts in an invite-only forum.

I'm a D grade ICCUP T turned Bronze League Z and I think an invite only strategy thread/mini-forum would be a good idea.

True enough and reason for there to be an invite only section of TL. That way theorycrafting comes from those who know the game, not just anybody who can say diamond.

mmm, if anything i feel that your SC1/SC2 point comparison is too lenient. but i'm sure you've received numerous posts regarding that.

publicity = good
mass blindly posted strategy pages = bad

Invite-only forums would actually be a good idea, as long as it's limited to like a section or something as opposed to all over the place. I'm sure you could come up with something like "Theory crafting among the gosu" or something nerdy like that

Leave it open for reading (that's how I gained my sc1 knowledge, little as it might be). Anyone who gets butthurt over not being invited should go make a name for themselves or figure out that they're just not that great. Seems like we have a lot of pride mentality, but that's just the internet it seems. Missing the older quality posts: mahnini verbalizes the state of sc2 strategy discussion quite well in his post.

remember when those came out and we had nice discussion about why/how they worked and community members wrote article quality analyses about them? we had people from other races endure weeks of ladder without clearly defined counters to such builds yet not once was there a complaint about imbalance. can we go back to that time? a time when it was considered a challenge to overcome a new build and the unveiling of the counter sent shockwaves thorough the community?

let's quit being bitches and start being teamliquid shall we?

I'm in platinum and have no build-order beyond 14 spawning pool, lol. Still, this thread is obvious but we need it anyways. I do disagree that it's not like everyone is doing 4 gate all-ins and VR rushes (for protoss). I think there are legitimate strategies that are very popular, in fact, I don't think anything in this game is considered illegitimate so far. And by illegitimate i mean some tactic/strategy that is just imbalanced. Like, stacking mutas was horribly imbalanced. But then we all just dealt with it and well as new people entered the fray you just excepted that. These imbalances (Someone else's thread and term, i forgot who, sorry) make the game. So can we ALL PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP AND PLAY THE GAME. Sorry, I check these forums almost everyday, and the only threads I like are "funniest opponent's quote" or "easter eggs in single player." The only person I know who consistently gives me good strategy and intel is Day9. I really hope for the best of this community. But there are so many players who just don't have the right to speak. But whatever, this is America and since I'm talking, everyone else is. Which is why there are 28 pages of this thread so far, and I haven't read anything past the initial post.
Cold wind, chilling.

Diamond league is for good/great players to feel good about. It's nothing for dedicated/pro players...

But seriously everyone who says diamond league is just a joke, well it might be if you're pro or just dedicated and play a lot, but to the average joe who plays for fun and just really likes the game, it's still good to be in diamond league...

I very much like the idea of an invite-only forum, as long as the rest of us could read it to learn.

Superb article, and great discussion.

I sadly haven't laddered in a while and feel like I'm even slipping out of the low diamond =\

Regardless, this is the way the elitism issue should have been addressed right from the get-go. Everyone has something to add, and though rank should be considered to gauge comprehension, it is by no means the prerequisite in my book.

I saw that the OP was Saracen, and I knew I was in for some quality insight.
You know when you see a planet and you see that light, that planet isn't even there thats just a light, that's just your neighbor shining a flashlight into your backyard looking for coons.
