maybe i missed it but did they just skip the part on how disappointing chinese players were after tyler's joke? i would've been interested in what they thought on reasons why china is so far behind. just lack of interest?

Great Firewall of China. They're insulated from the outside and because of it, miss out on a lot of changing strategies. KR/EU/NA all play together relatively often at this point in the various tournaments and it allows for a lot of strategies to exchange hands. The chinese simply don't, and it means they're stuck playing a different version of the game (essentially).

Actually, most top chinese players play on the KR ladder regularly, so that shouldn't be an excuse at all.

i thought the govt firewall would not allow this...proof? i think only a few get around it (macsed does play on kr - gave his acct to sase but i dont know any other notable chinese player who does)

Jinro wrote in the IEM LR thread that Jim practices on KR and he thought he was usually really good. Xigua played in the FXO Korean KOTH, there are various casted games of Chinese players against Koreans I watched in the past that are probably ladder games - I think they have the ability to play opponents outside of China.

If streaming SOTG doesn't benefit them then I guess buying it (or whatever they did) was a pretty bad choice ^^.

I think people complaining about the vod or mp3 not getting uploaded as fast as possible can also be taken as a compliment for the show.

Of course it is. It also shows how much we care for the show because delaying the MP3/VOD severely hurts the audience numbers. Basically we're doing what every responsible fan should be doing. ^^

Sure, lots of things changed after poker came on TV. It didn't just become more popular. We talked about it. Some people are wary of going on TV because, even if SC2 does become more popular, there may also be bad effects, like the average fan becoming less knowledgeable or the average person respecting us less.

I think you may have misplaced the word "only" and it makes a huge difference. So assuming you were trying to say that we said that poker being televised was the only necessary condition for its popularity, then I think you misunderstood us. We expressed that poker being televised played a key role for its boom. The way the presentation of the game was directed was new. Cameras were placed to detect the contents of hidden cards so the viewer had all the information. Chance to win the hand displayed as a simple percentage immediately gave the audience information that previously took specialized knowledge and practice to calculate on the fly. And the basic rules of the game were explained multiple times a broadcast.

Another key factor was poker's emergence in the online gaming world. Played physically, poker is considered too inconvenient and slow by many. Online poker made the game significantly easier to play than ever before. These two key factors fed off each other, as budding poker players wanted to watch the pros and spectators wanted to give the game a try. Of course, SC2 already has this so it was not worth mentioning. Though it's fair to concede that online poker was more convenient since its software was free and had low system requirements.

I believe you understand the similarities and differences between multiple necessary conditions and a single necessary condition. And I'm sure you understand that in complicated real world scenarios, it's often impossible to prove that any part was necessary. The imagination can usually convince us that it could have happened in an entirely different way. So identifying a necessary condition is very difficult. The best we can usually do is look at the situation and reason about which factors, when removed, would have made that specific situation fail. I think it's safe to say that poker's new style of televised content was one such factor for its boom. We didn't mean to make any more ambitious claim than that. But it very well could be that that was the only way it could have happened at that time. So it's similarly ambitious to deny that going on TV wasn't the only necessary condition. It's best to leave such claims alone as we shouldn't pretend or aspire to have such certainty.

This adds a lot of important facts to the poker boom that wasn't mentioned before. However let me also just add that there were many (more) factors to the poker boom, and it was actually an explosion that built up over several years. I would say that the the poker boom actually started to take shape in the end of the 90s, with online poker and the movie Rounders (1998). This movie was a big recruitment tool for poker in the young male demographic, cause it unlike previous 'poker movies' really captured a big part of the intrigue of the life and mindset of a poker player (at that time). Fast forward several years and Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker. Although it was an important factor of the poker boom, it probably gets too much credit, while others are undeservedly rarely mentioned.

I can assure people that 'the poker boom' and 'the Sc2 boom' are very different situations, and getting Sc2 on TV is in no way a guaranteed path to the mainstream, or even to give a significant boost to the current growth. In the end it will all be down to execution, both in terms of production choices and how willing the TV channel is willing to be flexible to make it work. I'm more than a little skeptical of the potential Sc2 and TV relationship, but I'll try to remain optimistic about it. I believe in the intelligence of many of the movers and shakers of this community, and the experience some of them have gained through the years of trial and error e-sports have gone through.

I guess this mp3/vod thing is real rocket science a la NASA, however have media been able to keep a schedule all these years.

Make MLG look pro, keep your show follow simple time schedules. This "uploaded when X wakes up" is just not very impressive. If you choose to have the show at night, make it work for the customers.

One more game manages to have vods for every show 30 seconds after the live show, they use the tech available. MLG does not, they rather have pissed of people.

I would instantly donate ~5 euros for SotG for guarantee that the mp3 is up within 2 hours of the show. That way I could download it to my iPad every wednesday morning before leaving for work/school. Though I don't think its the lack of resources that is causing delays atm.

P.S. We bitch, because we care about the show.

I think JP adds subtitles/lector to the mp3 and VOD since WhiteRa was on the show, thats why it take that long.
