Not that they'll admit it, but part of the argument is that players for those teams get paid by playoff performance (arguably even Finals performance,) not regular season performance. Obviously they weren't close to top tier players in the Finals and Lebron made the challenge.

If they want to keep playing with him, they have to accept that they're not worth nearly as much as he is (which they weren't.) Relative to him, they're massively overpaid and since he has the power in that situation he can force them into something more in line with him.

I love Meeks. But anything over 4million/yr is a lot for him.

I guess, I mean 5 years of Gortat is a big commitment, but he actually does have some offensive skill. Still, he'll be 35 in the final year of his contract...

Shaun Livingston on the other hand, great move by the Dubs.

Edit: Meeks got a bigger contract than Livingston.

Yeah. people are saying 5/60 is too much but that's about the price decent centers command these days. the only issues with the contract might be the length but I think this is fine for the wizards, they want to get their starting 5 back/keep their core intact and I think this is a good move considering the team.

Wow. Wizards please. Gortat is worth that much? Really? If I was at his size instead of 5'11''-180lbs, I could be earning that much money too. Wow.

He's got skills. He's not a center getting paid cause of his height.

Who on Earth were the Wiz even competing against for Gortat?

I'd heard no rumours about anyone wanting him other than the Wiz. Seems like a horrible overspend. Even if you wanted to lock him in at $12mill a year at least make it three years.

Grunfeld out derping himself as per usual?

Looks like Wade and Bosh are taking serious paycuts. The NBA players union is a joke. If two top-20 players in your association both take 75% of what they're worth in your collectively bargained market, you call their agents and tell them to get the fuck out of town.

I think you don't understand how this works in the NBA vs say MLB.

I'm not quite sure how this works, but according to this, Golden State is now hard capped because of their Shaun Livingston signing.

Doesn't bode well if they are still after Kevin Love.

Gortat at 12 mil/year is good. It's the length of the contract that is odd.

I wouldn't say $12M/yr is good, but it's definitely not surprising considering how much good centers cost these days. Any decent player with PF/C size is going to get $10+M/yr as a matter of course, and Gortat is a proven commodity. It helps that he has great chemistry with Wall and Beal and makes their lives a lot easier on the court, which is obviously a big benefit to WAS.

Agree that the length of the contract is what's concerning. He's 30 now and the contract will end when he's 35, which is old by NBA standards. Hard to believe that they wouldn't have been able to sign him for a year or two less with that much being paid to him each year.

I'll take Jodie Meeks at 3/19 over Avery Bradley at 4/32. :x

And Ben Gordon at 2/19? Wtf Magic.

@Cyric: 12 mil for a guy who isn't a 2 way disaster is solid imo. While Washington is known for screwing up their cap year on end, this is actually a surprisingly good figure for them. I was honestly expecting worse. Of course, the 5 year length could be considered an actual doomsday scenario. I'm guessing there is a team option in the 4th year. Washington (really, Leonsis) has been in "win at all costs" mode for 2 years now. I kinda can't blame him since those old Washington teams were absolute garbage filled with morons.

@Jibba: Jesus. Talking yourself into Jodie Meeks already? RIP.

This must be a hoax btw.

The Cavs, who have the ability to clear as much as $20 million in salary-cap space, are believed to be willing to start a deal at the maximum contract number of about $15 million per season.

The Cavs see Hayward as a compliment to young franchise cornerstones Kyrie Irving and No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins.

This off-season is just going to prove GM is the most undervalued position in sports. Teams should be throwing 10m+ or huge bonuses at good GMs.

I'm happy that Meeks is replacing Stuckey and is not Anthony Morrow. That's about it. But as bad as his contract is, 32m guaranteed to Bradley is definitely worse.

Okay, I'm definitely talking myself into Meeks. But look at his Synergy stats post All Star break last year!

No one who's actually worth the max would go to Cleveland so they have to overpay players not worth the max to upgrade their roster, and there's a very slim chance Hayward might actually improve enough to be worth the max, so he looks like the best Cleveland can get. The Bradley deal seems pretty fair, he's become a two way player last season and is all upside. Not gonna find many better combo guards paid less money.

Cleveland has enough wing players though. They've drafted four first rounders in the last few years (Wiggins, Bennet, Waiters, Irving) and now paying Gordon would be costly. Just keep the cheap guys since I doubt Hayward is going to improve them that much. Get a big guy since Varajeo is losing effectiveness and Thompson isn't good enough yet to protect the rim consistently.

Hayward's max is different from Lebron's Max is different from... etc. You get the idea.

Hayward @ 15ish a year isn't outrageous if you believe that his slump was brought on by having to carry an awful jazz team (and take/miss awful shots) that didn't give a shit. And Zulu's point about the Cleveland overpay is valid as well.

Meeks will at least help Detroit's desperate need for spacing as he can actually shoot. Probably a bit of an overpay but 3years isn't endless and it's not like he's too old to learn to be a semi-competent team defender.
