Ukraine is playing poorly right now, Romania better at getting the chances in the goal. Good defence and insane intensity going forward.

But everyone's giving their all, while Ukraine's stars are walking on the pitch. Ukraine is not exactly a star studded squad either, but yeah, Romania is looking strong!

R9 or Mbappe or even Owen were just as or more impressive than Rooney imo. Similarly Musiala has impressed me a lot - but there's nothing weird about a young guy being a fantastic dribbler. However Bellingham was just a complete boss of the midfield - something you normally don't see until people are in their mid 20s and at their expected peaks. Tbh maybe Pogba at his best was something kinda along the same line when only slightly older. Peak Pogba was pretty amazing though. Euro 2004 Rooney was up there with the best international tournament performances I’ve seen, and hands down up there in terms of English players certainly. I think Rooney still had a phenomenal career but I think partly the way the game evolved maybe stopped him being even greater, in addition to maybe him not being able to keep himself in the kind of physical condition that a Ronaldo did. If Rooney had a best position it’s as that second striker/number 10 role, and I think the 4-4-2 that was so commonplace at the start of his career accommodated him better than the 4-4-3 which supplanted it. He wasn’t a bad dribbler, but he wasn’t not quite as good in those tight spaces as the modern top dogs in those wide forward positions. He wasn’t slow but he didn’t have that express pace that a Saka or a Vinicius have. He had a great, prolific season for United playing as their 9 too, but I think he was a little short to really be that focal point. It’s probably testament to how talented Rooney was that a player who became top scorer for both Manchester United and England, won the Champions League and numerous other honours but yet it still feels that he underachieved

To put it in context 19 year old Rooney scored 11 goals in the Premier League and didn't win any trophies playing for Man U under Ferguson. Pretty amazing for a 19 year old, but not on Bellingham's level. Robben was pretty effing boss in 2004. I think all of Holland remembers that match against the Czech republic where we were winning, subbed off Robben and the team collapsed, losing 2-3. One of the worst subs ever.
