you're talking about a different situation. if someone posts a snatch with a weight that clearly is too light for him (because he snatches the bar overhead way up high and has to artificially go down and squat after it to complete the full range of motion of a complete snatch) then it would obviously be better and more constructive for him to receive critique on his normal snatch workload because technique deteriorates when you're nearing your max.

besides, there is a difference between teaching and giving out a critique. if someone asks for a critique he should have theoretically some kind of a basic form that he can work with and improve on. if he has that, he also should already have some kind of a set workload that he has reached.

about the straps, i don't recall saying that straps protect your wrists.

Basically, strengthen your back particularly around your thoracic/cervical spine and scapulas.

Deadlifts, pullups, rows, and all other types of back work will help.

when im addictive/obsessed with something, i dont feel like i have to pursue the thing because i get less pleasure from it then before and therefore need to do it more - i pursue it because i get an abnormally high amount of pleasure from it. idk how it works but reading that article made me think that someone with less dopamine receptors would mean that they experience more pleasure rather than less, as the receptors antagonise the feeling of pleasure rather than activate it? anyway thats just what ran through my mind (i know it contradicts what he said). i seem to experience sudden powerful waves of excitement and thrill when i think about things like starcraft, alcohol etc - feelings beyond what ive seen most other people experience. the only other person i know to go crazy like me about something is another drug/alcohol abuser (who almost died recently from an OD). idk just rambling. i know all you guys get crazy excited about lifting too :D

OK so I finally found the only common denominator for my splitting headaches while lifting. It is apparently ::dun dun duuun...:: HUMIDITY. A few weeks ago there were a number of sessions where I'd get a baaaaad headache every time I lifted. Like it was really debilitating to the point where I either couldn't finish my workout or had to take a really long break, bump my weights down a bit, and do as much as I could manage.

So today it was humid as shit and during my work sets for squats I started to feel unnaturally light headed again and it took me FOREVER to catch my breathe in between each set because of the heavy air. Damn squats took me like half an hour. But I managed it well and wound up able to finish my whole workout without the actual splitting headache. Just took it slow.

Squats took a lot out of me though because I was trying really hard to concentrate on not getting a headache but at the same time I really wanted to push that weight. Last set probably was the worst looking set I've ever done but finishing that 5th rep felt awesome haha. I think somewhere in there, probably 2nd and 4th reps I almost stalled because I let myself rock way too far forward on the way up, but was able to correct myself before my form fell apart.

i was hesitant about posting a video of mine but no one should ever mention numbers without some kind of proof. so here are some videos of mine:

my latest filmed 5RM squat (from may), 170 kg. current 5RM is 175.

my latest filmed 1RM squat (from march), 182.5 kg. current 1RM unknown.

my latest filmed 5RM bench (from may), 120 kg. failure @ the last rep.

latest filmed 1RM bench (from march), 125 kg. current 1RM unknown.

im hoping to film a 5RM deadlift of 180 tomorrow, we'll see.

It does not matter what the weight is, there is inefficiencies in the technique at that weight he posted. I don't understand the problem, he asked for help and we are giving it to him.

straps are very beneficial for trainees that have exercises that involves heavy abuse of the wrists in multiple sets and repetitions, even at low workloads, such as weightlifters that work on their snatch technique and dont want to overuse and injure their wrists.

I should of guessed you meant hands but I wasn't sure.

Indeed, but they still fall under the category of; "you shouldn't be using them until you can lift some heavy ass weights."

I mean, they're frowned upon if you are deadlifting like 235lbs and use straps all throughout warmups as well as work sets.

Mandatory rule is to hit 320lbs first on deadlift. then it's optional. If you go below 320, you're a little bitch.

Well all I feel about it is that I want to lift heavier weights and I simply can't without straps. I have always had an abnormally weak grip. When I want to do shrugs with le 200lbs there is no way I can do it without straps.

I used to have this problem. Then I spend 2-3 weeks on improving my grip and it hasn't been a problem since.

Can you recommend a le routine sJarl?

Today's workout:
FS to max: 152 (T_T this needs to be much higher)
8 snatch singles @ 80
8 CJ singles @ 100
BS to max: 170 (grr why squat feeling so weak lately, i did 3x5 @ 165 like 3 weeks ago T_T)
Push Press: 3x5 @ 60
Then determine the 15 minute ride home is too long, pick up a half gallon of milk and drink it.
I will get huge or die trying roar.

Suffice to say my traps, legs, and back will all be a bit upset with me tomorrow.
While i was "lawyering" (interning with a fellow rugby player who happens to be a baller ass lawyer) today another attorney told me i looked like an athlete and asked me what sport i played for my college rofl :D First tourney this weekend, i'm going to fucking murder someone. I havent hit anyone in 2-3 weeks and i'm getting restless.

My opinion on straps: Get chalk. Get stronger hands. Fuck straps. (unless you're oly lifting everyday...maybe)

When the doc is talking about parascapular strenthening I'm going to assume he is talking about the rotator cuff muscles. There is plenty of stuff to be found on the internet about different exercises for that region.
---------

Today I learned two things: something is iffy with my squatting form and it is stupid to follow after the bar when you are dropping it after a snatch. Now I've got a broken thumbnail to remind me.

Did countless snatches from my knee (feel comfortable with it that way). Worked up to a pr of 65kg.
@DimSum/other oly expers: form check please?

Then did some back squats, was going to take it easy but oh well.

Squat: 60kg x 10, 80kg x 5, 100kg x 3, 120kg x 3, 140kg x 2, 150kg x 1 and 155kg x 1
As you can see the 140kg x 2 was quite easy:

But then my 155kg...

lol@stubborness...

Did some lying leg raises and a couple of dragonflags to finish things off.

@Cycnus: Nice numbers!

actually that looked pretty decent. The start of the hang was a bit sloppy, but the throw was nice.

This video made me think about my training philosophies, I definitely need to pick up my strength.
I need to deadlift more, there is no reason for me to only pull 145kg when I squat 160 LOL.

Don't you clean like 120 from blocks? That's an outrageous ratio. I can pull around 170-175 without training the lift and I only clean 105. I do back extensions most workouts, and light goodmorning/RDL every time I don't do extensions.

But I guess bodyweight has a lot to do with it, lighter lifters are always more efficient with oly lifts/deadlift ratio; more of their fibers are fast-twitch.

@cygnus-AT Damn you attacked the shit out of that bar in your first video.

Also, decaf you'll fucking love this. I don't know if you remember me talking about playing rugby soon when I meet up with a bunch of my college friends. Anyway, the rest of the story goes something like this....
Bunch of college friends and I are meeting up down the shore (yes, ppl from Jersey do call it that) for a weekend full of bachelor party type activities (friend is getting married in Aug). One of the highlights being a game of rugby on the beach with a roller derby team from Morristown, NJ.

The string pulling and favor-doing that my one friend had to do to pull off getting a whole girls' roller derby team to come play rugby with us at a bachelor party will likely go down as the most epic shit ever. Stay tuned.
