I use mapmyride.com for a ballpark and I know when time I start my runs and when I finish them. I also measure out all of my courses by biking them with a GPS first, after I plot it on mapmyride, so I can estimate milage with relative accuracy.
More importantly, what are badger miles?

Someone who actually runs them will probably jump in and correct me, but I believe running badger miles means going out and just tracking time and assuming you run seven minutes a mile. When filling in your log, you just divide the run in minutes by seven to get the mileage. So, if you ran for an hour, you'd put 8.5 miles in your log.
The idea originated from the University of Wisconsin, the mascot of which is a badger. Hence the name. The Wisconsin runners would generally run faster than 7 min/mile in training, so their actual mileage would exceed what they put in their logs. This is thought to fool the brain into thinking the body is worker less than it actually is.

After today I think I'm done doing 30 minutes at 5.8 mph. Next time I'm going to do 30 minutes at 6mph. This is about .1 miles short of a 5k in 30 minutes! I think it will be a good accomplishment. I'm going to want to check my 1.5 mile time soon as well.

No worse than 13, probably closer to to 12.

No worse than 13, probably closer to to 12. For the 1.5 mile run, a 'satisfactory' for my age is 14 minutes, whereas the next level up, 'good,' is 12:53. 12:53 is just about a 7mph pace (about an 8:35 mile). I will try it on the treadmill, and then on the track next time I am there.
For reference, the next level up is "excellent" which is 10:52, or an 8.3 mph pace (~7:15 mile). This is well outside of my reach right now.

I set the treadmill for 7 mph and completed 1.5 miles in 12:53! According to the PRT, my running performance is now 'good'! It was pretty tough though, so I don't see myself doing better than this for a while.

Nice work buddy! Seems like just a few weeks ago you were worried if you would ever get faster

I'm going to be honest. If I didn't have a gym routine where 4-5 times a week I go to the gym, run on the treadmill, do my strength training, then go home and have a protein shake, all in lieu of a job or any major responsibilities this summer, I would not have made this progress. I'm in the best shape of my life, and this is the only reason why. One major change to my life/schedule and the house of cards comes tumbling down.

That is fucking hysterical, and awesome.

I also read some speculation, that if you take a step farther, it's also a way to get you to ultimately slow down and actually recover.
If you have no option to log it as time / 7, then why run faster? You aren't getting credit for the miles.

I can't run badger miles yet D:
I tried running a mile today since I was short on time... 8 minutes. Still better than I could do before.

8:00? If so you can do 12:20 or so 1.5 mile

I would think you would slow down the pace a bit more to increase your distance 50% from 1 mile to 1.5 miles. I did do about 12:50, but 30 seconds seems like a pretty big jump right now.

Yea, there isn't that significant of a slowdown between 1 and 1.5 miles. In fact, the WR for 2 miles is run at 94% of the pace of the WR in the mile, so that doubling of distance results in only a 6% loss of speed.
Even more astonishing to me is that the slowdown to double from 5000m to 10000m is a mere 4.5%.

World champs this weekend! I'm keenly interested to see how the 5,000, 10,000 and marathon play out. In the first two, the favourite has gotta be Farah, but the irrational part of my brain, which is quite large, is cheering hopelessly for Bekele. Kawauchi is my man in the marathon.
Anyone else excited or interested? Anyone have a good way of watching the thing on friggin' Moscow time?
|
Yea, it would be pretty hopeless for Bekele...as he isnt there
Ethiopian Federation did some wierd shit, initially saying pre classic was selection, which Kennster won. Then they decided to go by time, and he never really got s good race and basically raced once or twice a week I into the ground. Kenya and Ethiopia have very fucked up federations/selection processes.

I did my first run on pavement today. I used runningmap.com to figure out some simple routes in my neighborhood that are nice distances (one loop is 1.5 miles, another road is 1 mile long, etc). I took it easy and did a 1.3 mile route (don't want to overdo it when starting on pavement).
I can't listen to music because there are too many cars and other obstacles to worry about, but at least there is a breeze unlike running on the treadmill. Eventually I plan to move away from running these carefully measured routes and just run around the neighborhood in general, and maybe seeing how far away I can venture with one continuous run.

He's listed on IAAF's website as a competitor here. I think he might be a backup or an alternate or something.

Correct. He is the alternate. The guys running are Merga, Jeilan (2011 Gold medalist but has been injured till recently), Abera Kuma, and of course the monster himself Dejen Gebremeskel.

Well let's hope Merga or Kuma sprain an ankle or something then.
