Yeah what can i say, premier league players confirmed how stupid they are by voting Pogba into team of the year. Can't wait to see a proper one from the Football writers association or even Sky Sports pundit one lol.

The last page has showed me why on earth has Modric won the award last year. Oh you people….Lets give it to Sterling this year so that it ends once and for all. The little credibility it had ended last year so giving it to Sterling this year would be the final nail in the coffin.

You say that as if Sterling wasn't playing insanely well over the whole year so far

I am little confused, Sterling was pretty much just as good and just as productive last year as he was this year. Hes played /will end up playing this season more so naturally his production will rise to match that but its not a monumental rise or anything since hes maintained an already excellent level.

Why everyone creaming now and not last year? I dont remember Ballon D'or talks last year even though he was just as good

hm I think his performance has looked more impressive even if his stats are the same. But more importantly I think last season KDB was seen as the best offensive player for city, and there was some talk of ballon d'or for KDB.

I also think Pandemona makes the hype seem bigger than it is. Nations league is like confederations cup at most, winning that is fairly irrelevant. And Messi has been fantastic this season. I mean if City had won CL with Sterling hattricking the final or whatever, sure, he's a candidate, but now, he is at best making a domestic sweep, and PL players don't even think he's been the #1 player in the league.

I guess it's possible to argue that the competition this year isn't as good. The whole Real Madrid is slumping and Ronaldo couldn't carry Juventus against Ajax. That leaves quite a bit of hype that isn't defaulted to the usual suspects.

If the Ballon d'Or is truly given to the best football player, Messi would've won 10 times in a row. But I guess that would've been boring. Fluking a bunch of Champions Leagues in a row is apparently more important than consistently being amazing the year throughout. People seem to think it's normal for Messi nowadays to provide 50 goals and a whole bunch of assists a year so he has to do something extraordinary (like winning a treble) to even be considered for the Ballon d'Or according to some. I guess winning the double in Spain almost on his own the past couple of years isn't achievement enough.

No-one comes close to these kinds of numbers except for the prolific goal scorer Ronaldo. And it doesn't even portray the importance on the team. Almost every goal starts with a pre-assist/assist/goal by Messi.

The Sterling campaign drenched with Pandemona bias is hilarious though. It would seem like he's trolling but he's dead serious :D. Sterling haha. While Manchester City is impressive, it isn't because of pure star power but because it's a well drilled, well trained unit. Of course they have good, technical players, but not one that really stands out, except maybe de Bruyne last season. I'd say Hazard should be in contention earlier than Sterling. If Chelsea gets anywhere this season, it's because Hazard carried them there.

We've all become accustomed and spoiled by what Messi and Ronaldo have been showing us in the past decade. Even in bad seasons they're a universe ahead of 'a good player' like Sterling, or Modric for that matter.

Haha yeah Ajax players won't win Ballon d'Or, but if I'd have to choose any Ajax player, it would probably be de Ligt as winner

You know the Ballon d'or isn't given to the guy with the most goals at the end of the year, that is a shit metric to use to regard the best player in the world. If that was the case no one other than striker would win it and that is completely unfair.

Messi has every season scored a bunch of goals IN Spain and helped win the domestic competitions in Spain, not on a European stage or even international stage, that is where he falls short when he doesn't win the Ballon d'or. That is why i throw Sterling in because he is at the forefront of City about to do the domestic treble in England (Which messi has done as well or will do idk) then has a chance to win an international title with the Nations League which is a mini Euros aka best in Europe.

Modric straight up won the Ballon d'or last time based on his amazing season at the forefront of creating goals for Madrid as the won another Champions League and then helped Croatia get to the world cup finals. Messi in that year had like 50 goals scored in La Liga and won the domestic titles only again.

your argument for why sterling or modric deserve the ballon dor is exactly what makes the ballon dor a worthless trophy.
the trophy should go to the best player in that year. youre absolutely right that stats shouldnt be the only metric used when determining the winner. but thats even more of a reason why messi should win. he is just better, simple as that. you can make cases for ronaldo because his goal scoring is just so ruthless that it doesnt matter if messi is undisputedly the most beautiful player to watch, ronaldo's efficiency in front of goal is just as effective at winning you games.
you take ronaldo out of the equation (because so far he hasnt done "enough"), theres only messi left. the results for the other teams and players dont matter. theyre not better than messi. modric winning last year was an absolute joke.
using trophies as a metric imo is worse than simply using individual stats. this isnt the team of the year award, its an individual award. your whole basis for sterling is that hes on route to win the most trophies this year but you are severely underestimating how much his team and his coach has carried him there. a guy who scores 50 goals a season but doesnt win anything despite playing at the top level is more impressive than a guy who played roughly as well as his peers in a fantastic team and won various trophies.

messi wouldn't have won 10 in a row. more like 7-3 or 8-2 for messi against ronaldo. If I only care about UCL performances, I would say 8-2 or 7-3 for ronaldo in the past 10 seasons. these two players are just unreal.

What evilfatsh1t said is pretty much my reaction to your points. Ballon d'Or is an individual prize, not a team prize. I'll add some supposedly unbiased website who scores individual players based on their perfomances stat-wise (and I'm not talking just goals) in games:

https://www.whoscored.com/Players/11119/Show/Lionel-Messi
https://www.whoscored.com/Players/97692/Show/Raheem-Sterling
https://www.whoscored.com/Players/20874/Show/Luka-Modric
https://www.whoscored.com/Players/5583/Show/Cristiano-Ronaldo
https://www.whoscored.com/Players/33404/Show/Eden-Hazard

Sterling surely had a good season comparing to other players, but one clearly stands out in all metrics: Messi. And this has been the case in the past 10 years. Only one to come close is Ronaldo.
I said it last year and I'll say it again; as long as Messi doesn't win the Ballon d'Or (and I realize the year is still long), the whole throphy is not to be taken seriously.

I'll concede to your first sentence.

Yep even among Barça fans it is mostly agreed that 8-2 for Messi against Ronaldo is about right.

Might add to Messi's weaknesses his aerial power and header finishes

Are you guys seriously still hating on modrics win last year? You dont realise how hard it is to reach the world cup finals? Its so impressive even I acknowledged messis achievement in 2014. For me reaching finals with a team not known as one of the big greats is way more impressive than winning titles with barca or real

Btw, how good is that whoscored rating in general? Lots of individual stuff is certainly nice and easy to measure and it does highlight skilled players, but I'd imagine also that for example that playing surefire dull passes all game long could be seen as a great rating booster. Also, for example a good defensive player covering passing angles is pretty damn hard to measure since most of the passes aren't going to happen at all.

No. Croatia had a good team capable of reaching the finals considering:

- All of the competition was in the other half of the bracket. They got to the final winning against Denmark/Russia/England, none of them favourites against Croatie pre-woldcup.
- It's a bo1 knock-out system, with them needing penalty shootouts against Denmark and Russia (where Ballon d'Or winner Modric missed at least 1 penalty)
- The important players on the team (midfield, center backs, basically the spine of their team) consisted of players playing in the top teams in Europe, Modric, Rakitic, Kovacic midfield is amazing.

Their only great match was against Argentina in the group stage, which was a team effort, as was the rest of their World Cup run.

Modric just played to his usual level, and he's a good player. Not the best player in the world by a long shot, so him winning it is a complete joke. Ballon should've went to Messi or Ronaldo as usual and based on individual stats (not just goals/assists but also pass% etc.etc.) Messi should always win Ballon d'Or.

Key passes, chances created etc. is also measured and taken into account. If it was indeed dull passes, defenders would have a very high rating.

Yeah ratings on their are ok but i don't take ratings into account, i like to just look for certain stuff. For a winger i like looking at dribbles, take ons, assists then for someone like Jorginho its pass completion, interceptions etc.

It is a good website same with transfermarket for stats but ratings i still think are to individual to give. Also especially when the likes of the best rated players this season are people like;
Téji Savanier
Sébastien Haller
Alejandro Gómez

I have genuinely never heard of them, i have seen Atalanta which is the club for Gomez have been doing well improving on last year in Serie A and are potentially 4th place challengers but i mean he is rated like 6th best player in the world.... Haller is a Frankfurt player who have been doing well and Savanier plays for "Nimes" in Ligue 1 which i never even heard of as a club before xD These all make up the top 10 rated players in the world.

This is their team of the year;
