That would actually rule out alot of people who only joined the site for SC2 though, lol.

Well they could have done something kind of either-or requirement, for example, you can enter if you have 500 posts OR joined before date X. They could even have made it something like 500 posts or 400 posts and joined before Y or 250 and joined before Z.

It just seems very odd that they'd create a situation that insists all posts are equal contributions. I for one know that I'm not going to be hesitating to post my opinion anymore, even if its already been stated or I think it adds little to the discussion because of the precedent that this raffle set. We now know that not only will other TL users judge you on your post count, but so will the admins and staff.

lol. come on you are blowing this out of proportion, most vets who are active will at least have 500 posts and it is a give away commemorating the anniversary of their site... They could be alot stricter with the parameters if they wanted to be. Not having a post limit would mean that you will get spammers who just googled "HOTS beta key give away" swarming to their site.

I am ineligible for this raffle. Do you think I'm a spammer who just googled "HOTS beta key give away"? My point is, if I posted every time I had a minor opinion on something when reading a thread, or even just every time I started to type out a post, I'd be eligible. This raffle encourages me to post every time instead of trying to judge the merit of my own posts before posting.

I wasn't directing the comment at you, point was they had to have something to indicate activity and interest in their site, post count is a good indicator.

But what I'm saying is that people are being harmed for holding their own posts to a higher standard. Let me use your post from eariler on this page as an example:

500 meaningful posts? c'mon TL.net not everyone who has 500 posts has contributed meaningful posts every time... lame limit. this type of requirement will inspire more trolling comments and other non-useful posts.

maybe it's a conspiracy for mods to raise their ban count ^^

Now there's nothing wrong with these posts or the people who make them, but 95% of the time, if I started posting something like this I would decide not to during the posting process because, honestly, I don't think it adds enough to the thread to warrent using up other people's time reading it. Obviously you concluded differently and that's fine, but the fact of the matter is, I'm being punished for trying to keep discussions concise.

With that in mind, ask yourself has someone with 500 posts in a few months certainly contributed more to this site as someone who has made 100 over a few years? Is the distinction so clear that we should be blindly and indiscriminately rewarding post count without any other consideration? My answer to the latter is no.

Edit:

When TL had their cheerful contest, I couldn't participate because I'm godawful at photoshop. I wasn't complaining that TL prefers people who can use photoshop and that they hate me though

But my point is that I would have been rewarded for consciously going against what I thought was best for the site. In my opinion, adding one line nearly context-less posts to threads is actively hurting the community. Photoshopping adds to the community.

Are you honestly expecting TL to go through the history of every single person that could open an account with out a post limit just for a beta key raffle? You can't be serious. They need to narrow that number down with some kind of automated process, if you want to make an automated program that would detect the quality of the posts made by posters on an objective level with in the context of what ever thread or environment the post was made in be my guest.

What I suggested earlier is that they also take registration date into account. This would also be entirely automated and not involve ridiculous manual data entry as you suggest. Please do not try and put words in my mouth. You know what I'm suggesting, you already responded directly to the post suggesting it.

Besides that leave the moderation process to the moderators and provide your suggestions to the website / staff suggestions portions of the website.

Are you saying people shouldn't consider the quality of their own posts before posting? If so, I think we're just going to have to disagree on that point.

I'm not saying that, but your suggestions belong in that section of the website. Also if on principle it's just to have some form of quality control, then it has to draw the line some where regardless. Is it going to be 300 posts and 2 years? 150 posts and 5 years? Does the combination matter? Surely that number is entirely circumstantial and maybe the optimal solution was 500 posts with out an year limit in the first place. So such a process that you are suggesting is already in place. Registration date like I said is already incredibly unfair since it would advantage BW fans who might not care about SC2 over new fans who registered for SC2 when they found teamliquid.

Why 500 though? A number like 50 or 100 is enough to make sure brand new people who have never really posted don't get in. Anything higher just seems like encouraging people to post for the sake of posting.

As I said before, the fear of being left out of future raffles is enough to lower the standard of what I post. I'm not going to hesitate anymore to post a one line middle of the road opinion that everyone else has already expressed. This is apparently seen as a contribution to the community despite my personal believe that it is in fact the opposite.

I've always thought in the past that TL would discourage this kind of posting, but the fact of the matter is, the more I look around the more I see evidence to the contrary. Maybe I'm just worked up about it because I've held an incorrect assumption about this for years.

If its the goal of the TL staff to (somewhat unconditionally) reward post count, as I'm finally starting to believe that it is, then I retract my previous suggestions and opinions. They were made under the assumption that this was not the case.

Really nice idea! I like that Blizzard recognises sites that bring together a community and boost interest in Starcraft, and rewards them with Beta keys to give away :D

Sadly lurking and not posting means no entry for me. Keep up the good work though guys!

And one for people over 4k =p.

But in all seriousness, I can't think of any other way really for them to measure participation other than post count, there's no way to make sure lurkers are actually reading.

Took a long time to get 800ish posts. Many years of TeamLiquid surfing to achieve that.

Here's to the best of luck of everyone entering for keys!
