Qualifications is good? you could always make it "education and qualifications" or something and combine it since that seems a bit more apt
achievements and accomplishments seem different to qualifications though so you should separate it into relevant parts so that your learning related certifications are in education and qualifications and your accomplishments or achievements are under the relevant thing that you want to talk about
hard to explain with no examples though

This is helpful though.

I've seen you guys talking about that exact shit in here before. I remember talking about martial arts in movies, not about self defense though it's a really interesting point that yeah maybe you can avoid confrontations in people but if you venture into the slightly more dangerous parts of the world you just might encounter dog and he don't give a fuck and you gotta fight, never actually thought about that. I'm like 0% qualified to give you an answer to your question though unfortunately.

martial arts wise I have no idea. I know kickboxing's popular over there but i don't know how good of a self defense thing is. isn't like muy tai big over there too?

It's crazy good (pretty much necessary) knowledge in MMA but I'm not sure how practical it is for self defense.

On June 30 2015 09:20 Ketara wrote:So, here's a fun discussion for you guys. I need some help making a purchasing decision. + Show Spoiler +I've been thinking about taking a self defense class while I'm here in Thailand.
Since I travel a lot, I've repeatedly been alone in a foreign country in rather shady situations.
I've almost been mugged on several occasions, although thankfully I've always been able to realize what's about to happen and get away by jumping on a bus or something. I do realize that if you get robbed, the best "self defense class" is to not be a retard and just give them your money.
But what I'm more looking into is getting the self defense class to prevent against getting attacked by a dog. Because I've been attacked by dogs while travelling before and survived basically by sheer luck. My job in the US also necessitates that I have contact with aggressive dogs now and again.
There's also the story about the monkey, you guys remember that. That happened. I also got in a fistfight in Greece once that was entirely my own fault and ended with me losing nearly immediately.
So, I'm in Thailand for 6 months, that sort of thing is really cheap here, and obviously everybody in this country is Tony Jaa. I've got absolutely no martial arts experience, and have been looking around for a place in town that would give me a basic self defense class over a period of 3-4 months. But I don't really know what I'm looking for.
Is there anybody in TLOT who has experience with this sort of thing, and could tell me what I want or what I should be looking for? Is it a dumb idea?
Do tell. TYTY.
The best self-defenses imo are (1) looking appropriately untargetable for harassment (cool / tough in some contexts, innocent in some, as white as possible when dealing with cops, etc) or (2) being a good actor for various social situations.
These don't help vs dogs but idk if any martial art specializes in that. Dogs aren't too hard to win a fight against (disclaimer: my experiences are only with handling farm animals, which occasionally has let to me fighting other people's dogs because I don't just appease them (I usually bark back, which I don't recommend)) but they're hard not to get cut by (which can easily lead to infections tetanus etc) if you're not wearing long sleeves / jeans.
Here are some general tips against dogs from my experience that have nothing to do with martial arts. Always look for a nearby stick or stick-like thing to use as a weapon, or something you can keep between you and the dog(s) like a bicycle or mailbox (dogs run in straight lines very fast, but can't pivot very quickly so they're not good at chasing around things (jackrabbits often kill dogs in this way)), or if you can't find anything else then some dust or gravel or other small pieces of random crap to throw at them is still helpful. They can't grapple with anything other than their mouth, which is connected to one of the weakest spots on their body (the nose), so if they try to grab you just hit them in the tip of their nose and they'll typically leave (raccoons typically kill/maim dogs in this manner). If you have sleeves and tough pants then their claws aren't likely to cause a deep cut via glancing hits, so you can just wrestle with them and generally either push their head into the ground or choke them out. Wrestling a dog doesn't take too much skill you can basically grab any appendage and just start spinning around and they can't do anything about it. Dogs legs also break easy. Good spots to attack are the nose and the legs. Bad spots to attack are the whole head except for the nose, most of the body, and the neck (dogs tend to have lots of extra fat/skin here because this is where dogs attack each other). If you're ok with fighting dirty ballbusting and eye-poking are easy ways to make a dogs leave (dogs typically stop attacking when severely hurt or maimed). Don't stick your fingers anywhere near the mouth (keep a closed fist if you don't trust yourself to do this).
This probably isn't what you wanted, though.

I'd join but daily input isn't something I can guarantee and the rules sound p.harsh for that.

And as far as rules harshness, this game is going to be more lenient than the rules woudl suggest but yeah I get it.

I'm gonna stream a little Isaac, and then start streaming The Wolf Among Us later tonight. If you don't have stuff to do tomorrow, you should watch Wolf, it's a pretty cool game to stream.

Ok, well, I keep up on LLL so if you'd prefer an experienced player who can probably do every other day at worst over no player then just let me know or keep posting about it in here.
