As artosis had put it after the game, he was quite happy at what Genius was trying to do - I dont know what he meant by that to be honest. I thought it was just ridiculous, to my limited knowledge carriers had never been able to win any GSL game. What Genius had done was to autolose. Genius has won several games with carriers in GSL. Think there even was one last season.

Late game carrier transition is very viable v. Zerg. That being said I think HongUn.Prime is also pretty known for carrier play in the GSL. I only mention him because other than Genius HongUn might be the only player to have secured a win by starting with a carrier build. <3 genius for trying it though, it is bullshit that they are taking it out in HotS

I don't recall any wins with Carriers in GSL history. Care to give the specific match? Anyway, for that game, as far I could tell, Genius was just going "Hey, Phoenix deny scouting and it's easy to turtle on three bases here so I hope I can get enough Carriers to go kill him before he finds out what's going on!!" Turns out that didn't happen. DRG knew he was doing something weird (large investment into StarGate [likely saw +1 as well if he clicked on the units] without doing much) and having to rely on staying hidden in his base with cannons and Sentries - what's good against that? Oh, drops. Bam, dead. I mean, it's not a stupid cheese (and yes, despite being on three bases, it's cheese: it relies entirely on your opponent not scouting/guessing what you're doing and if they do you auto-lose thanks to easy hard counters) but it's not overly amazing either.

Care to give the specific match? there is a pvt where carriers were used to win, maybe open gsl season 3 or something there may be more recent games, more applicable games, but you said 'any in gsl history', and I know for a fact there is that one.

It might lead an uninformed reader to think that the set of all viable strategies at the top of the European ladder is identical to the set of all viable strategies in GSL Code S, which is such a ridiculous idea that I know it's surely not what you meant.

Hm. Don't recall that game, but then there have been thousands. I'd still like to know any recent and relevant ones so I could look into them. I really think Carriers are such an investment and so easily hard countered that they're a pointless unit as of now. Maybe with changes they could be good, but sadly Blizzard looks to remove them rather than improve them.

Last season's code A, Genius vs Symbol on Calm Before the Storm http://www.gomtv.net/2011gslsponsors7/vod/66530 Very similar build to the one used against DRG. Bit of an odd game though.
