If I remember correctly, one of the shots hit him right in the hands and he just wasn't strong enough to keep it out. Krul was great, don't see how you can knock it when it is unorthodox and so clearly worked.

Costa Rica had 3 badly taken penalties and Krul saved 2 of them. On the other hand the dutch players were flawless. The Netherlands had the more skilled shooters and that is why they won. Van Gaal had one of his weird ideas, it worked out well and its a nice story(maybe we will see a hollywood movie about this, LOL)... In general though, it is not smart idea, especially when you have the better team, to waste your final substitute for the possible shootout.

I don't mean to be insulting in any way, but it's easy to say this when you have zero interaction with Cillessin and the Dutch national team. Maybe Van Gaal knew that Krul had done exhaustive work on learning the penalty tendencies of the Costa Ricans and Cillesin hadn't. Maybe he felt like using his 3rd sub during the game would not have upgraded them at any position at that point in time. It really doesn't matter, because he made a decision that contributed to their reaching the semifinals. On a side note, during the WC shootout in which the substitution was made and then in the semifinals when Cillessin was left in, one of the main talking points was Cillessin's lack of experience in shootouts. I remember the English commentators talking about that quite a bit. That said, I didn't see a big difference between Cillessen and Romero in the World Cup (I don't watch Sampdoria at all). Is there one now? I guess they would be fairly even, and be good cover for one another.

That seems absurdly high but the journalist is very reliable. http://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/mercato-une-offre-mirobolante-de-manchester-united-pour-martial-910882.html (french) ManU always spends so much money but it doesn't seem to work for them at all. Their roster looks so underwhelming to me

I know right, Speaking of PSG, Di Maria looked like a wold beater again. I caught some parts of the game and he even made Cavani look good against one of the tougher fixtures to get in Ligue 1. Happy for him. Not sure what went wrong at United but he is quality.

His transfer policy at Man U has been average at best.

Meanwhile lots of fans are starting to panic. Hummels said after yesterday's game that most of the team were done for after an exhausting month with 8 games (and 40°C). The bench does not seem strong enough to replace one of Reus, Mkhi, Kagawa, Auba.

Was somewhat expected that he'll leave and I don't think it's the worst decision for both parties regarding their needs and wishes in the moment but as a person he'll be missed like few before. Great guy. If you don't know about his youth you might want to read about it. It's horrible and I couldn't have more respect for him to still stand strong. Aww man I love Kuba, and yeah they talked about his background in a piece I saw when he was captaining Euro back in 12' since it was the home team. Apparently his uncle kept him going in the game.
