There is a shortage of referees at all levels as it is so who replaces them? The Championship referees are significantly worse. I would not have been surprised if Botman's 'tackle' wasn't a penalty with a Championship referee. I think the FA and Premier League need to take a zero tolerance approach to harrassment/abuse of officials, then more people may want to be a referee which would increase the quality of the officiating. Sometimes I think we have the officials we deserve.

its one thing to condemn death threats and such, another to attempt to protect them from all criticism entirely.

I haven't seen loads of headlines and sheer insane outrage about Salah missing a penalty. Its the same thing.

Its the same thing. ....thats not even close to being the same thing. the far more practical and realistic approach is to just improve the financial package of being a referee. the idea that referees could and should be shielded from all criticism is a pipe dream. its better to just make it worth their while rather than advocating for something thats never going to happen.

That might work too. I thought PL referees would be millionaires like the players they have to babysit, but turns out that a PL referees makes around 70k a year (between salary and game commissions). It's not a bad wage, but considering half the players make more than that in a single game, it's worth considering redistributing a bit more of the TV money to the referees rather than the clubs...
