Yeah I suggest just youtubing the exercises and going for it, don't put any weight on the bar and just practice the movement a little first. Honestly you aren't going to feel confident in the gym till later, going to be a little awkward unfortunately :D

I still feel awkward when I try something new. Nothing wrong with not instantly getting a movement. There's a reason repetitions and practice are part of lifting

Ok first try was a failure.. I went to this gym where I had one free entrance but I found out only there that it was a "free" gym (meaning no instructor/teacher to follow anybody) .. I don't have a lot of experience so I ended up doing some random exercises copying more or less the other guys there (honestly I did it just because I didn't want to have wasted my time going there..) : I really don't feel confident enough to do the SS exercises by myself for the first time without any guidance.

I guess I will have to find a good gym at least for the first times For this week I think I'll go back to running (the last 34k run before the marathon is this saturday...!)

Just copy some vids and do the lifts. Trial and error it's how you learn on the gym.

I'd strongly advice to avoid PT's and rather look for someone doing the lift you want to learn that looks somewhat competent/similar to the videos you have seen. Lifters inside a gym are the nicest people you will find pretty much anywhere.

Experience is the best teacher. Trial and error ftw. Just get the movements down with super light weight, trust us you'll be fine!

Hi guys! Thanks everybody for the nice advices, I will definitely go back to the gym and try out the exercises by myself (I'm watching several videos) unfortunately I won't be able before next week..
There are still a few points that leave me a bit perplex, for example I don't think I can learn deadlifts (the correct posture and the movements) completely by myself, but probably the best way is to seek for the advice of someone experienced in the gym and then try and try again

Here are some vids that I think do a pretty good job explaining the deadlift and squat:

Squat:

But I do the "olympic squat" shown here, but I like the hybrid as well. I prefer both over the low bar squat:

Sorry if this is not the right place to post this but it is a problem for me and it seems like a question with a simple enough answer that eludes me. Today during a workout in the gym I was approached by a man who straight up told me I smell really bad and it's repugnant. He was being polite about it, but I still felt super ashamed since I never noticed it myself.

I shower once a day and never really had a noticeable problem with my body odor, but the guy said it's been bothering him and some other people he didn't want to mention for some time now. How do I deal with a smell that I can't notice? It really bothers me since I'm fairly insecure about my self (that's the reason why I go to the gym in the first place) and I'm even considering changing the gym because of how ashamed I am.

What kind of deodorant do you use, and do you typically use the same couple gym shirts? I had an issue with antiperspirant deodorant that contains aluminum mixing with the urea that is naturally in sweat making all my gym shirts smell bad even through regular wash. The smell was hardly noticeable to me though, except when the shirt got very sweaty so it might be similar to your situation.

Drinking more water dilutes the urea in sweat, or just switch to a deodorant that is not antiperspirant.

I have no idea what kind of deodorant I'm using, but I'm 100% changing it tomorrow morning. Could be the gym gear too, I'm always cycling 2 shirts and 2 shorts that I wash after the workout.

Try putting sodium bicarbonate on ur armpits when you shower. That's the only way I could get rid of armpit odor.

I'm not trolling, with some google you will find similar experiences.
It's ok to be sweaty and smelly on the gym though.

It should say antiperspirant on it if it is, or it will list aluminium in the ingredients. Antiperspirants make up the majority of the market so just make sure you know what you're getting.

Certain synthetic fiber shirts also don't lose their odour in the wash. But being smelly in a gym should not be that offensive to anyone unless it is really really bad, you should consider the possibility that guy was just being a dick.

I am trying to do some fitness at my house to get in better shape. I don't care about getting bulky I want to tone and be healthy. Does anyone have any good exercise recommendations? I have a exercise mat and ball. If you know of apps or exercise routines that I could use that would be very beneficial!!

edit- not trolling! I am just new to this so thank you for your help^^ If you look at my post history and length of time on TL.net you will see that I am not a troll, just a lurker.

Tomorrow I will try to do these exercises: http://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/kb/recommended_routine I will start off at the bottom of the progression and work my way up. It will take lots of work, but I can't wait to see the results.
If anyone has any serious prayer requests please PM me. Thx.

I am seriously not sure if you are trolling...

If not, please first read the OP of this thread to get a general idea about training, then come back with more specific questions: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/sports/261928-general-training-recommendations

I've been lifting for around 8 years now and I'm happy with the results, but I've never really considered leg work outs. Long story short, when I was around 21, I threw out my back.. and before it could fully recover I some how re-injured it (we're talking from simply bending over to pick something up, and upon straitening up again, severe pain shooting through my back). After a week or two of this I saw a physician who figured out that my left leg is just slightly shorter than my right which was causing issues and lengthening the healing process. Later on I saw another doctor who told me I had a slight curve in my spine, but that it wasn't quite scoliosis.

Ever since that discovery I've steered clear of any leg workouts for fear that I would seriously injure my back and or one of my legs.

Does anyone else here have this problem, or at the very least could anyone suggest simple leg exercises that I could start out with to build strength so I can eventually work up to squats? Everywhere I read, people are always stressing the importance of squats and I figure it's time to give them a shot.

Thanks!

How long ago did you hurt your back? Was it your lower back, off to the side? The leg length thing makes me thing your pelvis/SI joint is out of whack and you could use an adjustment. You probably have very little muscle in your lower body and back from avoiding leg workouts so there's probably not a lot of stability.

Give this a read:

There's no "probably" about it... I have very little muscle in my lower body. The injury was 6 or 7 years ago... hasn't occurred since then as I always stretch my back daily and before exercises.

Now that you got me thinking about it, I don't know exactly which part of my back was injured.. the physician was more concerned with the fact that the injury was taking so long to heal and I don't remember him giving me a straight answer on that... but I do remember it feeling like it was right in the middle of my back.

I read some other articles (and videos) talking about how if you think one leg is shorter than the other, its typically a functional(muscular) issue, rather than a structural(bone-related) issue.

Now this is the thing that threw me off.... when I look in a mirror you can clearly see that one side of my hips is higher than the other. That would automatically lead me to believe that it's a structural issue, but the video I watched said that when your hips are off, more often than not, its muscle related. That, to me, goes against common sense... but I'm not a physician.

I'll try some of these stretches and see if they help anything. Oh and I should mention, I've been wearing an extra sole in my left shoe for a few years now which has never caused me any pain or discomfort what so ever.

Thanks for the response.
