By comparison, Cosby sent me into an existential crisis I still haven't resolved. Which isn't hard because he made a total of about 12 videos in the last year. It's difficult to talk about racism without references to US politics xD

The people running them might be racist and make decisions within the institution based on that, but that's not exactly institutional racism. Institutional racism also isn't a necessarily bad thing, depending on your political ideology, I mean that's what race-based affirmative action is.
I personally find the definition of racism as beliefs about inferiority of people based on their race and/or discriminatory behaviour motivated by race pretty useful. It's actually pretty damn narrow, so that's good, and I think most people could agree with it. you know if the people running institutions are racist, and thus able to control who runs instituions, and thus make sure only other racists get to run the institutions after them, or those under them, I think you'll find that to be institutionalized racism.

The sickest of burns.
USA is a walking talking beacon of racism and hate these days. We had a good thing going for a while. We went to the AA meetings. We admitted we had a problem. We were getting better.
Not anymore.
I'm very sad about JonTron, I liked his videos a lot. I like game grumps a lot too. When I read about it I was like oh they're overreacting Jon probably just said something stupid it's no big deal and then I watched the video and I was like holy shit.
And I agree with Yango, the most jarring part is how Jon, who is not white or American by his own standards, was saying these things from the position of an immigrant.
It's interesting how the YouTubers that we spend so much time listening to, by virtue of their jobs that kind of assign their entire lives to the internet, tend to be so fundamentally clueless about the way the world actually works. There's lots of other examples of that. Even just on game grumps, sometimes Arin will accidentally start talking about world events and I'll just be like holy shit stop talking.
School is a good thing boys. Stay in school.

It is rather funny how "white supremacist" is all the rage now. Wonder how long until people realise we need to stop throwing around words like this for no reason.

While I think they're wrong, I can see how an Iranian immigrant can think those things.
Imagine you have a cushy lifestyle, a house, lots of konatary savings and security. You have everything. Then some group comes in and removes your rights and property and ruins what you have forcing you to flee miles away from home.
Here you have the story of the average Iranian immigrant in the 70s. It's not unfathomable to see why these people would abhor the thought of the people who fucked them before coming and doing it again. Obviously it's a generation removed, but point stands.
Obviously it's fallacious logic mixed with a laclient of compassion / empathy... but it's not stupid and ridiculous. There is a clear root for the hatred to grow from.

I just want to say thanks. I didn't know I could get this high strung until this week, and I am really enjoying this. It helps.

At first I was asking myself "who is this Jim Crow guy? I don't recall reading his name recently", so I looked up the name and, uh... well it speaks for itself.
Also you can always get more high strung phyvo, human psyche is fun!

The problem is this reasoning ignores the fact that the racist subculture he chooses to identify with sees no difference between him and the people he doesn't want to come to the country. "Iranian-American Jon Jafari" is the same to them as all the other Muslims.
A selfish/self-preservation based political stance makes sense--the problem is that an Iranian-American supporting the Alt-Right is exactly the opposite of that.

Yeah that's why it's so amazing.
The idea that Jon doesn't see it that way makes it really clear just how ignorant of the world around him he is.
Shit makes me sad.
Everybody should live in another country at some time in their lives. It prevents these kinds of issues.

I thought the "racist" subculture is much more anti-Islam than specifically anti Arab/Persian. Although maybe I'm perceiving it a bit wrong.

I agree there are lots of holes in the logic. I'm just saying anecdotally that the stance isn't particularly atypical for that group.

You are trying to find reason in the unreasonable. That's looking in the wrong place. It's better and more sensible to look at how someone in such a situation can come to the unreasonable instead.

Had my dog put down today, aggressive cancer, took him over from a couple that didn't have time for a dog and had him 2 years. Might only be 2 years but damn it still hurts. Rest in peace little grey prince.
