Some stats show some less than 40% possession for ManU. Is that actually true?

"That is not enough for a penalty"

One of my most hated phrases in football. Is it a foul or not? If yes, it's a penalty. If no, it's not. Simple as that...

City fans keep booing Milner but he doesn't even celebrate his goal. What a good lad

Overall, City - Pool was thoroughly entertaining. Not necessarily the most calculated winning football, but fast play with great individuals and lots of close calls. One of the better games I've seen this season despite all the easy misses and all that.

Barcelona v Valencia on now. Barca managed to come back and take lead just before half on a Suarez penalty that will make drone unhappy only for Valencia to equalize immediately.

theoretically United has a good chance to make top 3... given how they have two games in hand and City isnt doing very hot lately... that postponed United vs City match will be crucial in my opinion...

How do you feel about the present red card rules inside penalty area? I'm not totally sure how it's handled in different leagues, but I still feel any kind of offense that gets redcarded and gives a penalty is pretty damn harsh. Penalty or red is fine a lot of the time, but both combined is absolutely devastating.

I though there was some change made to the punishment, but it seems red + penalty still happens quite often. Any idea how the interpretation goes right now and whether it's going to change further?

Rule change was that if players make an attempt for the ball but don't get it, it's only a yellow, if there is no chance or attempt to play the ball, holding the opponent or handling the ball are still a straight red.

I like the way it is now, yes a red card still seems harsh but having a defender only get a yellow and the resulting penalty is missed wouldn't seem all that fair either, depending on how exactly the situation was when the foul happened.

This is much more a problem with the red card itself, because a 30th minute red card is much harsher than it is in the 85th. The orange card/10 minute suspension idea is probably the solution to that.

Yeah. I guess part of the problem is also defenders making horrible calls on fouling. Sometimes it's probably better to let the opponent take a shot rather than executing a challenge that's almost a guaranteed red + penalty.

I never found it to harsh. If you make it too lenient players will abuse it. And well if you deny a goal in the 30th minute by fouling then you should get sent off. Nothing should change whether it is the 80th, 30th or 5th minute of the game. But refs will get influenced by that. I keep saying yellow worthy fouls in the first half that never gets ounished because well it is "too early"...

I'm looking at it from a different perspective. To me refereeing is more about making sure the game flows with as less disruption as possible, rather than following the letter of the law to its fullest. So I'm of the opinion that a referee can/should be more/less forgiving with fouls committed at different point during a game, or under different circumstances (i.e is the team leading/trailing .etc). Because factors as such do sometimes contribute to the intention of the player who commits a foul. A foul committed in minute 85th while the team is one goal up is often done to purely disrupt the game and prevent the other team from playing the game rather than just a mere aggression.

In order to do that you'd need refs to be able to look in the player's heads. We already have Oscar-worthy actors on the field who can totally convince the ref. How should they be able to do that?
And because that is impossible I want the rules to be followed to the letter. At the moment we have a situation where teams with dirty players have a huge advantage over teams with managers that want to play a fair game of football.

In a perfect world I'd be totally on your side. But I know people will keep abusing it because they are people

I understand your point but you have to consider the trade off. In order for every call to be made perfectly, the current technology can only accommodate up to video assistance which will only result in a match being broken down to million of pieces, which definitely will destroy the game. Also on the balance of probability, most of the teams/players out there are still doing a decently good job in upholding the rules and sportsmanship. Sure there're a couple of black sheep here and there but I don't believe it's worth disrupting the current system just so we can filter out the few bad ones. Also at the moment we're trying to compensate for the shortfall of in game human errors with post-match review/consideration so that players who abuse the rules are still penalised accordingly. Obviously there are rooms for improvement in that particular front, but nonetheless there're mitigating controls to make sure players can't abuse the rules (so much).

I look at Nigel Owens referee rugby and wish football was like that. Referees need to be more authoritative, players/managers need to behave more maturely.

Total agree. I was watching the match of Arsenal and WestBromwich, a referee Neil Swarbrick had a good match.
As for maturely, I hate the game of Barcelona players. I fan Barcelona, but I think Suares must play more maturely.

I still think post match decisions that don't effect results retrospectively but enforce harsh penalties is the way forward. Maybe we should have fairy of the month. The player found to dive the most each month has to play the next game in a dress.

O.K we can stick to just 1 match bans for players found to be cheating/diving via video evidence.

1 match ban for giving your team a win? 99% of the people in here would do it for their team.
