When you have an average of 2.3 goals scored per game, (world cup,) you have a high majority of games that end with one bad call or no call, which results in a free kick. So all that effort 90+ mins goes to waste because of a questionable call. I mean hell, the first game of this world cup was decided by a brazil player diving. Imagine if Basketball at the end of a tie was decided by whoever couldnt make the next free throw loses. And perhaps the worst part of football is their is no coaching during the game, besides calling a sub, you have 15 minutes during half time to go over things. American Football the coach is probably the single biggest factor besides having a great QB. There are no plays in soccer other than positional battles. Basketball has 200+ plays, soccer has "give and go"? Free kick and Corners? Football is amazing because it has basically zero commercials and is by far imo the best sport for schools. But MLS and Premiere is so boring, remove offsides and you have a better game.

"no coaching during the game" yea... what is he thinking the guys on the sidelines are doing? A dance to summon the demons from guardiolahell?

Its almost like people who post in the football thread like football. Who would have known.
I have pretty negative opinions about Baseball and American Footbal and it probably wouldn't be to popular if I was to go and seek out a forum to express them on. Hating and trolling is just not useful. Enjoy what you enjoy.

Taking the devil's advocate role here. I think there is some truth to the common american criticism of soccerball in that very often games go for very long periods of time where nothing exciting happens. In all american sports the attacking-cycles-with-a-clear-chance-of-scoring are short and there are many of them each game, so throughout a game you're constantlywitnessing something potentially exciting happening. That's perhaps less true of basketball, where games are often either a blow-out (boring start to finish) or they don't matter until the final quarter which is when things get decisive. American sports had to compete for audiences so they had to invent themselves as a show.
European soccerball has been the king for 70+ years and did not have to do much to keep audiences entertained - I think that most fans in Europe support teams out of tribal-identityism rather than out of a true appreciation for the sport. American fans probably enjoy the sport more than they are fanatical for their local teams.
That's the way the game is and given its success, it's difficult to say that it should be any other way. Regarding offsides, if you change the rule then the tactics would adapt - defenders would play deeper and long balls into the area might become the norm. I'm afraid the result would likely not be pretty. It would be fun to see a tournament between top teams with top managers try out playing without the offside rule though.

I think the major difference between American Sports and Football is that in Basketball or Handegg you need a shorter attention span. In a close game you have the snap, 5 seconds of action and a 30 second break every time so you dont have to pay attention like in "Soccer" were everything can happen everytime.
On offside i think in the flow of the game it woulnd be too bad to erase it, it would limit some options defensively (no tici taka) but teams could adapt. The real problem would be free kick crosses from around the box. They are already hard to defend if executed well but with no offside the offense could spread out like crazy creating pick plays and 1v1 all over the place.

I really don’t think the offside rule needs changing its there for a good reason. What mustn’t happen though is for us to have games like Italy Vs Costa Rica where the linesman from Chile seemed to just put his flag up every time. To me the linesman should only intervene if he’s 100% sure it is definitely offside. If it’s a marginal call or the linesman’s not quite sure they should be taught to not flag. It really would ruin the game if every single time a ball is played its offside. That game was getting a bit like that (although Italy where actually offside a few of those times which didn’t help)

It will be hard to have a sensible discussion on this subject as it as very largely subjective and opinion rather than anything actually factual or provable. Everyone likes different things and mostly people like what they grow up liking.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Football. We’ve had one of the most entertaining seasons for a long-time this season (and by that I’m not implying it was boring in previous years, because it wasn’t) in the Premier League and La Liga and the World Cup has been amazing so far (even as an England fan) with only the occasional dud game, Greece, Korea, Russia and Iran I am looking at you. (Most of those dud games come from countries that just don’t have the talent this time round to play any more exciting football so you can hardly blame them.)
I used to have an American friend who tried to get me into American Football and he often touted the American Football is only not popular globally because it cost too much argument. There must be some element of truth in this as to play it properly and form a league system there is a lot of equipment and expense involved. But I couldn't help whilst trying to get into it think that I just find it too boring. They seem to go for 10 seconds before someone else grabs the ball and then everything just stops for another 5 minute advert break. You really need a good book and to regually mute the TV for the adverts if you want to enjoy American Football. Just imagine if you broke Rugby up every time possession turned over, it would be dire.
It almost seems to me that Americans prefer to have a 10 second burst of sport and then to talk about it for hours rather than to have flowing sport over a longer period. This might just be a fundamental difference In European and American sport. But I really don’t think we need to change the vey successful formula of Football to try and cater for an American audiance. If some of them want to get into it and join the Football band wagon then great. If some want to stay watching American sport well that doesn’t harm anyone either does it.

No offside would destroy the game. It's not even worthy of discussion.

I'm with GregJ, why should we change our sport to cater to those not interested in it to begin with? This has been the best world cup since 1998 and people still find things to complain about. Besides as a striker I love the offside rule, nothing better than to lull the defense in a sense of security only to pop out of nowhere because one person forgot to step up.

I enjoy watching NFL a lot but i rarely do it live. Their online pass cuts out almost all of the commercials which boosts the viewing experience a lot.

We should totally destroy the offside rule just so it doesn't interrupt the game flow all the time. Say you can stand offside but a goal only counts if you pass atleast twice before scoring or after a period of 45 seconds has passed.

Football fans: The kind of people with no girlfriends because they all broke up after the try to explain that rule.

1998? More like forever.

I don't get how people who play football can talk about taking away the offside rule.
|
When I was a kid we played always without offside in my neighbourhood. It was so lame. The fordward was near the enemy goalkeeper all the match.
|
I'm mixed about offside. The purpose of the rule, to not have a single striker near the GK all the time, is definitely accomplished. But the offside trap and the interruptions I could do without. But the problem with changing it is that the new rule should be simpler than the current one for it to work. And I don't see a solution for that.

lol no offsides...ya that's brilliant. With goals that big and people only cherrypicking = lame ass game = basketball
