If Everton wins their game, City wins 1 and loses vs Villa, and Villa wins all 3 remaining games, then Liverpool would be 6th place after 18 rounds!

But sadly, while the season started with an absurd amount of goals, this is one way it has become less exciting. Quoting myself from october here: The goal per game average is at 3.68 right now. Average for every PL season is 2.66 (hasn't been above 3 since 1966.) Now, this number has dropped to 2.74. Seeing how high it was at first, looks like we've had a fairly low average tally since then. Italy however is at 3.12 midway through the season! Certainly in conflict with what one might think when thinking of Italian football, but they're scoring - and conceding- a lot of goals this season.

If not for factoring in the presumed strength of the teams, and if we were to only look at the current league placement, then we'd be looking at something like 6-10 potential winners halfway through the season. Even when factoring in the presumed strength, we're looking at 3-4. (I'd consider City potential winners even if they were in Aston Villa's situation, but I don't consider Aston Villa a potential winner. ) But sadly, while the season started with an absurd amount of goals, this is one way it has become less exciting. City’s form is looking a bit ominous for the rest of the league. Feels like other sides bar Liverpool don’t have that extra gear to shift to and win every game, and Liverpool haven’t been able to access it this season either. Shades of 2016 which was a great, historic season but realistically if any of the big hitters had come into their stride that year they would have dominated the league table.

I mean, I might just have them as current league favorites myself, too. But I think it's really close between them, United and Liverpool. Maybe something like a 30% city 25% united 25% liverpool 20% any other team.
