I mean great player is a bit of a stretch, he was a good player. He basically falls in the Phil Jagielka tier of England defenders, solid premier league staple kinda guy. Not one who you want if your building a great team but someone who will do a job in a mid tier one. He does have spades of leadership experience which is valuable a every level. Not sure what about his career makes people think he was a great player. None of that has much relevance to how good a manager he is though, in my opinion anyway.

Honestly I wasn't putting much thought into labeling him as a great player (as a player he was certainly never on the same level as Blind), but his coaching is just meh and not the resume of someone you want being in charge of your country. Similar to what we are having here.

Yeah no I didnt mean you specifically. I guess I shouldnt have quoted. As far as managing goes, I dont know the last few years ive gotten the feeling that resumes are over rated in some cases. Then again England manager is a job you are destined to fail at so dono...

Haha yeah especially if you look at United's current state and relatively unknown managers doing really well in Germany. I guess you are right that it won't really matter for England, I can't imagine him doing worse than Hodgson or getting in a bigger scandal than Allerdyce.

I may be underrating Jagielka but my impression is that Southgate was a much better player. Was always one the best defenders in the premiership even though he never went to a big club.

There a reason he left Aston Villa and just ended up going to Middlesborough which was roughly the same level of team. And he was a this peak before the influx of foreigners. When signing foreign defenders became the pervading culture he became irrelevant except for being one of the better players in mid table teams that would win the occasional cup or get a UEFA cup spot. No elite teams wanted a Gareth Southgate and its not like he didnt try, just like no elite teams want a Phil Jagielka or aaaa I dono.. Ryan Shawcross. He was better then they are but he falls in the same tier albiet higher up on it

After Conte implemented 3 man defense he played much more reliable
