Jerk is different. You can get away with cleaning/snatching barefoot (although not recommended) but the fact that you are moving your feet forward/backward (at least in a split jerk) means they are pretty necessary. The clean will feel even better when you use oly shoes.

I'd try with heavier weights, just to weigh the bar down a little. I started with 95 and it was comfortable for me. Something not heavy (i.e. very low risk of injuries) but heavy enough for me to get a feel of what clean's all about.

I am by no means a clean expert and my own form is horrible in the clean, but it seems like he should focus on getting elbows up and under the bar faster. The videos on californiastrength describes it pretty well.

Yes, do not jump!!!

bring the bar into your hips, then drive your hips and drop!

Thanks for the videos.

In the second video he teaches "sweeping" the bar, this is not what is taught in the californiastrength videos (atleast I am pretty sure it is not). Is this another thing where you just go by feel?

no california strength advocates it. Always keep the bar close to your body.

I feel pretty good about my snatch. I feel like it gets away from me at times a bit but I'm fairly consistent at it. But my clean is bothering me to hell and back. Once i get to my second pull it swings away from me and despite the fact I'm getting it in the slot, it's crashing on me much more than I used to even though i'm pulling better and it causing me to lose my bounce out of the catch and raping my collar bone. as can be seen here:

I'm not sure what to do to keep myself from pulling so much and swing back away from the bar as opposed to pulling myself under it. Considering completely resetting my clean for a while and replacing strength training with heavy squats/rack jerks/snatches. I hope I can get to my coaches gym for a day or two this week and getting something more helpful than "relax" and "more feet"

high block or high hang cleans! These would force you to pull quicker and get under the bar faster. These always helped me to minimize swinging of the bar. Which reminds me I need to do this a lot more.

This thread motivated me to start doing olympic weight lifting :D. Can't wait to start tomorrow, I've been only doing powerlifting type weightlifting, but am now glad to have something else as well to mix it up.

I'm a scrawny little guy, and I don't care much for bodybuilding or weightlifting, but these lifts are damn impressive, and the amount of hard work and drive that goes into one ~10 second moment is really inspirational

You dont need to be big to be good at oly lifting! It's all about technique, coordination, speed, and flexibility.

So I have been cleaning for years now, and I thought I would have my first crack at CJ. I got up 60kgs (at 70 BW) which was kinda fun for a first time effort.

Having a go at some snatches just with the bar and I think my shoulder flexibility is really really poor for this Also my elbows don't lock out at all (stuck at about 5 degrees flexion). I am doing pec stretches a lot but I cannot get into position for an overhead squat at all it seems.

Re-learning my entire second pull on clean/snatch. Doing a better job of not over extending and instead getting under the bar faster. Also learning to bend my arms after i finish my second pull to keep the bar closer and get under faster. helping a lot because the bar doesnt loop away from me as much.

@dimsum -
ever thought about changing your jerk to look more like this instead of popping out your feet super wide?

I have been trying to move my feet in on the jerk, If I need to squat jerk I will.

Also I have been trying to fix my swinging too. My coach putting in more high pulls which helps.

Also check out this program: http://assets.teamusa.org/assets/documents/attached_file/filename1/52336/Zygmunt_training_upload.pdf

I copied it and sent it to some of the guys I coach. I like it a lot since you can work on different areas of the lift.

How often did you guys stretch to achieve the flexiblity you are at now? I spend around 30 minutes, sometimes more, stretching every day and I still have significant "buttwink" (posterior pelvic tilt would be the correct term I guess) in the bottom of the squat and front squat position.

And that blog was really good Catch, thanks for posting!
