Ok so there was a thread about Single Player or Multi First and I was suprised about how many people on TL are really looking forward to Single Player. I am just wondering what people think on a few questions about Single Player.
When will you play SP? Will you play SP?
Poll: After install I willPlay SP player frst and go back and forth between SP and MP (432) 45% Play all the way through SP before playing MP (279) 29% Play MP first but go back and forth between MP and SP (109) 11% Play MP first and for awhile but will eventually play SP (81) 8% Play only MP and will not play SP ever (53) 6% 954 total votes Your vote: After install I will (Vote): Play only MP and will not play SP ever (Vote): Play MP first and for awhile but will eventually play SP (Vote): Play MP first but go back and forth between MP and SP (Vote): Play SP player frst and go back and forth between SP and MP (Vote): Play all the way through SP before playing MP
I am almost postive there are 5 levels for the campaign, I think these are the names in order: Very Easy, Casual, Normal, Brutal, Insane. What level will you play?
Poll: What Level will you play SPNormal (328) 46% Brutal (181) 25% Insane (173) 24% I dont plan on playing SP (19) 3% Very Easy (8) 1% Casual (8) 1% 717 total votes Your vote: What Level will you play SP (Vote): I dont plan on playing SP (Vote): Very Easy (Vote): Casual (Vote): Normal (Vote): Brutal (Vote): Insane
What campaign are you looking forward to most?

If anyone else has polls regarding SP they want to see I will add them

i dont know why people would wanna play on insane since i really dont think playing campaign on insane will help you with your multiplayer game. so i would just play on normal.
I always find the zerg story is a little more interesting since its so dark and mysterious. maybe im bias. terran story is usually more dirty and greedy. protoss story is more courage and honor type stuff. Well thats what i encountered playing SCBW anyways.
Believe it or not, my main focus on this game and hype is the singleplayer. I really want to see if Blizzard can deliver an experience that can be set aside some of the best SP games. They said this is the first time they've really focused on SP as a stand-alone product. With WC3 and SC, they said, they were only aiming to really train the player for multiplayer. This is not the case with Starcraft 2 apparently.
I'm really hoping there will be a great story with twists and turns and a ton of variety in the missions.
MP is what will keep me coming back though. But I think the SP will have the largest lasting impression on me if it is done correctly.

Its for the Challenge i always play on the hardest difficulty just for the little joy it gives you at the end after pulling your hair out for hours on end
about the campain part, im not looking forward to anyone particular, but i realy REALY hope they make awesome cliffhangers between them so you just cant w8 to play the next one!
I will probably play through the campaign before multiplayer. Blizzard always does a great job with their story lines, and single player portions of their games, so it would be to a shame to overlook it. I will probably play through on the hardest difficulty available. I suppose, as a T player, I'm looking forward to WoL the most.

EDIT: Sorry, my bad.
I'd pick Insane, just for fun and of course, the challenge :D Or maybe Brutal so I can get bonus material (will probably be a lot of it) easier and at the same time not ruin the fun.
Insane > Brutal if you read the whole post you would see it is in there
gotta play through at least once for the storyline, even though sc's storyline is weak compared to alot of newer games
Where is the classic option of "I'll cheat first" lol.
That said I don't plan to cheat and I'll probably play on normal planning and switching back and forth. I think I understand how to play RTS games now compared to 10 years ago. Agreed that Zerg campaign always seems most interesting, Kerrigan gets some of the best lines in the entire game really.
I wouldn't even touch multiplayer until I beat the campaign if I didn't want to get into contact with some friends from WC3.
It would take a realllly cool and hard to get portrait to get me to play campaign first.
I have a high view of TL and think most posters are above cheating

Weak? Are you kidding me?

Examples?

Well I'll personally be playing a lot of campaign when the game launches - obviously I will want to keep my MP skills competent, but after so many months of Beta, SP is really what I want to see. Sure the MP component is fun and all, but the SP is really what I've personally been looking forward to with the launch of SC2. Don't get me wrong, I'm a high plat/low diamond player I take the MP fairly seriously, but since I've had beta MP is more like something that is there and is fun (and will be the primary source of my SC2 playtime), but SP is the content I really want to see.
Weak storyline? Check out Modern Warfare 2 - that's a weak storyline. Government agents go on mission, psychopath tries to take of the world, government agents get framed and try to stop them. If that isn't the most boring re-hashed storyline ever I don't know what is. SC on the other hand? Far from it.

I'm most looking forward to the Protoss one because then the whole game will out (Yay!!) be with all the probable MP changes (units, mechanics, whatever) and the MP's real development cycle for the playerbase will begin.
Single player first for sure. There's like 30 levels so I dunno if I would finish it in one go before playing multiplayer.
Are the expansion names finalized already?
I chose insane. I guess that even Insane level for Broodwar nerd will be too easy.
I fear the servers may be a bit funky the first days after release so I guess Im going for SP first, waiting for the crazyness of the first days to stop then go to MP and SP if i am tired of it or because the SP might be really good and I wanna finish it.
Ill take a look at insane, if I find it a bit stupid and it requires to abuses I ll lower the difficulty. But I like a challenge to help increase my speed and precision.
Best to play Normal first, then go for a higher/highest difficulty.
On July 02 2010 02:13 wolfe wrote: Are the expansion names finalized already? Long time ago.

Anyone got a FAQ/link about the difficulty levels? I have never heard of them before.
I figure I'll get around to the SP campaign eventually, i do want to know the story, but overall I'm 99% concerned with the MP side.
Campaign first ! I am really curious about the sp. Probably finish it before playing mp depends on how long it takes me.
Although I am really looking forward to the WoL campaign and being a protoss player to LotV, I really want to see how will they make HotS's interface and how will they represent the whole zerg feel.
campaign is not maga important if you know how to work a RTS

On July 02 2010 01:48 faction123 wrote: gotta play through at least once for the storyline, even though sc's storyline is weak compared to alot of newer games
What the fuck?
Starcraft has an awesome story line, how dare you trashtalk like that Even though the SC1 campaign wasn't that fun to play through the actual storyline was awesome.
I'll probably go through SP one time on a moderately challenging difficulty, pulling some all-nighters. Then I'll redo it on the highest difficulty and go back and forth between SP and MP
with multiplayer I'm more of a 2v2 guy so I'll probly be focused on singleplayer except for when one of my friends is on. Protoss player so I'm looking forward to their campaign most, but also because it's the last one it will probably have a sweet ending. Difficulty I'll go with normal first because I'de rather experiance the story without excessive difficulty the first time, ill probably go through a second time at some point on the hardest difficulty for a real challenge.
I like multiplayer games a lot, but I love single player campaigns, simply because of the stories and all of the really unique and interesting situations that the developers can put you in, so I will probably play most of the campaign first and then dabble in the multiplayer.
The single player mode is going to be awesome I'm certain, and I think it will be a breath of fresh air after the Beta marathon that we'll all be undergoing (although is it possible to get bored of a game as dynamic as Starcraft 2 multiplayer?).
Also, as a Mac user, I haven't been able to tool around on the Galaxy Editor yet, so I'm really looking forward to that as well. In all honesty, I will probably mix in a bit of everything that Starcraft 2 has to offer at the beginning, just enjoying what 12 years of patience has brought us. I love Starcraft, and there isn't a single aspect of the second installment that I'm not looking forward too!
On a side note, does anyone know how much time is going to be placed between the release of the different campaign modes? A year? Six months? Also, has anyone heard any rumor on what each installment (HotS and LotV) will cost?
Play single player all the way through then move on to Multi is the way to go in my opinion. Even if there are alot of levels I think its worth the time to play it through and get the single player achievements then work my way through the online Multiplayer ones. Of course working your way to diamond if it still exist at launch lol.
I'll play single player to start. I've always prefered the Zerg, so I will play their campaign first if that option is available. I never seen SP as being a source to improve my game. There are a lot of modified units and scenarios in there that arn't at all comparable to MP. I always pick the hardest difficulty even though it can be frustrating. I always get a nice sense of accomplishment afterwards (nerdalert).

Thats why I said I wasn't sure, but if you looked at peoples profiles during the most recent patches of beta, below thier stats it randomly had completed campaign difficulty then one of these 5 levels and they have stated there will be 5 levels no link though.
Also adding poll to OP now: Will you cheat?
hmm ... no question about the minigames that should prep you for MP, cant wait for those, its something new for rts games.
Going to beat the single player first, then beat it on brutal for the challenge.

I dont know enough about them to make a question about it. Come up with something and I will gladly at it to OP
In games I am really pumped about, I always play one difficulty up from normal. I don't really care about getting a ridiculous challenge out of singleplayer games. In fact, I generally don't ever want to die or lose unless I make a big mistake and really deserve it.
In 90% of games, one step up from Normal gives me that difficulty. Normal tends to be "hard enough that you won't feel like the n00b you are".
Somehow Starcraft loses it's appeal unless I know I'm battling wits against a real human being and not a pre-scripted challenge. It's the same mindset that makes me hate grinding in RPGs.
I just wish it to have like 100 missions in the campaign! :p
The cheating will certainly depend on how difficult the game is. I think people will cheat significantly less than they did in SC1/BW due to a mixture of more experienced players and difficulty levels. SC1's campaign is easy now but back then everyone was a big newb. If you don't wall in your base on the UED mission where you need to capture the Overmind for example the hero Ultralisk Torrasque will screw you over.
Poll: Did you cheat to beat the SC1 Campagin?A lot >_> (15) 34% Never (15) 34% A few times on later missions (8) 18% Only after I beat the game (6) 14% 44 total votes Your vote: Did you cheat to beat the SC1 Campagin? Yeah your right I know I struggled to beat the last few levels in BW but I never cheated, the only game I can remember cheating on was Balduers Gate (Used online guide) that game was the hardest game I have ever played

Yes. Difficulties below normal are for your grandmother; normal is for people with little or no RTS experience. If you know what a control group is, you should be playing on harder than normal, and even Insane is unlikely to seriously challenge anyone who was platinum/diamond in beta.

Obviously you guys haven't read Day[9]'s visit to Blizzard HQ
Quoting from the linked article:
"Day[9] is impressed because he feels like he actually has to really try and focus to beat the mission.
Day[9] eventually loses again, but he thinks that the campaigns are awesome"
-In the original single player, none of the missions were challenging in any regard, but this is very challenging.
Sure it won't be like facing a human opponent but I doubt that it will be a cakewalk.
It wont be like human but the computer can cheat so they could make it so hard it is unbeatable. Day9 said he was playing on insane if I remember correctly. My personal plan is start on brutal and fight my way through
So people are actually going to go on battle.net (or the internet in general) before completing the campaign completely? Enjoy your spoilers.

My personal plan is start on brutal and fight my way through I don't know why it would be better to play against the hardest difficulty first, maybe something harder than normal if normal is too easy. Day9 was probably playing a early to middle mission in the campaign and of course the missions will probably get harder. If you have to do repeat plays because of difficulty than your first play on a hard difficulty is similar to someone else playing on normal to get the hang of it.
Expect the person who played it on normal will have played the campaign twice and seen different aspects of the campaign. Remember the game has branching choices, like save the colonists or not as shown in the campaign demos and you can choose a different technology usage the second time around.
gotta play normal first, if its too easy go to insane :D
For the cheating poll...
I said yes, a lot because i was like 10 when i played....like come on give me a break!
just gonna play single player and just cheat through so i can read the story haha
Well I am super excited for the story. I have mixed feelings about what difficulty level I'll choose. Brutal would be a good good challenge for me... buuut I am probably not good enough to squeeze every juiiiicy lore detail out of the campaign >> Leaning to doing Brutal for the first round.
ugh, I feeling like using black sheep wall shouldn't be considered cheating. I used it on every map in Starcrafts SP >.>
Definitely looking forward to SP. I'll prob play on Insane just to lengthen the experience. If it's at or slightly above the Hard difficulty on WC3 that should be about right.
I hope the Insane difficulty will be hard because it requires constant aggression from the player to the point of irresponsibility. That style of hard is always more fun than the "hold off ridiculous amounts of forces until you gather big enough army to roll computer" style of hard which is more common and easier to create.
My life for Aiur! Oh that isn't what this is about. I'm looking forward to the Protoss one because it's the last piece of the campaign. (and I'm a Protoss player. Oh was that unexpected?) I will play SP first and then switch between 'em
deffinitely smash the single player first, ive played the beta and will be playing more in second phase hopefully so i will have had adequate amount of multiplayer when the game is released, but i'll be transitioning between the two before i finnish the story line, probably start it on normal but if its un-enjoyably easy then i'll bump it up a notch.

I think there's a few reasons for that. For starters, I can't stand to final get to play the game and need to go through 5 "this is how you makes marines with a barracks" style levels before you're even able to start playing decent levels.
I've spent a lot of time in the beta practicing the "real" part of the game, I definetely want to be able to play some 1v1 the second I get SC going.
why is one of the polls missing ;__; I will play sp on insane until i win w/o cheats then mp for the nexts 6 years ^^
I can't wait to see the protoss campaign cause that means the whole game will have been released.
I'll play normal first, so that I can get through the storyline faster Then I'll upgrade to insane just for the challenge (and I am guessing that knowing the map layouts will help tremendously). I agree that insane will not help your multiplayer skills, but for the sheer fun and challenge I will not be able to resist.
Whoever was saying Blizzard storylines are weak is crazy
I always play on the "higher difficulty level" cause if I'm not, I'll just finish the game in 5 hours! It's been like that since im 10 years old and I'm now 28! Too many finished games on my shelf, at least hardest difficulty makes it harder to finish them!
I'm gonna play the campaign through on insane WITH CHEATS FIRST PLAYTHROUGH.
+ Show Spoiler +Thought I'd revoke my statement did you? Well nope, still gonna cheat like a little whore, but I'm also doing it in one sitting!
I think that playing in the hard difficulties makes one more aware of the things one must do, and if one can beat many challenges in hard difficulties then MP can also be tackled similarly and thus be "beaten". Playing on hard in any game makes everything not so hard in the end. Such as playing halo with sensitivity in 10000000000 and in hardest difficulty.
Single player for the win! Blizzard's single player campaigns have always been extremely entertaining and impressive, I can't wait to see how the storyline will unfold.
I always play games on the hardest difficulty Insane it is

24 would be awful for Starcraft
Single player for sure, nothing really gets me as psyched for a game as an epic story, and its hard to argue that starcraft isn't one of the best space epics out there.
I will probably play SP on one of the easier levels since I'm really interested in the story and less in the actual game play. For game play fun I'll play MP.
On the Poll where it asks will you chat? Where is the answer for only just before the next expansion is released to refresh on the story?
I'm gonna play through probably about half of the single player campaign before considering multiplayer, but then it all depends on how good the campaign is to see if I switch between the 2 evenly or just focus on online play. Also I'm definitely going to play on Normal my first time through, at least for the first few missions. I want to see what Blizzard is considering to be "normal" difficulty before trying to just jump to harder levels.
without singleplayer.. there wouldnt even be any starcraft game..
Singleplayer is VERY important... and it's alot cooler than multiplayer.. it's just not a competitive game.. it's alot more than just that...
I will wager that the majority of SC2 players are mostly only interested in the singleplayer content.. and will play alittle bit of multi...
I myself never ever played multi in SC and BW... only at the end... i concentrated on Singleplayer and completed that alot... because I find the story one of the most interesting ones ever.. in any film or movie... sci-fi-fantasy wise... it's got it all.
