^ Interesting read, but completely dismisses people that train martial arts etc.

That is not to say martial artists don't train their strength…

Wait what?

On a different note: I haven't gone to the gym for a bit. I feel really fucking frustrated at myself. I'm going tomorrow. My nutrition is getting better. Vegetables, some meat and coconut milk in a wok tastes amazing and is healthy! My weight is stagnant for the moment however.

Is brown rice considered something you should avoid or?

Bleh, today's lifts. I'm sick and tired of resetting everything because of illness.

Press: 54kg x 5
Front Squat: 80kg x 5
Dead: 120kg x 5

Everything here was pretty easy, and I know I'll work back up quickly again (to 70kg press, 100kg front squat, 150kg deadlift). The next time I naturally stall (as in, not due to an illness), I'll move on to Madcow's 5x5.

Here's hoping I don't get sick again.

Guys when did this become the "ogle incredible-fit-babes-working-out" thread? I want in.

That said, I've been vegetarian for 2 years, but I'm not every good at it. When I say I'm no good, I don't mean I break down and eat a steak every two months, I mean that I'll eventually run out of good food for a while and just eat empty carbs and high fat foods instead of good stuff. A "good" day in my mind is a healthy breakfast (Protein/fruit shake, or a mostly legume based meal, such as avocado and asparagus on whole wheat toast), as well as mostly legumes, nuts, and tofu/protein supplement for the rest of the day. I work out 4 days a week on the weights, and I run when there's no snow.

I'm 5'9 and 170 pounds. 17.5 yr old male.

Yes and no? The main reasons are moral. Still, it keeps me away from a lot of disgusting foods I would end up eating if I was fine with meat. Wanna expand on some of the reasons you think it's a poor diet? I promise not to get all PETA on you, I'm just interested. Links to articles would be cool too

this morning, first workout in school's gym (or any gym for that matter, all used to be basement before ), got there a tad before 8am. was surprised to see it quite busy (and i'm told it gets completely filled in the afternoon). there's a couple of power racks though so i'm all good.

met a coupla guys who were benching 2 plates + change without much struggle so i guess there are some pretty decent lifters here. saw one of them doing power cleans later on as well. time to get tips from people who know how to lift instead of youtube. woo!

Not Eshlow, but I'll bite.

Vegetarianism mistakes bad for good and good for bad in several cases. Obviously, the green vegetables, fruits, and nuts that you generally have on a vegetarian diet are essential to any diet. However, the soy, legumes, and most of all, grains (yes, even whole grains), should be avoided due to their effect on the body.

Grains have been linked to cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, acne, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and a long list of other terrible diseases. They cause inflammation, and even the so-called good carbohydrates (the polysaccharides) cause insulin spikes which lead to further health and body composition problems. On the note of body composition, carbohydrates in general are the worst of the three (fats, proteins, and carbohydrates) in terms of satisfying your hunger; protein is the most efficient, and fat is second. Therefore, a high carbohydrate diet will lead to constant hunger, while a low carbohydrate diet will lead to long-term satisfaction after a meal.

I can really go on about grains and carbohydrates.

Fats and proteins, on the other hand, have been found to contribute significantly to overall health. They actually help prevent insulin spikes, keep your appetite under control, and help you build essential muscle. You know that steak you cheat with once every couple of months? This craving is your body telling you that you're starving and that you need to eat something with substance.

I've recommended this book a lot here, but Robb Wolf's The Paleo Solution is an excellent book on the subject, and it covers all of the bases we're talking about.

I used to use seatbelts as deadlift straps. They worked fairly well; I used them for their flexibility and thinness. Regular straps never tore up my hands anyway, but these felt smoother to lift with. Might want to give them a try.

Edit: Oh, and the girl only did solo porn, no hardcore stuff... but still good nonetheless. =)

After overhead squatting my thumbs start to tingle, like a "sleeping leg". My thumbs, not the entire hand or all my fingers, only my thumbs. Even hours later, they're still not quite back to normal. It's annoying. Anybody with similar experiences?

all you need is a long piece of cloth for a strap

@shasta, how do you grip the bar in a overhead squat? maybe you position your hand weirdly?

@ RosaParks

Have you heard of The Primal Blueprint? It's basically paleo. It's what I've been trying to follow. www.markdailyapple.com is its website.

It goes along with the idea that grains/legumes/soy isn't ideal for good health. It makes weight loss really easy. It's just really tough eating no grains. But have you heard of this?

Hi all,

Anyone know of a good instructional vid/site for power cleans? From what I've seen so far there seems to be quite a bit of conflicting info regarding technique.

Cheers!

lol got my upper two pulled out in december and that was no problem, was back in the gym the day after. On the other hand I'm getting my lower ones pulled out in less than a week and that is not something I'm looking forward too...

First real badminton practice in ages today...my god my legs are tired. Was great to get back to practice footwork and strokes although it was veeeeery rusty!
