From what I saw on twitter of influencers going around other LATAM countries, I expected the atmosphere to be tense, but it was a chill watch. Some brazilians celebrated england's goal, some didn't. No one was agressive towards me or made me feel uneasy.
Lots of argentinians in Rio (I went out a few nights in Copacabana) and I saw zero incidents.
I also work with a lot of mexican people. From what you see online you think they would rather see Messi loose, but a lot of them were happy when he got the cup in 2022. People need to stop reposting others people ideas online.
Bottom line is Argentina got further than expected but crumbled when facing one tidy rival.
Lots of injuries and tired legs didn't help. Scaloni probably didn't want to make big changes mid-WC (like he had to do in 2022). Nico paz, Barco, Almada on the bench could have played more minutes, but Argentina was against the ropes all knockout stage to play around.
Spain played way better football all WC and are the deserved champions.

That’s a legit strategy if you are the inferior team, penalty shoot out has big enough variance (+ some goalkeepers are a bit better at it than others, or some are worse)

Penalties would be incredible for Argentina and they would go into them as heavy favorites honestly. Dibu is a monster and saves at least one pen basically each shootout and has something like a 36% save rate. Spain is not a good penalty taking team, so it was the clear strategy outside of stealing a goal from some Messi magic.

Honestly, media reporting here did not make a big deal out of staying or leaving but of punching people in the face or throat. That is not acceptable behavior no matter how you put it

The guard of honour by the winners is standard protocol. Rather easy to do if you've won the most important prize in your career.

There was zero interaction with the fans at that moment. None of the players are even looking. It's quite clear what was happening and having your back turned at that moment takes a conscious effort. Whatever France did last time is irrelevant because they 1. What they did can also be disrespectful and 2. There's a difference between walking away and making a disrespectful gesture.

In the context of the general hate on Argentina after the match, it reminded me of the bad fame - deserved - that portugal and portuguese teams have had in the past for flopping and just trying to cheat with small antics during games. I think that this has died down a lot recently thanks to VAR, the fact many players play in England and a professionalization of our academies. It really has changed the mentality of our players on the pitch.
Unfortunately now that means that the only reason to actually talk about the portuguese team is because of the 41 year old.

The "no contact" flopping has been tuned down, and VAR punished a few instances.
The theatrcal flops with SOME contact have not gone anywhere though. Players use them to get the attention of both the ref and VAR, and it gets rewarded with cards to the opponent, free kicks, penalties and cancelled goals, and it is never punished. Faking injuries is part of the game, and it is disgusting.
Especially with VAR, si would love that flops by light touches could also be punished with yellow cards.

Just saw that Newcastle have signed Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim during the world cup. This is a fantastic pickup imo
He's 20, left footer, super fast, 15 g/a in 30 games last season and was excellent for my Bundesliga fantasy team. He likes to cross from the left rather than cut inside and is very good at it, I think he and Woltemade are going to be a great match.
Unfortunate for Hoffenheim though, that's a big hole to fill.

Pirlo's record definitely looks pretty sketchy on a quick glance. Managed in Juve U23 and 3 clubs in Italy and Turkey, but never stuck around more than a year. Currently he's on a managerial stint in Dubai.
I guess a respected legend can sort out some of the internal issues, but I don't think there's going to be any managerial masterclass based on his efforts so far.
