He was subbed off after the first half. He was amaazing though - scored two goals (and they were both fantastic), one assist, got one Armenian player sent off, should've had a penalty that wasn't called. Guy is an absolute beast.

Major crowd trouble when Nigeria was knocked out. Ghana's players had to evacuate the field instead of celebrating their achievement. Tear gas was required to disperse the crowd.
And Senegal vs Egypt had the biggest laser show the continent has ever seen when the Egyptians were trying to shoot penalties. It was an all-around remarkable qualification round. African qualification seems pretty rough if you end up with a shootout between the Afcon finalists for one place and Tunisia vs Mali for another. I’m not sure how you fix that. Africa is too big to do a league qualification like South America, but doesn’t quite have the places awarded to do it like in Europe where (usually) you don’t end up with better teams eliminating each other. Next time they will get 9.5 places total. That should make for some more less luck-of-the-draw-dependant qualifiers.

For me there is no difference to pot 2 and 3 with maybe exception of Netherlands/Germany.
The location of the world cup matters a lot and I think many people will underestimate Asian and African nations (in the group stages)

Someone in pot 2 is going to be very happy getting into the same group with Qatar

I remember Morocco getting a lot of hype last time, but they only had some close matches. Only 1 country from Asia or Africa even made it past the group stage...

Even so, out of the African and Asian nations, Qatar seems to be the worst performer by a good distance. I know they play home games, but they'll have to overperform MASSIVELY to not come dead last in their group, let alone make it to the knockout stage. Their presence in pot 1 is hilarious.

Uhm are you guys aware that Qatar won the Asian cup in 2019 with an overall goal difference of 19-1? Sure that was 3 years ago, and according to wikipedia they havent performed that well since then, but I'd say have as good a chance of advancing as russia did four years ago. They have "banana skin" written all over them. My guess is that once again, there will be a lot of hype around some african teams, just to see them underperform, again.
There is the potential for some unequal groups, but imo the system of seeding all teams according to ranking instead of only the top7/8 is still a massive improvement over how it used to be before. For germany, I'm way more worried about who we are going to draw from pot 3 than who we get from pot 1. If it is a team like serbia or poland, we're probably going home after the group stages again.

Germany may not be great currently. But being afraid of Poland? Come on now.

Ah I remember when the fake Löw beat the real Löw 2:0 ^^ good times! Or the mighty 2:2 against Hungary, yeah they have absolutely no need to worry about Serbia or Poland at all.

Well world cup in Russia would always be dominated by Europe...
I compare this year's world cup to 2010

Well world cup in Russia would always be dominated by Europe... I compare this year's world cup to 2010 Time for some stats! Euro teams: 1990: 10/16, 6/8 (Italy) 1994: 10/16, 7/8 (USA) 1998: 10/16, 6/8 (France) 2002: 8/16, 3/8 (South Korea & Japan) 2006: 10/16, 6/8 (Germany) 2010: 6/16, 3/8 (South Africa) 2014: 6/16, 4/8 (Brazil) 2018: 10/16, 6/8 (Russia) Euro teams seem to do a lot better in Europe, but there is also that USA edition. I wonder how much of that is the weather and how much is playing in a 'western' country? I found out it's not actually very warm in Qatar in december. Average temperatures are only 15 - 24 C (59 - 75 F).

Football's coming home (to the United States)

Wait, I just realized I'm going to be living in Belgium when the WC starts, so football's coming home (to Belgium)

It's hard to ever bet against France but I would have rated Italy to have the greatest chance just a few days ago.
