EDIT: Or is the ban effective only the season after this one? I think I saw the UCL season 21-22 mentioned somewhere, which would mean they still have a year to go before the ban hits.

Yes I know. But I'm pretty sure UEFA wants to appear strong, harsh whatever but they already know that City is going to protest against it. And my guess is that UEFA already knows that they won't let the decision stand and give them a lesser punishment. Everybody now knows that the threat of getting banned exists. It's kind of a preventive measure. Might be totally wrong and I'd be happy if that ruling stood after the protest but can we really see a world in which cl 20/21 is played without city, 21/22 is played without city and .... inter, 22/23 without inter and .... real and so on? Would hurt the competition and in result UEFAs income. On February 15 2020 16:40 Bacillus wrote: EDIT: Or is the ban effective only the season after this one? Oh well, this is going to cause chaos for Man City with players going there and not being able to play in Europe for 1 or 2 seasons and then also the same with the coach will he want 1 or 2 seasons without European football or is the premier league enough for him.

Clubs like Barcelona or Juve have ungodly salaries that are close to or beyond the supposed cap, and sign tons and tons of young players before they're expensive to avoid being in trouble later. They recruit more than they need and their cachet means those youngsters will prefer to go there rather to tier 2 or 3 clubs that might actually need them to progress and maybe reach tier 1 at some point (which would be the right way to grow as a club, rather than buying in like PSG or City). There's no fair play. What about the pressure those historically big clubs are putting on UEFA to have a private league? Isn't that worse? FFP was a nice idea but the application has been a joke. I have zero sympathy with City but yes, all these powerhouse traditional ‘historic’ clubs are pushing for a Super League. As much as fans like to throw the ‘plastic club’ accusation at the nouveau riche clubs, their own clubs are happy to sacrifice fair competition for more of the pie, and eventually having their own pie. Was an interesting discussion on a podcast recently around this and associated things. Really the time was the 90s and early 2000s to rein this trend in, basically due to the expansion of television internationally. Clubs that got that international fan base in that period got larger and larger revenue streams, but unlike other forms of entertainment products people don’t jump ship off their football team, in general anyway. With the exception of Ajax who are somewhat handicapped by playing in the Eredivisie, the big teams in that era of Champions League are the super clubs now, by and large. A team like Spurs would need years of performing like they did under Pochettino to be anywhere near Man United in terms of that kind of revenue stream. The money and how it’s distributed is a massive, intractable problem and how one mitigates it is almost impossible without doing something radical. A mid tier Premier League team can’t really compete long-term with the big boys there for example. But their budget dwarfs Celtic or Rangers up north, indeed some Championship teams do. But Celtic’s Champions League money gives them an unassailable financial advantage in Scotland.

They did well today though, should have scored but obviously didn't and lost the game but were never out of it due to their solid defensive display.
