I think he knew exactly what he was doing but I don't think it was a penalty. Danny Ricc weaving all over the place at 200+mph was more worthy of a penalty for me.

and there we go again. Absolutely pathetic performance by Seb, what a joke. Cant wait for Ferrari getting them a proper #2 next to Lec.

that. he maximized the outcome of the situation ignoring probable/possible safety issues.

Bullshit, they can't really know if Vettel had controll over the car. Yet they were pretty fast to give the penalty. They should've waited for the telemetry data after the race and then decide.
This just shows how this sport is terribly mismanaged.

Nah they probably had his telemetry and saw that Vettel went full on the throttle way too early. I still think this is harsh but for fucks sake Vettel absolutely caused this situation himself with two fairly bad mistakes

So in my mind there's zero doubt that Vettel was being stupid there. He did not deserve to keep his position. However, this goes against the philosophy of "let them race" that they've been trying to push for a while now. From an entertainment perspective, that penalty makes no sense. If they wanted to penalize, a much better solution would be to tell Vettel to let Hamilton pass, and have him fight to retake the position.

I'm not a fan of the penalty, but of course it has to be stated that Vettel made a mistake. Again. Hamilton is more consistent, you gotta have to admit that.
Vettel's behaviour after the race was understandable but also kinda childish. Schumacher would have probably beaten up a steward, though.

Oh 100%. I really liked Vettel's antics after the race. The 2 points they added to his Super License for it is a bit annoying, but it probably won't matter all that much.

Vettel so funny poor guy. He has defo lost his racing edge he used to be leading races forever, think he still holds certain records for leading the most laps etc, but since last year he makes so many unforced errors just like this weekend in Canada. Now whether you agree with the 5-second penalty, he made a huge mistake which has cost him the race again just like the huge mistakes he made last season which cost him a lot of races.

Also what would have happened if Hamilton wasn't able to find his brake pedal in time and Vettel took them both out, would Vettel have got a grid penalty for the next race?

Imo the worst thing about Vettel's mistake is that Ham wasn't really pushing him all that much. Vettel wasn't under insane amount of pressure trying to defend and close the corners against a faster car behind. So in this sense its more impressive that Leclerc 2 places behind didn't make any mistakes while a 4-times world champion did.

Just a good reminder of what Vettel does when car behind him is faster (which was barely the case in RedBull championship era).

That would have been a grid penalty, yes. Probably 5 places

Vettel currently on Plan F for the France GP.

lmao. guess its for the fastest lap at the end of the GP

Bollard flying off is the most exciting part of the race

Nvm Final 2 laps are exciting. Not bad for a 53 laps race where 51 laps are a procession

Sucky for Norris for losing 3 places at the end after fighting mechanical issues for so long =/

F2, F3, Formula E are really exciting to watch.
F1 is a snoozefest.

You gotta admit that Hamilton drove really well today. Fastest lap after fastest lap, amazing consistency.

This race should have been 5 laps longer, it suddenly got VERY exciting at the last lap there.

Shame for Norris. He deserved that driver of the day. Did you see how much his car twitched on every single corner? He would have kept the place if Daniel hadn't pushed him off, and then he lost 3 places instead. Absolute massive unluck.

Such a shame for Lando to lose out today after fighting so hard to hold on. I was really happy to see McLaren perform well though, hopefully them and Renault can step up and bridge the gap to the top three teams. The B teams like Haas and Toro Rosso will never be able to do that.
Looked extremely easy today for Lewis, has he broken Bottas? We will see in Austria which is probably Bottas' best track.

Excuse me, WTF are you doing Ferrrai? Q3 and both cars with issues. Problems solved hopefully for Leclerc. Vettel OUT

Whiny Hamilton as usual with Crofty busy defending him as usual

Leclerc POLE! Pity for Bottas getting screwed by his own teammates so many times during Quali

E: Hamilton gets 3 place grid penalty for impeding Kimi during Q1

We finally appear to have an actual race on our hands. It sounds like Ferrari's decision to change their setup philosophy to be higher downforce has paid off, at least at this track. They suddenly seem to be at or above Mercedes' level. It's not like Canada where Vettel was ahead but it was easy to tell that the Mercedes was faster through most of the track other than straights. The Ferrari car appears to be genuinely faster on both straights and corners than Mercedes this weekend.

Not to mention Red Bull is slowly but surely catching back up. They were clearly behind at the start of the year, and now they're getting to be roughly on the level of Ferrari and Mercedes. Well, at least one of the Red Bulls. Gasly has some serious work to do. He made a big mistake in Q3. Norris out-qualified him in a slower McLaren. Again. Even Christian Horner has been starting to voice his displeasure at Gasly's performances.

Gasly might get one more year at Red Bull, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they replaced him with Albon at some point. Albon was supposed to be a seat-filler and he has ended up being one of the breakout drivers of the season so far. He's doing better than Kvyat and Franz Tost has been talking him up a ton.

Don't forget another issue here is the extreme heat which plays havoc on cars too which is the reason for a slower Mercedes, they have notoriously had issues with extreme heat which we have in Europe for this weekend.

Hamilton grid penalty makes sense, glad they are keeping the same rules for everyone but being so far ahead of Vettel still it should be a fun race.
