And here comes the excuse. Why didn't VAR officials alert the Ref immediately after said decision? Are the Refs mics just for show? This makes no sense.

Tottenham had an extremely dubious run of decisions against Brighton last year

I think Liverpool gets a lot of VAR calls because they play the crazy high line and rely on the offside trap. Combine this with the current "let close calls play out and VAR will check it later" offside policy and they're bound to get a lot of VAR offsides. That doesn't really indicate whether they benefit from it or not. It's a bit like good dribblers probably get fouled a lot statistically, but that doesn't automatically mean they're somehow protected by the refs.

Who would even replace Ten Hag? I googled that question and several articles mentioned Arne Slot (Feyenoord) and that seems rather unlikely.

I'd consider Arne Slot tactically equal to Ten Hag and he does better in interviews and media ( I can see him become like Ancelotti over time). But it would make little sense to appoint him at Utd at the moment, except to keep people happy.

Fighting words, and every team should back them up. I said previously fire the two Refs the one in charge and the other sideline official. The rest can be transferred to other tiers. Again the excuse they say happened makes no sense in any scenario.

Remember Webb said they would make said changes from last year. Still nothing.

Well i dont know the setup of the VAR team/control room in EPL, but elsewhere the full VAR team would be out. Regardless of them correctly communicating (if they did) onside, if they see the game resume without being in the center of the filed they should alert and call back!

As for the main ref it depends on the recording of the communication. If he was clearly told it was on or offside.

This on the offside part, then the baf judgement of the other things should penalize him but that depends on the practice in the league which i dont know. Around here he would probably suspendend for a few weeks and then either demoted to tier 2 or very limited tier 1 low relevance games presence.

Without going into conspiracy theories, if decisions are so blatantly wrong and officials use reasoning that doesn't make sense, is it possible that these decisions are made because of extortion or financial gains on the betting market?

You would hope not. Surely it's mere incompetence.

I just did a quick google of PGMOL apologies in the last 2 years. Arsenal have had 2, and teams playing against Spurs have 2 so maybe the refs are spurs fans

Incidentally there have been more apologies given to teams playing against Crystal Palace than any other, with 3. I would imagine that if there had been a big spike in bets on Palace, it would have come out by now.

There needs to be serious overhaul of PGMOL and the entire reffing system as a whole. It's unacceptable that the mistake happened, and even more unacceptable that nothing was done once such a huge error was realized. It wasn't handing out a penalty where a player could miss it still, it was a scored goal.

The fact that the refs were literally reffing a game (the only time this season btw) in UAE just 48 hours before they reffed this game reeks of fishiness. I don't want to jump to conspiracy theories, but it doesn't sit right. Shouldn't be flying 15 hours just a day before a huge game anyways when that's going to impact your ability to concentrate and make the right decisions.

Heads need to roll. Howard Webb needs to resign or get sacked and the entire VAR team from this game needs to be fired. VAR needs to be operated by an independent 3rd party.

From what I have read, the VAR believed on the on-field ref had given the goal. This was the mistake. The VAR checked that Diaz was onside and told the on-field ref 'Check completed' which the on-field ref naturally assumed Diaz was offside. The VAR didn't realise the mistake until the free kick was taken and by then it was too late. The rules of the game explicitly state that once play has restarted after a VAR check they cannot go back to the VAR.

It was a bad mistake but I think the reaction has been a bit OTT. Making the VAR tell the on-field ref onside or offside would have prevented this.

If you sack the officials for this, where are you finding better ones? I am a WBA fan and the Championship refs are worse.

The abuse received by refs is appalling. The expectations for accuracy and speed are sky high. The tolerance for mistakes is near zero. Nobody suggests a player should be sacked when he misses a penalty. Nobody implies he deliberately missed either. Why would anyone want to be a ref?

No, no it is not. Indeed this is probably the first time
I’ve ever heard the claim made.

Just what point are you trying to make anyway?
