The latter is a more immediate issue: nobody wants to miss out on the sweet sweet revenue from the biggest sporting event on earth. And sure, the English FA is probably pissed off about Infantino's bullshit, but pissed off enough to tell all English fans that they aren't competing, and there's no chance of it "coming home" ever again? And yes, EU clubs pulling out will ruin it for the rest of the world too. It's like the olympic basketball tournament when NBA players were banned, and it was "amateurs only". I understand the spirit, but nobody was invested in that (just like nobody is really invested in olympic football). A world cup without European teams will lose viewership, and thus the revenue stream dries up: it's a lose-lose for everybody. So FIFA just doesn't believe UEFA will split off (and are almost certainly right: UEFA is not only England and Germany, but also Bulgaria and North Macedonia, countries whose federations receive a large chunk of their annual budget from FIFA programs), and acts like it. | ||
