Hi,

i don't know if this has been mentioned before, but i found a way to stack Mutalisks and keep them stacked stationary. You just have to select all Mutas and spam right click right below them until they are all stacked together. Then you use the patrol button and left click on the same spot you right clicked all the time and the Mutas will keep stacked. They will also attack anything that comes close, but i couldn't figure out a way to keep them perfectly stacked while moving

I included a video, they look like some kind of flower when you stack 100 of them =)

Edit:
Wow, finally SlayerSBoxeR himself found a way to put this to use:

GomTV GSL2 - SlayerSBoxeR vs Happiness - Game 1

Really cool, never thought of that. Do you guys think this is a viable technique in TvT Viking fights (or maybe even in other MUs)?

That look so pretty! If only we could find a use for something like that now xD

I believe you can group them with an overlord, as in sc1, and they will stack while moving around. I didnt know about the stacking while stationary tho. cool!

im gonna try out some if its possible to stack up, attack, stack fly back while stacking and keep doing

damn muta micro might work but its gonna take so damn much more apm if this method works lol

edit: ok i tested, doesnt work, as soon as they start attack or move they just spread out rly quickly, like when u stack 20 drones on a mineral and they all spread in like 0.5 sec

A lot of people are complaining that this game is too automated and requires low apm. If muta micro is possible but more difficult that would be awesome because it would be a real showing of elite play whereas bw muta play has become something most everyone who puts in a few hours of effort can do.

What happens when you do this on top of an opponents base and press hold pos? Looks nice though

Thanks FA

Well i don't think this can be used as an advantage, by stacking them this way you can only get 1 shot off before they start unstacking, so you can only shoot stacked while standing still (or moving only very slowly) :/

Its just patrolling, you can do that with everything. Even barracks can patrol ! Banshees vikings, every unit!

Yeah I did this behind an opponent's main mineral line with banshees in such a way that there was only one small space where ground units could defend from, from which they die instantly to the stack. I've been trying to find other uses for it in the past couple of days but haven't come up with much.

The problem is that if you move them back and forth, they do this turn animation which makes them fly separate routes. Also they slow down to shoot, which especially sucks while following stuff.

Well yeah, obviously. It hides how many vikings you actually have.

This is pretty common, especially in viking wars where you can assure that as soon as the opponent engages you, every single one of your vikings is in range DIRECTLY because of the stacking. Often causes them to lose the first viking and results in a slight edge.

How is that new, people did that since beta... If you could actually move with it it would be useful against marines and so on. However with thor's splash stacking gets countered pretty badly.

I have seen BratOK using this long ago with vikings actually.

For mutas I don't see any use of patrol stacking in real game. You can't move and you are very vulnerable to thors, fungal, storm etc..
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

Not only that, they will also shoot at the same time, one shotting anything that comes too close.

Phoenix stacking to take on mutas could be pretty sweet especially since you never even need to hit attack, you can just spam move commands near them.

It was new in March when the OP posted this (during the beta). The thread was resurrected because Boxer did the stacking trick with VIkings in the GSL.

You can do this with any flying unit, even flying terran buildings, carriers etc.

You could do it with motherships if you could build more than one.
