funny question
What's the "healthiest" way to get hammered? Ever so often I have to, so I'm wondering what one should optimally drink

Vodka, soda water and a piece of lime, or lime JUICE not cordial. Make sure to eat beforehand and wait at least 1-2 hours before drinking. Vodka has no calories outside of alcohol, so if you wait a couple of hours your liver is just breaking down alcohol and it doesn't have a backlog of food to process, so nothing gets turned into fat.

JUST DON'T EAT ANYTHING WHILE DRINKING.

I like to check this thread while i'm drinking. To, ya know, be healthy and shit. Okay so i'm a fat slob who got hammered and ate taco bell Maybe light day at the gym and cant wait to go back to my WLC with my snatch and c&j 20kg higher ^_^

I drank 11 ciders and then did a back workout + spin class the next day. My training partner wouldn't let me off ;(.

Damn...that is dedication. Keep that training partner. Stupid college with endless parties...

Hi there fitness people of TL!

My name's Ashley, i'm 20, and I'm wanting to get healthy and get in shape.

I'm extremely self conscious, and don't really want to share things out in public, but I'm looking tips on eating healthier and how to get into healthier habits.

If anyone is willing to talk more about it, I'd be willing to share in private. I'm looking for someone who will really be willing to try and help me out and I guess, coach me online. I'm having a few health problems right now, so I decided I should try and get healthy, incase this is what's partially causing them.

Any tips though would be fantastic! Here's some info

Name: Ashley
Age: 20 || Height: 5'8" || Weight: >_>
Starting Date: 01/10/2010 || Goal Date: 04/10/2010/Forever
Weight goals -- I want to lose at least 20 lbs. I'm not fat, but there is fat where I don't want it.
Training goals -- I'd like to be a bit more flexible, a but more.. healthy. I'd like to be able to run for the bus and not get tired, really.
Nutrition goals -- Getting healthy in general; No more junk foods, fatty foods, so on.
Misc goals -- p_q I want to cosplay.

Anyway, yeah. I'm just starting out, I have the money to spend on new shoes, and starting out.

Hopefully this is enough to get started. Thanks. p_q

Hm, a female. I've never seen one of you venture into this thread.

There is a lot of information in the opening post, and there are links which apply to training for females. In general, training for men is 99% the same as training for women. What works for everyone else here will work for you.

There is a lot of support around these parts for the paleolithic diet, and I think for your goals, it's a home run. Paleo is a diet centered around eating food which was available to us 120,000 years ago, such as meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish.

You may also want to take up barbell weight lifting, as this will help you build muscle (no you won't end up looking like Jay Cutler) as you lose fat.

Same advice I'd give a guy here.

Is anyone focusing on running? I see a lot of weightlifters posting, but I'm not terribly interested in that. I used to be a runner in high school, and I want to get back on my hooves after a long time sedentary.

I'm taking it slow and methodical with the Couch to 5k Program (C25K), specifically using Robert Ullrey's C25K podcasts on my mp3 player.

I'm using this program because of how slowly it ramps up to the 5k. I could probably get myself to running 5k's in 2 weeks (based on how fast it took me in the past), but I'm afraid I won't have the willpower.

I have some rough options in mind for goals to tackle after I finish C25K:

-- 10k, half-marathon, and beyond
-- lift a weight for the first time in my life
-- get back into swimming
-- have a long talk with myself about abandoning vegetarianism

It's likely I'll only pick one of these to focus on at first, but I do understand they complement each other. Is anyone else in the "uninterested in weightlifting" minority? If so, what alternative Health and Fitness 2011 goals are you aiming for?

This is such an awesome idea. I wish I saw this thread in 2010.

Joshua
Age: 26 || Height: 5'10" || Weight: 170 lbs
Starting Date: 01/07/10 || Goal Date: 06/25/10 (my birthday)
Weight goals -- Not sure. I think I'd like to be about 155ish
Training goals -- Train for a 10k. I'm capable of running a 5k now but my time is poor. I also plan to lift 3-4 times a week and bench about 200-215 pounds.
Nutrition goals -- Cut back on restaurant and fast food. I do well for breakfast and lunch but my dinners and weekends are poor. I need to cook healthier and drink less.
Misc goals -- I play basketball twice a week at my gym. I'd also plan to join a tennis club or soccer team and play a few times a week. My sleeping habits suck. I average about 6 hours a night. I need to get the proper amount of sleep. My final goal is to me at work on time. I'm consistantly about 30 minutes late.

I take Spirulina, it does wonders for my energy levels.

Holy shit.. my dad has been talking to me about this stuff for ages telling me what a miracle supplement it is, thing is he's always mention all these new "miracle supps" all the time so i'm having a hard time believing everything he says, but seeing this mentioned by other people means it's gotta be true.

Does it actually work that well? it taste and smell like ass though =/

edit: the spirulina we have is not in tablet form, which makes it a bit hard to down because of the rancid taste...

Yeah the powder stuff is awful. To be honest it's one of those things similar to fish oil, you won't notice the effects as you're taking them, but you'll notice when you stop. Although you'll definitely notice it cleaning out your system :p. It gives you very constant and sustain energy levels so as long as you're not giving yourself massive sugar spikes throughout the day by eating high carb food you don't feel any crashes in energy or mood.

I'm kind of weak in the sense that i easily quit stuff unless there is some kind of instant gratification, which is why i have never given all the different supps out there a fair chance. But seeing as other people have recommend Spirulina now i'm gonna give it a serious try
We make signature, then defense it.

I'm very intrigued by the paleo diet but I'm concerned about something. A popular supporter of the diet posted 5 main problems he's been hearing from paleo converts. I'm mainly concerened with number two. Which is that hypothyroidism seems to manifest itself in some people. My mom has it (caused by graves disease) and so does my sister (though all her t-levels have gone back to normal). So that would be my main concern with switching to a paleo diet. I think I'll consult with my GP, and perhaps look for another GP who is an advocate for this diet before switching.

Thanks for this post. I’ve been on some version of low carb and/or paleo for the past 6 years and I have started experiencing a lot of this. For the first maybe 4 years I felt awesome, but it’s been a slow downhill slide since then culminating in hypothyroidism (with a bunch of other stuff I think is related to it, like digestive issues, menstrual issues, and lethargy). For awhile I thought it was because I wasn’t being strict enough, but weirdly going stricter seemed to make me feel worse and adding exercise to the mix was terrible awful bad.

Going back over some low carb reading materials it seems like low carb is actually responsible for the hypothyroidism. Atkins mentions that LC will inhibit the conversion of T3 to T4, the Eades’s mention it, and Diana Schwarzbein preaches loudly against going too LC for exactly this reason. Schwarzbein says that one of the mechanisms by which this happens is that LC will elevate adrenaline (which is initially why you feel so awesome) but after years of high adrenaline it will suppress thyroid function. Another theory that I think is put forth by Matt Stone is that low carb diets will naturally cause you to reduce your calories, which will have a downregulating effect on your metabolism and slow down your thyroid.

Anyway I don’t know what I’m going to do to fix it yet, but the 3 main sources I’ve read for naturally raising thyroid levels (Enig/Fallon, Schwarzbein, and Matt Stone) all seem to agree somewhat. I’ve distilled it to high fat, moderate carb, lowish protein (like 60/30/10 by calories), coconut products, preformed vitamin A, and more calories. I’ve been doing this halfassedly for a week, but I’m going to try in earnest now and track my progress with my basal temperature. If anyone has any other sources they’d like to share, please let me know. I’d like to read all I can.

Some people don't do well on low carbs... very few percentages.

Paleo is not necessarily low carb though -- if you eat enough fruits and vegetables you can still get a significant amount of carbs.

PaNu in the OP does promote a VLCD though very low carb diet.

Graves is a autoimmune hyperthyroid disorder. If she has that Paleo may cure it.

Ifyou were talking about a hypothyroid it would be hashimoto's.... but that's also autoimmune and may be cured by Paleo too.

Most of the time if you go hypothyroid that's just symptomatic of not eating enough. it's pretty easy to NOT eat a lot on Paleo because meat/fat is pretty satiating. If anything, they would be taking in too few kcals and need to raise it.

I'd need to see what these people were eating to see if there were any deficiencies or too hypocaloric to say paleo causes hypothyroid. That's highly unlikely from my and my friends experiences.

Like rosa said, i'll give you the same advice i'd give any guy looking to get a better, healthier body.
Sign up for a gym. Start doing the compound barbell exercises that can be found in the OP in starting strength (don't be scared, they're great for you and no you won't get "huge"). Cut out the processed foods, grains, etc. Lots of meat and fruits and veggies. Figure out your metabolic rate (plenty of calculators online) and eat 300-500 less calories than your burning. Combined with weightlifting i wouldn't be surprised if you drop 20 pounds in a few months or so.
You can pretty much find everything you need in the OP

...Could I possibly be one of those people?

I keep getting sick on paleo, which doesn't make sense. My vegetable intake is higher than it has ever been before in my life, as I eat avocado, salad, broccoli, and tomato nearly every day.

I don't know if this is a sign that paleo isn't right for me, but yeah.

Guess I'll jump on the bandwagon.

Steve
Age: 20 || Height: 5'11" || Weight: 72-75kg
Starting Date: 10/01/11 || Goal Date: 01//03/11
Weight goals -- 80 kg. I've already got a fairly low bodyfat % (maybe 15-20%). So just need to gain some muscle.
Nutrition goals -- Eat more protein. Eat less carbs. Not eat all the junk food my gf has when i go visit her.
Misc goals -- Get back to running 10km comfortably.

My main goal is to get back in shape for the field hockey season. During highschool I used to train/coach/play up to 5 times a week and I was in unreal shape back then. I've been on a 2 year hiatus from it since going to uni/college and now I want to get back to that level and play again. My technical skills haven't really dropped off at all, I'm simply not fit enough. I figure if I beat myself into the ground for the next two months I should be able to at least hold my own in games.
Only a fool would die laughing. I was a fool.

Otherwise, it's not likely that.

I don't think it's as simple as that. I think paleo might work well for regulating hypothyroidism and specifically hypoglycemia in some sufferers. I've also been following another paleo blogger's progress in dealing with hypothyroidism. She ended up having to take desiccated thyroid medication along with iodine and selenium supplments.

For those concerened or curious with her progress here is a link to her hypothyroidism blogs in chronological order:

It really is an unfortunate disease. When her symptoms were at their worst 10 minutes of light physical activity would kill her and she wouldn't be able to do anything else the entire day. That accompanied with a persistent brain fog, lack of concentration, forgetfulness, mental fatigue must be really difficult to deal with.

Interesting. I don't doubt it's possible... but it seems to be fairly rare.

I highly doubt it directly causes it though, just to make that clear. The diet just seems to trigger it in some people who are at high risk for it or have it already but who show no symptoms of it and have normal TSH levels.

ETA: It's interesting to note that the female blogger also suffered from another thing from that list of paleo diet problems. Under the comments a few girls noted that their periods were irregular and would not show up for extended periods of time; sometimes as long as 14 months! She revealed later on in one of her entries that she missed her period too for I think 8 months.

Really not concerned with missing my period, or the other things on that list like having the runs. Just the hypothyroidism concerns me.

Name : Stiven Pronounced Steven
Age: 19 || Height: 5'11" || Weight: 199lbs
Starting Date: 1/3/11 || Goal Date: 5/25/11
Weight goals -- I want to lose 40lbs, I've always been overweight so I want to get myself to a respectable size by summer.
Training goals -- Well, It's mostly cardio so basically I just want to be able to run 2 miles in 15 minutes. I think that's a good time.
Nutrition goals -- Fruits obviously, and probably add more fiber to my diet. I don't eat too much junk food except pizza, so I want to stop eating that completely.
Misc goals -- My friend passed away a few months ago, which is kind of why I'm trying to get healthier. He just had a bad heart since birth and he blamed caffeine for a lot of it. So I took a vow never to have caffeine, it's been about 8 months since I've had any and I don't plan on going back.

Well, I trust TL enough now that they won't hate on my flabby arms and such. ^_~

But yeah, I was reading over the first post, wanted to see if anyone had more info. (:

Paleolithic, though? Sounds interesting. I'll read more of the thread. Thanks a lot for the reply! ♥

I had hypoparathyroidism when I was younger (strangely enough, I was also never outside in the sun... and the symptoms line up almost entirely with vitamin D deficiency. o_o) But I ended up growing out of that. Hormonal disorders are serious business though, especially if you're still growing. Never something to mess around with.

Continuing to make small, consistent changes to my diet. Dinner is based entirely around Chicken, Salmon (MY FAVORITE =o) or lean beef. It'll be almost always steamed broccoli or corn on the side when I get back to school... just have to put in the time to do some cooking. Eggs for breakfast, every day. I've replaced potato chips and the like with either carrots + salad dressing (I like blue cheese. gotta give in on some things =p) or almonds (delicious). Soda replaced with water or whole milk. When I do eat grains (pasta, bread) it's whole wheat.

Main problem in my diet is that I'm really having trouble cutting out bread in particular. Lunch almost always consists of a sandwich. Especially with the limited time I have in between classes, it's hard to find alternatives.

Ah well. Goals for vacation are going well; appear to be gaining weight, lifts are coming along fine and I'm going to start my second practice at power cleans tomorrow.
