His role has been substantially expanded, according to Peter Jackson, and his presence in a Dol Guldor LEGO set has lead to speculations that he will be featured in the Gandalf/Dol Guldor storyline. re: Alaric Radagast is never actually in a direct scene in the books/appendixes, but Gandalf, Saruman and the elves talk about him on several occasions. I thought he was portrayed quite well. He's supposed to be pretty batty.

I don't mind them including Legolas, I think that makes some sense. But he should not be a major character, his father should be. Reading your review, I kind of agree with your friend. You have to remember that they are going to be adding everything (and then some probably) that was in the LotR appendixes to link all the movies together. That's why it's going to be 3 movies, this next film will have very little direct Hobbit storyline in it. It's going to be all about Gandalf, the elves and Sauron. All the stuff about Thorin and the white orc is canon, they're just giving the orc way way more screentime than he had in the books where he's mentioned briefly in one appendix. All the stuff with Saruman and Radagast and Galadriel and the Necromancer is also canon. If you're ready for that and you can go with the flow there you should enjoy it, but if you don't want all that expanded extra stuff and fight against it, you're going to have the wrong feeling. Some of the stuff might have been cannon but they did change a lot of stuff in terms of how exactly things happened (which I can't recall atm because I read the book and saw the movie a year ago). The white orc may be cannon but he doesn't show up anywhere in the book's story and (IMO) he detracts from the feeling of adventure. I didn't think the hobbit (movie) was bad and as a fan of old movies I didn't find the pacing that terrible. I didn't even mind them changing how the troll scene works out since not only would the book scene be boring on the screen the replacement very well done. The highlights for me were definitely pre-mines and the riddles in the dark, which were exceptional. However I have a big issue with how Jackson does action scenes. I feel like I'm watching the protagonists in a roller coaster ride so the action loses its meaning. The point where the bridge collapses and they all fell down without a bruise on their body? That pretty much epitomizes it. Movies with realistic action put me far more on edge because if someone gets hit or something bad happens it actually has a meaningful effect on the narrative. The Hobbit had its moments but I think I'm going to avoid the other parts if at all possible. I don't watch that many movies in a year (this year I've watched... one) and I prefer to be sure it's gonna be good. + Show Spoiler + also riding op train, 9-0 with priest success saved the president

It's stylized after Norse stories, which are a lot of the same.

The story isn't about it lol.

It's stylized after Norse stories, which are a lot of the same. There is a huge difference between killing 30 orcs cause you're an awesome swordsman and falling into a rocky crevace with no bruises whatsoever when the laws of physics state they should be bloody corpses on the ground. One is a staple of the mythology of great warriors. The other is a staple of loony toons.

I was just trying to write from the start and run with an idea, but I'm finding it quite difficult. Is it worth it to take time to do worldbuilding and deeper character construction or should I just try to muscle through?
