Apparently Man U offered 50 M€ for Anthony Martial. That seems absurdly high but the journalist is very reliable.

"turned out to be a brilliant move"... Come on. It's penalty shootout. He just got lucky.

Except Jasper looked absolutely horrible in his penalty shootout. If I remember correctly, one of the shots hit him right in the hands and he just wasn't strong enough to keep it out.

Krul was great, don't see how you can knock it when it is unorthodox and so clearly worked.

You clearly overestimate the role of the goalkeeper in the penalty shot. Costa Rica had 3 badly taken penalties and Krul saved 2 of them. On the other hand the dutch players were flawless. The Netherlands had the more skilled shooters and that is why they won.
Van Gaal had one of his weird ideas, it worked out well and its a nice story(maybe we will see a hollywood movie about this, LOL)... In general though, it is not smart idea, especially when you have the better team, to waste your final substitute for the possible shootout.

I don't mean to be insulting in any way, but it's easy to say this when you have zero interaction with Cillessin and the Dutch national team. Maybe Van Gaal knew that Krul had done exhaustive work on learning the penalty tendencies of the Costa Ricans and Cillesin hadn't. Maybe he felt like using his 3rd sub during the game would not have upgraded them at any position at that point in time. It really doesn't matter, because he made a decision that contributed to their reaching the semifinals.

On a side note, during the WC shootout in which the substitution was made and then in the semifinals when Cillessin was left in, one of the main talking points was Cillessin's lack of experience in shootouts. I remember the English commentators talking about that quite a bit.

That said, I didn't see a big difference between Cillessen and Romero in the World Cup (I don't watch Sampdoria at all). Is there one now? I guess they would be fairly even, and be good cover for one another.

ManU always spends so much money but it doesn't seem to work for them at all. Their roster looks so underwhelming to me

just goes to show how hard it is to find a manager who isnt stupid. even with all the resources in the world lvg cant make us play at even half the level fergie did.
the more i watch lvg at man utd the more i come to learn how genius fergie was. back then i thought the squads were still good. now i realise the squads were complete shit compared to now, fergie just made them look good

I know right,

Speaking of PSG, Di Maria looked like a wold beater again. I caught some parts of the game and he even made Cavani look good against one of the tougher fixtures to get in Ligue 1. Happy for him. Not sure what went wrong at United but he is quality.

Van Gaal seems to be great at doing well with talents but not so great at buying. His transfer policy at Man U has been average at best.

Kuba seems to be leaving Dortmund for Fiorentina. Was somewhat expected that he'll leave and I don't think it's the worst decision for both parties regarding their needs and wishes in the moment but as a person he'll be missed like few before. Great guy. If you don't know about his youth you might want to read about it. It's horrible and I couldn't have more respect for him to still stand strong.

Meanwhile lots of fans are starting to panic. Hummels said after yesterday's game that most of the team were done for after an exhausting month with 8 games (and 40°C). The bench does not seem strong enough to replace one of Reus, Mkhi, Kagawa, Auba.

Aww man I love Kuba, and yeah they talked about his background in a piece I saw when he was captaining Euro back in 12' since it was the home team. Apparently his uncle kept him going in the game.

yeah but great managers should be able to bring the best out of even mediocre players.
lvg so far has only gotten fellaini and young to step up. pretty much every other player has been average or hasnt lived up to their potential/known skill. this isnt the majority of the squad going through a period of poor form; it is synonymous with a 'philosophy' that the players cannot identify with. the only players which have are the players who showed significant improvement (fellaini and young). failure to realise this and rectify it shows lvg's inability as a manager (at the very least for man utd)

according to the Guardian, Januzaj will leave Utd for Dortmund on a one season long loan. I think he might become a very good player in Germany under Tuchel considering how Bundesliga is more about tactics than physicality.
