This is significant in that he is the first active Korean BW progamer on a current proteam to publicly announce he will switch from BW to SC2. As a consequence, he has left the MBC team (due to the failure to negotiate a new contract based on his poor results).
It is most likely he will attempt to participate in the coming GSL.
Iron's departure from BW will most likely spark a turbulent period in the progaming scene at this current moment. Will the August-September Proleague off-season see even more players that fail to acquire new contracts, leave Brood War in an attempt to pursue new careers in SC2?
EDIT: Adding to this speculation, only a record-low number of players were drafted in the Rookie Draft this past Monday, only 18, a stark contrast to the 30's and 40's of past drafts.
Wasn't this the guy that danced to Mister in the hyungjoon show? Sad that he left MBC... even if he hasn't done much for the team. Doesn't seem like any of the S-class players will be switching to sc2 anytime soon though

I think only reject progamers who will never accomplish anything in BW will switch to sc2. Iron was never gonna win anything, so SC2 is a smart move for him. I wish him the best of luck .
Oh man, IrOn was a cool guy. Always saw him in that clip package where he was sent out for an ACE snipe I believe and did a "thumb across the neck" thing, which IRC he lost. Atleast he can say he beat EffOrt. Too bad he couldn't be on a team and be playing sc2.

and rapped Outsider quite well.
For anyone who still doesn't know who they are talking about, he was aka Flounder in the show.
I think it is interesting to see which pros switch over faster in the hopes that SC2 catches on. I doubt we will see many mainstream players switch until they are sure that SC2 is going to take off though.
good to see people with no chance in BW attempting something where they have at least some chance to succeed
a-teamers wont switch unless theres a clear financial incentive to do so and GSL doesn't cut it because its a 1 trick pony tournament that doesnt offer real career incentives. its awesome but theres no point for seriously competitive a-teamers to bother with sc2 until its a viable career switch
You will definitely see more BW players switching over to SC2, B-teamers for example. Or anyne who just sits on the bench and doesn't get to play broadcasted games I guess. SC2 will be the right move for them as they won't achieve much for themselves or their team at this point. Mind as well start a fresh endeavour, at least they'll stand a chance.
I hope I will get to see some Pro SC:BW and some Pro SC2... just hope I'll get right in that transitional period.
If I had to chose, I'd rather see more Pro BW. I've seen it before and want to see it live again... I'll have plenty of time to see more SC2 given what we have seen so far in Europe.
Will be really interesting to see how the transition goes...

He shouldn't, why would he? He was wrongfully accused. I believe his reputation was destroyed through the rumours that he was involved though, but he's not a disgraced BW gamer.
Most of the lower-echelon "pros" will be doing similar moves in the near future. Those who can't negotiate terms due to either sucking, wanting too much, etc. will all likely transition to SC2. They've sacrificed their lives, education, social life, etc. to become progamers so they have no other real option then to turn to SC2 at this point.

Well, yeah. If the BW scene was in a terminal crisis, then the correct way to call that would be a terminal crisis. As it is, this is only the beginning of something bigger- which may or may not end up happening.

GSL banned all of the "disgraced" BW gamers, so I don't think he will be playing.
Do you have a source for this? I was look forward to seeing more from him after the artosis video.
In the GSL rules there was something about GSL being able to deny players from participating if they were unfit. I believe in a later interview with the GSL they clarified this to mean that match-fixers would not be given the opportunity to participate in the GSL.

Oh Flounder! I had no idea for a moment there but I was thinking "hmmm I know that face..." his "Mister" dancing was hilarious.
Interesting to see him move across, however I do agree with some of the others - you'd think he would have a better chance in SC2 than SC1!
I will enjoy seeing the dance master flounder playing.
I agree with some of the other people in this thread, quite a few B-teamers and other lower level progamers will probably switch over to SC2. But I don't see them being super dominating in the scene.
But if a A level progamer switches over, that could be a different story (but the chance of that is so little as of now)

which means that only the best of the best would be playing BW while the others run away to SC2,right now this is good but in the long run I fear that BW would die.
Seems insignificant at the moment but in the long term it's bad for BW....there's a lot more possibilities in SC2 right now for B-teamers and below. If all the B-teamers/practice partners switch to SC2 what will the A-teamers do? Only practice against themselves? Same 30-50 players competing every match and tourney? With no new players coming in and lesser players switching the prospects for BW don't look good. If the GSL is a success I don't see how the pro BW scene can continue to sustain itself.
I read the comments below the article. I don't know who Iron is but seems he's known as "Suicide Toss". lol
Anyway, his bad performance and the prize money lured him to SC2 it seems. It's better to be salaried in the long run, but I can see how this can be tempting for someone in his situation.

I really hope this isn't the case. Despite the match-fixing, I'd like to see upmagic and savior back in the booth.

For the players whose contracts are running out this end of August and did not extend their contract, at least they have Starcraft 2.
One of the progame teams has been revealed to have their players whose contracts are ending practice Starcraft 2. Meanwhile, another progame team seems to have purchased state of the art computers so that their players could experience Starcraft 2. And in another progame team, the players have been practicing SC2 on their free time.
Especially, a specific progamer, a Starleague winner, has been revealed to join the Starcraft 2 Clan Prime to enter Starcraft 2 once his contract with his current team ended. Meanwhile, an upper-middle class progamer even demanded compensation for joining a Starcraft 2 league.
Regarding July, Prime's coach Lee Joon Ho has said this. "He is active in the clan, but he's not in our game team [T/N: Prime recently turned into a team]. In the case of July, he is good not just as a gamer but also as a commentator, so I think he has the potential to show the e-Sports industry a lot more. But I'm sure he has something planned. If he folds everything and comes in, then we will accept him, but as of right now, July is not part of the Prime game team."
Starcraft 2 also finally broke gametrics top 10 chart for yesterday. Sadly, WoW resurfaced and took it off the top 10 chart the day after.
The way it's being portrayed is that a lot of the unsuccessful players are switching over to sc2 for a "second chance"... It may cast sc2 in a bad light perhaps?
IrOn isn't just some random B-teamer. He went 10-3 in the Dream League, if he wanted to make it in BW he might have succeeded eventually. Even if MBC kicked him out he could have gone to another team, like Hite. Point is, this is more likely to be a conscious decision on his part than a necessity.

What?
Yeah seriously. Aside from the rumours/inside news in the post over my head, a guy switching to sc2 because he sucked balls at bw and couldn't renew his contract, is not a serious sign of anything. Contrary to what many posts including the OP are calling "significant". Is it as significant as sangho switching over, or intotherainbow? I doubt it. The impression that some "ex-progamers" are switching to sc2 because sc1 required too much skill/commitment, must already have been made on koreans, and i doubt this + Show Spoiler +

so IdrA was a pioneer. first b-teamer to make the transition from bw to sc2... i can see him in a few years (when koreans dominate sc2) being a leyend like Grrrr or ElkY, and having a really promising poker carreer...

Um, isn't it true that even the worst Korean pro gamers annihilate the vast majority of foreign players in BW? Though I find this news less exciting than the Nada vs TLO showmatch (and its consequence drama,) to call this event trivial is pretty near-sighted.
At the very least, it shows that Korean pros can and will switch over given the right circumstances.
Well whatever. I wish we'd actually get some quality progamers in starcraft 2 as well. Right now it just seems to have become a haven for subpar progamers who either a) Sucked too much to be given a chance play broadcasted Sc1 games (JulyZerg) b) Had a mediocre brood war career so they switched over to make a name for themselves (theSTC, Tester, and now Iron).
With no offense to the man, I don't really see this as too significant. He switched to SC2 because his BW career more or less tanked. I remember he was pretty far down in the in house rankings

Sorry to bump this but is there anyone to find a definitive list of the brood war players that now play sc2?
I know July, Tester, TheSTC, IntotheRainbow, Iron, Cool, Junwi. Any that I am missing?
i don't see any reason for top bw players to switch as they already have a pretty cushy contract but it'd make sense for lower tier players to cross over

Me too, probably won't ever happen for various reasons. Would be nice though to see that like some of what we see in Halo or Street Fighter.

All the S-class players you see today were once B-team years ago you should be WAY more concerned in the fact that the new players are not going to BW this is REALLY a bad omen for BW

rooting for iron i feel like he has a greater motivation than anybody else if he was telling the truth in that one interview

I dunno, if there is something as big as GSL always going on it is a fairly viable career switch. If you just make the RO16 each month thats over $20k a year in earnings. If you are a player like flash or jaedong and can consistently make the top 10 in tournaments, then it would be pretty good actually. Just winning one monthly tournament would be close to what he makes in a year right now. Then there is the possibility of winning a million bucks at the end of next year.
I think that if anything its not a viable career switch for b team people that might not always make it to the RO16.

At least some chance to succeed eh?
Interesting that the first to switch has become the protoss champion.
What's also interesting to me--looking at his BW career, he only has one career televised win--but it was vs Effort, who has ALMOST a 70% ZvP winrate all-time.
