*This thread is best for 1v2, 1v4 or 1v5 AI, so check out my other thread if you are looking to do 1v3 AI.
UPDATE: Still works as of April 22, 2011 I discovered the easiest, (and cheesiest) way to win vs. ALL outmatched comp combinations. I call it the 'Burning Tide method'. It takes less than 14 minutes and no skill. I made this video to demonstrate what you need to do. I started out beating 1v3 insane comps using this strategy (thread), but then Cantankerous figured out that the 4th and 5th insane comps can be beaten this way. Even though the 4th and 5th insane AI are on the opposite team, they gather minerals for your team, LOL. In fact, having 1v5 insane AI makes it easier to win than having 1v4 insane AI.
This video shows me vs. 4 insane comps. I'm aware that there are no 1v4 or 1v5 insane AI achivements. I beat 1v4 insane AI in the below video simply to demonstrate how dang easy this strat is. You may be confused at this point, but it will all become clear if you follow the below detailed instructions:
Detailed instructions:
JUST GET TO 15,000 MINERALS BEFORE COMPS AND YOU WIN. -Pick map: Burning Tide, change gametype from 'melee' to 'custom' -Pick Protoss vs. 4 Zergs (adjust difficulty) -Start building probes -Build a pylon -Never forget to chronoboost. The whole reason I picked Protoss is for chronoboost so don't forget to constantly chorono. -Expand once (careful not to expand into the neighbor Zerg!) -Dont get supply blocked, you will only need 4 pylons TOTAL -Build 21 probes at each base -The computer will never attack you.
-Last but not least, run a probe around the map to pick up +100 mineral boosts. UPDATE: Apparently, each time the lava rises and recedes new +100 mineral boosts appear on the low ground! Send a probe out each time for even more minerals faster! (thx again Cantankerous).
*Once again, this is good for 1v2 and 1v4 AI. If you are trying for 1v3 AI, check out my other thread for the best B.O.
Enjoy your new 'OUTMATCHED CRUSHER' achievement and your welcome.
PRO TIP:
Do this with 1v4 very hard computers to get achievements for 1v4 very hard and 1v4 hard at the same time! Do the same with 1v3s and 1v2's
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Some people have had trouble so just to be clear about how to set up the game so that you do indeed start it correctly and end up getting the achievements. Follow this exactly:
Make sure you go first to multiplayer Create game pick burning tides change game setting to 'custom' move yourself down to say 'team 2' add 4 computers all to 'team 1' make sure they are all on same exact team adjust their skill difficulty (insane) make sure they are all on same exact difficulty start game.
Regarding using this technique for 3v3 custom game achievements: Confirmed: You can get 3v3 achievements this way. When you change the game setting to 'custom' it's true, it will not have two teams of 3. You will have to add 5 AI then drag one of the ai from the team with 4 players into the team with 2 players. THERE IS A TRICK TO THIS. What you have to do is drag the computer to the top part of the other team. There is a bar at the top of the team drag and drop the AI to that spot. The trick is just in the way you drag and drop the members of the team.
Because this is the definitive way to beat as many as 5 insane ai at the same time. The other one was talking about 3 insane ai. I thought that is impressive enough to warrent a new thread.
On September 29 2010 02:25 FuriousX wrote: How did u add insane AI?, i add an AI and it sets to very easy and the option to adjust the difficulty is locked...
If you change the game to 'custom' you will be able to change ai difficulty.
Don't give me too much credit though, I never would have even tried this if it weren't for the thread you created earlier. The little scoreboard ingame just got me wondering what method they were using to determine teams and it led to a bit of a "what if..?" moment.
Big thanks for taking the time to write the guide!
Cheers for the help, still cant get it to work keeps telling me ive got AI on my team n stuff, tried adding them all as seperate teams (1 insane ai in team 2,3,4 etc) will try again later, tired atm.
What Hier says is true, I did not get the 1v3 achievement for doing 1v4 very hard. I tried doing an actual 1v3 on that map (Meaning I didnt have a partner feeding me minerals) but I lost by just over 1k minerals after grabbing all the little crystals
Had to do 1v4, 1v3, and 1v2 separately. The 1v3 one was the closest because you don't get an AI feeding you (or maybe you sometimes do, depending on where he spawns, I didn't get lucky). So I just expanded twice, the rest was on auto pilot.
For people not getting the achievements: make sure you place all the computers in one team, obviously not in your own.
For the guys asking for 1v3 help - I can do a short little writeup on that if the OP does not come back for a bit - might be able to dig up replays too. It's definitely the closest one but it's very doable. If you're playing protoss the key is getting 2 expansions asap (bringing you up to 3 bases, all non gold) and constantly chrono boosting (don't let it wait, you need them asap to get a higher income).
In order to afford the early nexii - send a probe out immediately after the first lava tide and gather as many mineral caches as you can around the map (they're found only on low ground) and as soon as you've got 400 minerals above what you need for probe production throw up a nexus - then throw up a second nexus as soon as possible again by gathering mineral caches around the map (new ones spawn each tide). You'll likely get your third nexus started before the second has finished too.
If you do that quick you'll be on equal ground to the insane AI's very soon. Then you just need to gather mineral caches to get the edge.
It's also possible as zerg - and I found it easier. Just throw up an expansion every time you hit 300 minerals - you can get an insane income in no time.

1v3 insane is indeed harder than 1v4 or 1v5 insane. Follow this build exactly - This is me vs. 3 insane.

No problem man, explain away. It's part your finding as well.
I am curious why one doesn't choose zerg. Sure it costs a spawning pool and queen for each hatchery, but each hatchery+queen combination produces 2.5x the drones than a nexus, probably 2x of a chronoed nexus.
Anyway, maybe speed and number of workers isn't that important, since it spends more money that way.
Anyway, whatever works I guess.
edit:
Well 1v3 was easy as zerg. Realize that the only matchup you need to set the computer to insane is 1v2. 1v3 and 1v4 can just be very hard AIs.
Anyway, the strategy I used was roughly 15 hatch, 14 pool, 18 hatch, and built a queen at each hatch. You probably only need two queens though.
I build 1 pair of zerglings, they are very good at collecting all the mineral shards quickly.
I just took the 3 start location spots (not any golds), and had about 18-20 drones on each hatchery, and I beat the computers 15k to 12700 or something.
edit: I think 18 workers is pretty optimal, because there's only 7 patches. Technically you might get the most from having 21, so it might be worth it though.
i did it with toss, but wouldn't this be easier with terra and fast expand double orbital? Mules from 2 CCs should be a bigger factor than chrono boost, even to make up for the barracks you have to build, no?
I think massing orbitals to MULE the golds could potentially work. They take longer to mine so travel time is more negligable. They also take good advantage of golds in general unlike other races.
Wait what? Is this a new achievement? Or is it just the old one where you had to win against X amount of AI's but instead of doing it on a melee style map you do it on a get more minerals map? Or what? D: Pretty easy to do this with canonrushing isnt it?
First of all you don't have to beat more than 2 insane A.I.s for the achievments, it's the 4 very hard A.I. one that's hard, thank god you don't have to do vs 3 or 4 insanes.
Ehm.... You can make this even easier..... Just go to map editor and creat a map were the ai don't start with any miniral patches and on an island. Yes then build one air unit and you win 1 vs 7 insane AIs since its a CUSTOM game you have to complete the achievement in.
wow that was ridiculously easy hahaha especially the 1v2 for some reason both coms were mining for me so i just alt tabbed took a shower and got those achievements
thanks for looking out and my outmatched crusher achievement
1v3 was definitely the hardest, I won with 1500-1425 lol. My own fault for not realizing they didn't have to be on Insane till afterwards, tho I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes...
Not sure I should admit it publicly but I can attest that it works even after patch 1.1.1, and I found it's easier as terran. Didn't try toss but watched the video.
10 supply, 12 rax, 15 orbital, and then you can build CC's in base around 16 and 20 or so (not sure on those numbers).
When CC's finish, load em up with 5 SCVs and fly them to nearby expos (don't have to worry about lava and maynerding), and make them orbitals asap as well.
I only used one mule in my main, and saved the rest for expos so my main wouldn't mine out.
I beat 2 Insane AI by about 7-8k minerals, and I beat 3 Insane AI by 2k minerals.
I did 1v3 with zerg and I won by 3k minerals or something, it was ridiculously easy. just expanded twice and pumped drones, no queen or anything.. 21 drones on each base is max saturation.
What makes it easier too with zerg is that you can spread your overlords all over the map to scout for minerals, then just send 1 drone and shift queue it on all the minerals..
easy peasy string bikini! Haven't tried terran with O/C yet though, but I still think zerg can mass drones faster, and since we only need to get to 15k resources I think zerg is better.. perhaps MULEs would be stronger if we needed more than 15k, say 30k or something. Not sure.
EDIT: correction: just checked replay, I won by 3k minerals
I dont really see the point of doing it this way. The whole point of achievements is to accomplish something, but if you do this then you didnt really accomplish anything. It doesnt even unlock a picture or anything so why would you pretty much cheat to get it?
Thanks. I had planned to skip these because I'm no good and they are tedious but this was pretty easy. Can also be done for the 3v3 mix AI matches (although for some reason you have to do each difficulty individually for these) if you don't feel like doing those either. Too bad there's no 4v4 map like this

You have to use teams 2 and 3. 3 players will go in each and team 1 will go away. Make yourself a ref first to get it set up, you'll figure it out.

The lobby is very annoying. You have to drag the 4th player to the second team very specifically to get it to work. Drop it on top of the team 2 bar where it says team 2. I had trouble at first too, so stupid.
On October 01 2010 01:14 CharlieMurphy wrote: wait so the comps just keep running into the lava lol?
I don't think they ever even try to move out of their base. Zerg, for example, will make ling, roaches, and a hydra and a couple spore crawlers. But then they all just bunch up and sit there while you out mine them and win.

Method works! Thanks for the tips. It does feel a bit "cheesy," but the way I think of it is that it saved me a lot of time and frustration. I think that is a valid pursuit in this day and age.
Cool idea. Doing this against 3 comps is a lot harder but possible. I did 3 insane by playing zerg against zerg. Getting all expos fast then building other hatcheries at the top of my ramp to mine the golds when the lava isn't around. Then building 100 drones and never getting a pool.
I was so bored yesterday night I decided to do this achievement and it was quite some effort to pull off. 1vs3 Insane is so hard but I managed to pull it off with Protoss and Zerg with 1vs4 insane. Had 72 probes with protoss and about 110 drones as zerg. Was quite some fast income lawl
No offense, but doing it on this map is retarded. If it works on this map then it will also work on any custom map that you make as well. So just make one with a trigger that immediately calls a win for team 1, and use that instead. Wasting time on gathering minerals is for dummies.

This is a Blizzard published map. Achievements don't work in custom games with custom triggers, except for this one because Blizzard made it.
Why not pick Terran and just harass their bases with banshees or drops. Storm drops or infestors or whatever you like. Since they won't even attack you and you won't have to rely on glitches and have some fun meanwhile
Just got outmatched crusher after about 40 minutes. As long as you always have 1 probe microing around for the mineral shards there's pretty much no way you can lose. Get 3 bases up, 64 total probes (21 per base and 1 to micro) and let the achievements flow.
I have a hunch that everytime the lava flows then recedes new +100 mineral boosts appear on the map. Can anyone confirm this? I'll check tonight but at work right now.

Sweet, then it will be even easier to do these achievements... just send a probe out everytime the lava recedes! Thanks for looking into that Cantankerous. :D

Considering it tells you during the game... I wouldn't be surprised.
I just tried this, and I lost by about 2000-3000 minerals.
I was also only allowed three insane comps not four like was posted. Am I doing this wrong?
*edit* Tried moving myself to team 2 and was then allowed four on other team.
*edit2* Tried again with Terran against four insane comps and won by about 1200 minerals. I forgot that I didn't need to make them insane difficulty, which is why it might have been more difficult. I was wondering why everyone was saying it was cake, while I just barely survived. :D Anyway, I got three of the achievements so this is a good find. I'm off to get the others now.

Hiya, 3500 mps.
Very nice. Thanks for this quality submission Jibba. I love graphs!
Ugh...I wish I'd read this thread before I spent over 30 minutes cannon crawling to get the 1v3 hard achievement. For some reason the AI wasn't smart enough to ever use siege mode to stop me, even though all three of them were terran.
hahaha originial , wouldn't have tought of this , it seems with patch 1.1 the insane AI got fixed to protoss cannon rushes and don't pull of their workers for 3 buildings , I will use this for achievements ^^
I tried all 3 races vs 3 AI Insane (the hardest way possible) and youcan do it with any race. Just make sure to expand ASAP and use whatever advantage your race gives you - mules, queens or chronoboots.
Also vs 3 insane you must pickup some minerals from the fields as the margin is very close indeed. The rest ot the variations, you can pretty much take a nap while doing it.
On a side note: Is there any ohter map, that allows such a or a similar funky stuff?
Does this still work? I tried it, but for some reason I can only put Very Easy computers....
Sorry. It does work (1.13)
I went against 4 insane zergs as Protoss. Just having two bases was not enough, unfortunately. I had three nexus(es), one at my base, one at an expansion, and one on highground just beside a few patch of high yield minerals...
When I got my 15k, the computer was at 14k. But I suppose I was silly enough that I lost like 4-5 probes randomly, so I was not being 100% efficient.

You can do 1v3 easier if you go 3 bases (all of them main starting locations) with 18-18-17 probes at each (1 probe for searching minerals on lower ground = 54/54 supply). Won it this way with a very comfortable margin.
I just tried it last night with 1.1.3 and it is indeed possible, I got all of the outmatched achievements, for 1 v 3 very hard I suggest using Terran and getting 3 Orbital Commands, I only built one supply depot and maxed out SCVs at 42, keep an even balance at all three bases. Hotkey all orbital commands and use mules the second they are available. I did not even have to go pick up Mineral Caches.
Go terran. Get 2 mineral expansions, make an inbase command center, then put an expo on top of a ledge but close to gold. Start spamming MULEs. You will get 15k without failure.

Hmm if I remember correctly the 3v3 achievements require you to play 3 games. Your team has to consist of 3 zergs in one game, then 3 terrans, then 3 toss. After you win all these games, you get the achievement. The other achievement is that the opponents are all the same race also. I'm pretty certain this should work. Double check the requirements for the achievement, then try it and let me know.
Pro tip: You can get 2 achievements at once if you make the computers the same race also. For example in one game make you and your teammates all zerg and also make all of your opponents zerg as well. Then do the same thing next game for terran and then for protoss. When you finish all three games you should get 2 achievements for 'kin 3v3'.
What's the 3v3 Kin achievements thing? When I look at the list of achievements, I only see 4v4 kin .
However, there is 3v3 Mix vs the Ai and 3 vs 3 AI Mix - are those the two you're thinking of, GreatFall? If it is, it works the first time for me - I don't need to play 3 games per difficulty level .

Nice way to think outside the box, GreatFall, even if it can be construed as a bit of cheese.
I completed these achievements today (1v2 Insane; 1v4 Very Hard; 1v3 Very Hard and 3v3 Insane Mix [both]).
Will have replays and YouTube clips soon.
I found 1v3 VH the hardest - I used Z for this one but the trick is to scout those mineral drops to help with the resource gathering. They really help alot!

don't go for gold exp. i've done it by playing terran (haven't tried as other races). do a standard OC opening -10 supply -12 rax -15 OC (don't make a marine).
while your OC is building send a scv to one of the allied bases (empty) and build a CC. when you have another 200 minerals send another scv to make a cc at the 3rd base. constant scv production (make sure to maynard**). build 1 additional CC at each base (2 OC at each base).
USE all the OCs to mule and build scvs until 63 supply - 21 at each base.
**when you transfer scvs to your new bases watch for the "mineral pick ups" for a few hundred extra minerals.
you should pass the 3 computers at around 13k (fyi, i believe zerg ai mine slightly slower)
This is such a cheezy way to get the achievement. I dunno I just pick the island maps and turtle up like crazy. Did the 1v4 very hard achievement that way. Took me a good hour though as protoss.
It doesn't seem to work for me. I cannot change the A.I.'s difficulty, it is set to "Very Easy" and the dropdown box is disabled. Maybe they "fixed" it? My SC version is 1.1.3.16939. See here:
Ok, got it too . I changed the category from "Melee" to "Custom" and then I could change the A.I.'s difficulty to "Insane". I played against 2 Insane A.I.s because thats the last one I needed. I put them in one team against me, but we ended up ALL in the north team and as our minerals alltogether were at 15k we ALL were victorious AND I got the achievement. LOL!
Worked for me! I failed the first 5 or 6 times. The key for me, was to keep making probes from the original nexus, pushing them to the expos once I had 21 at my main. Also, after 3 bases up and 1 saturated, i would run a probe around the map between lava phases. I barely won so if I hadn't picked up those minerals it would have been another defeat. Good luck!
Edit: Also you MUST choose Custom instead of Melee.
Worked for me, the 1v3 was the hardest obviously, some tips I have are to try to get those nexus's warping in ASAP, if you get some mineral drops fast you can warp in one or two nexuses really early without having to stop probe production. Also once your main is saturated use it to send probes to your expansions (when lava isn't up) to get them saturated as fast as possible. Also really look around for those mineral drops they definitely make a big difference.
if you're having a trouble with 1v3 just play normal (EDIT: on burning tide) as whatever race you normally play as. mass up in the middle with the army, wait until the lava goes down, and then a-move into one of the enemy bases. or you could go like, mass void ray or something but i'm not sure that you have enough time to do so.
this only works if you can beat a very hard in 1v1, though

question: does gas count? or is it just minerals?
Nicely done . I believe only minerals count so I don't bother with gas at all.
I had never played on that map before, but it was insanely easy. Just to ensure that I won, I never stopped pumping workers from my two safe bases (I think I had about 40 at each at the end) and I even made nexuses near two ramps by gold minerals and distance-mined up and down to put me over the top.
First, I did this achievement against 3 Very Hard - got the achievements. Then I continued to do the vs 4 Very Hard - had one of them on my Northern Team (not setup team - they were all against me), but he started gathering minerals for me as well being at my side. \o/
All was good, I won with several thousand due to 3 probes constantly scouting around for pickup-minerals, but I didn't get any achievements this time - therefore still lacking of the vs. 4.
Edit; Or maybe it's because one of the AI is actually winning (with me), since it's being on the Northern Team.
Anyhow, giving it another go. I'll double edit this, if it works this time.
* DOUBLE EDIT *
Worked this time. Weird. Confirmed 17 February 2011.
Why is the only AI difficulty i can select here very easy? How do i have to launch the game? Even when choosing custom instead of meelee it doens't work for me.
Took me 30minutes and got all the achievements done first go. As you described have around 21 probes on each Nexus, use 2 probes to run around after Lava surge came. And its really not a problem at all.

Hi Iyerbeth, I explain how to do that at the bottom of my original post.

But when the game starts, I suddenly have one of the AI's on my team, vs. three AI's on the other team.
What am I doing wrong?
You're doing nothing wrong. It appears as though the computer is on your team, but in reality he is not on your team. For example, you and a computer may be on 'north team' but that doesn't mean the computer is actually on your team. If you win the game you still get the win vs. 4 comps. Hope this helps.
just wondering, i patch 3 i couldnt make the game as custom to make the AI as insane, is me or everyone else? because if thats the case then this strategy is no valid anymore

Hmmm, I just tried it again and it still works. Go to multiplayer, then create game, select burning tide map, then change 'category:' from 'melee' to 'custom' then add your computers and change the difficulty. Should still work.
I did it tonight (v 1.3) and it works. The 1v3 is the toughest. It took me 3 tries. I tried the protoss twice, and then gave up and used Terran. Built 5 OC's and muled. I barely beat it with about 65 SCV's and mules.

You don't have to do the 1v3 against insane as there's no achievement for that. Do it 1v2 vs insane and 1v3 and 1v4 against Very Hard for all the tricky achievements. I did it as protoss with a fast double expand. Won by like 5k both times so it's really ezpz. Still works as of april 10th.

Thanks dicey, I wanted to update the main post with updates; however, I think since it is now an 'old post' I can't edit the main post. The 'edit' button is not available anymore. It's good to see that it still works though!
You can also do 1v1 Insane Ai like this to get your 100 Insane AI wins. It's what I did, figured it'd be faster than doing 40 minute games where I have a decent chance of losing :D

Dude... You can easily cheese the Insane AI and get under 6 minute wins with each race. 8 pool cannon rush proxy rax + bunkers

Well this is a bit sad, you get an achievement without having performed the difficult task that would warrant the achievement.. Why then would you be happy with getting the badge and the points?

Satisfaction of "beating the system"?
Hmm ok, whatever floats your boat I guess..
You are so noble.... ................................................... ................
This tactic no longer works! I tried this to get the 2v1 Insane AI achievement and after about 8 mins got attacked by a marauder/ marine ball... Damn blizzard patching making achievements impossible to get..
