Idra said both nada and july played outdated strategies that doesn't work, july only won because his strategy was slight less outdated, that is almost an exact quote and is hardly constructive just talking down his achievement. Incontrol agreed and then said july has been a disappointment in sc2, i'd say reaching this far into GSL is a great achievement but when listening to sotg it sounds as if he got there by just beating a bunch of bad players.

The vibe I got was that July is playing an unsustainable strategy that is a derivative of his Brood War style. It is relatively unique, and even Artosis said that during, I think maybe the match before the semi's practicing against July isn't that helpful because it is only going to help you against July and not the general Zerg population. July runs on a low economy that makes Hive Tech really not all the plausible in most situations, especially considering his aggressive style.
Since more players in the GSL probably don't face too many Zerg players that use July's strategy him winning isn't only a testament to his skill, but also to the inexperience of his competition. I think there is a lot of room for improvement in July's play but the flaws tend to be masked by the unique nature of his play and the positive results thus far.
I don't think he can continue to play in the manner he has been (not the aggressive part so much a low economy) and expect to win as players observe his strategies more. I think this was the general sentiment of the SOTG crew who could see the flaws in both July's play and in the responses made by his opponents.

I dont get why all the hate on Nony? I mean yes he doesnt play as much as some, and yes he admits to not practicing as much as he should. At least he is up front with it, unliek some other players I know who just comes up with excuses and bullshit all the time.
Non KR players should learn from korean players in that matter, accept your fucking weaknesses and deal with them.
Anyway, just because he doesnt play as much as some doesnt mean he is neccisarly worse, I rank Nony above both HuK and Haypro atm(sorry, I still love both of you!).

a) quoting Idra doesn't count because he doesn't give a fuck b) how is one of the top zergs saying he doesn't believe July's style has much longevity not constructive? He explained what he did, why Nada lost to it and what he should have done, and how it pertains to the match up. Sounds pretty fucking constructive to me. c) he also said what July did was really cool d) they didn't exactly say July is a disappointment, they said that for the guy who was the God of War in BW, a Golden Mouse winner, some of the mistakes he makes (e.g. making a third macro hatch instead of just taking a third base) are surprising. They also said MC is the heavy favourite to win the tournament, which is undeniable.

Idra's always good for laughs. I have nothing against him, but I can't help to laugh. This isn't verbatim, but he said something along these lines in last week's cast..."I misplaced a zergling and lost. Excuses, and then more excuses. Then I let him scout me while I was going to all-in and lost. So I think, to me at least, that series shows I'm clearly better than Squirtle." Keep in mind that's the guy he just lost to.

^i agree with idra, he outstrategised and just made a few silly mistakes.
IdrA is a smart guy, he thinks a lot of himself and rightfully so.

Yeah that comment reminded me of the fallout from his showmatch with F91 a few years ago.

This is pretty much it IMO. MKP pretty much did something similar with his marine antics. They basically showcased an unknown strategy, and logically enough, people couldn't respond correctly. A new strategy, regardless of whether its "good" or not, has a ton of shock value almost always, and that's how people like July/Kyrix/MKP have gotten as far as they did.
But, look what's happened to Kyrix, and to a lesser extent MKP. Their builds lose their shock value, and all of a sudden, they're borderline worthless. I think the same thing will happen to July. Maybe not next season (look how long MKP was successful), but it will happen. I also think that we will see several similar stories throughout this year, at least. It's all a side effect of the game being new, which leaves a ton of room for these new strategies to pop up and ride their shock value to a Ro4 or a finals. I think if anyone ever starts using the Infestor/Ling strategy MrBitter posted, for example, they will ride that build to a high finish.
|
I'm not really convinced that MKP's success is over. His loss in this GSL puts him in a club with MVP and NesTea, and I have a hard time believing anyone out there is saying "Yeah, we've seen the last of those guys." MKP was in the finals as recently as LAST GSL.
