I think the implication here is that it is highly likely Messi will face stiffer competition at the national level and is less likely to win things with Argentina going forward. That perhaps his best chances to win with Argentina have passed. He had good players available, but never a good team. That imo is the big reason Europe has really surpassed South America for once and for all (team spirit, everyone running to get behind the ball, pressing, less inner-team fighting).
