I guess I basically definitely can't picture barcelona or real madrid losing quarter or semi finals vs anyone but barcelona bayern or real madrid. Did you see them losing 2-0 to Milan, T he Bayern Arsenal game was so shit. Arsenal werent really that good, they were clinical to some degree but they didnt play amazing, Bayern will want to forget this one fast. It really just takes an off day to put a weaker team than you ahead in a tie, then they just have to hold on. I think Juve and Dortmund have some chops to be honest. Ive seen a fair bit of Juve this year and they dont have some of the brilliance the Juve a decade ago had but they are incredibly solid. Dortmund is a bit of a lottery. The other teams I wouldnt give to many creds, but that would mostly because i havent seen much of them.

I would be pleased to see either them or Dortmund get into the final. I have a sneaky suspicion Real will win it, and Jose will turn out to have already contracted to leave...ie what happened in Inter! im hoping for a real - bvb semifinals. their group matches were so intense. then the winner of that in the finals against bayern. btw guess who only conceded 10 goals in their league all season long? correct, bayern munich. the same time that conceded 2 at home against an arsenal that wasnt even having a great night. the same bayern munich that played like total shit and almost gave away an unlosable advantage tonight. as barca's fail at milan and bayerns fail tonight have shown, every team can get eliminated or be on the brink of elimination if they have just one single bad night. imho a lot will depend on the pairings. as liquid'drone said, if the "weaker" teams all cluster up on one side of the bracket, while the "stronger" teams have to eliminate each other on the other side, then it can easily come down to one single game/night. my bet for the semifinals is real - bayern (because we havent had enough of that in EC history...) and bvb - barca. but juve and psg are also strong sides that shouldnt be underestimated. gala and malaga wont survive the quarters unless they play each other.

People said they didn't have a chance in the 2nd leg because they went 0-2 in the first leg while away. That's different than saying that they have no chance in the next leg because that performance happened.

This is football we are talking, and maybe PSG or Malaga could give us a nice surprise. I could see maybe PSG doing it, but not Malaga. Chelsea were underdogs, but they weren't some 20 million pound team, they had world class players at nearly every position. Drogba and Cech went god mode on their run, and they had quite a few great players, like Mata, Lampard, and Cole. PSG at least has Zlatan, Lavezzi, etc. Edit: No disrespect to Malaga. It's quite impressive that they are in the quarterfinals and they obviously have several quality players to get this far. I just don't know anyone on their team except Isco. I should really pay more attention to La Liga.

Wow, that reflects the dangerous development the EPL is going through. If they don't pay attention they will fall behind

If they don't pay attention they will fall behind Don't think it's quite that bad ![]() Chelsea were unlucky not to qualify for the last 16 with their points total, many other group runners up and even some winners of groups didn't have the points tally we had (11) Man Utd were unlucky vs Real Madrid too and well Arsenal reserves last night showed their better than the first team xD The only winners this season in the champions league in terms of points are; Spain Turkey Spain due to having 3 teams in the last 8 for the first time since 2002-2003 season. and Turkey for having their team in the knock out stages for 11 years! (back in 2001-2002 Galatasaray got the round 2 group phase of the champions league) They are the only winners with points this round as it is normally 1 German team, 1 italian, 2 Spanish 1 French team that always make up the last 8 and normally an English team. The other 2 countries are either another English/German or a few teams that do well for that one season. Or even Porto/Benfica

They do deserve another whack at the big prize methinks. Maybe Bayern v Real. On March 14 2013 20:42 MapleLeafSirup wrote: No premier league club in the quarters? That's the new deal for all the TV rights. 3,000,000,000 million pounds. POUNDS. Sterling!!! Regardless of how shite some of the teams are performing in Europe, when the clubs are able to really open up their budgets to unprecedented levels we will see what becomes of the EPL > ![]()

I think real right now is significantly better than they were during group stage, barcelona is looking stellar, and yesterday's game was one of the only off-days bayern has had all season. luck is a huge factor, absolutely. but especially the two spanish teams are looking really dominant.

MONEY MONEY MONEY. It is getting out of hand. Some teams just let themselves get overtaken by a rich sheikh who just spills around his money like he wants to. Where is the heart and the soul of these teams? How can you as a fan identify with your favorite club if it is not the club anymore but just some rich guy who likes to play around a little bit? And then he just buys mercenaries from abroad who are supposed to bring him the success ASAP but don't really give a damn about their team. And if it is not working, their obvious solution is just even more money. Look at the teams like Barcelona, Bayern, Dortmund .... a lot of their players are homegrown players who identify with their city and their team and are willing to stay their whole career. These teams rise up their own talents and some of them make it into the first team where they are motivated on a completely different level than mercenaries who switch their team every 2 years anyways. On a sidenote, the English national team is also suffering a lot from their teams preferring exepensive players from abroad over own talents.

People enjoy watching the best players, and they enjoy following epic rivalries. It's only possible to have the best players when you have a lot of money. Hence, the ideal scenario for football as a sport is to have a lot of money concentrated in one or two leagues, ie. La Liga and the Premiership. And still, I think it's a major waste of talent to have Messi and Ronaldo play against crappy spanish teams in over 50% of their games. No one watches the french or german leagues outside of the respective countries because there's not enough money in those leagues, too many crappy teams, and they're too competitive. Yes, competition is bad. Fans like to follow winners, and they can't be changing teams every other year. Having around 4 clubs that can compete for the title every year is probably the best scenario. Having just one is a borefest. Having 8-10 different teams competing to win the championship every year is a mess.
