TLA never bottoms out that far. [plug]I also wrote a long blog post with my feelings about Korra that you can find on TL proper or n3rddimension.com[/plug] There are some flashy moments but got Korra is a moron for 4 seasons. Her main cast are all dumb except Asami. Mako is a completely incompetent fire bender. The adults act like children most of the time. The whole pacing was just iffy. The comic relief scientist was cringey most of the time. How does the guy not get put in prison? The bending was the worst part for me. TLA bending was raw and savage. Korra bending was small and polished. Sorry no the worst part was that they try bring up these big political and social issues but don't take the time or effort to really explore them. I understand it's primarily a kids show but if you going to bring up all these things at least do it properly. TLA felt far more of a personal journey where as Korra tries to do that while still doing the global scale issues so it just flops at doing both.

I did and I just don't understand how can people say that Korra is even close when it comes to pacing, character development, tact of tackling the issues, overall maturity and humour. The only thing that's a clear upgrade for me is animation and build-up of the villains, altough the conclusions weren't satysfying at all. Eeh... Both shows are kid shows. I realize that. And TLA had a great arc in the third season about Aang struggling with taking a life, which I loved. But overall I felt like TLA treated the audience like, well, children. You can be a kid's show and realize that many youth that are watching it are able to understand more than goofy silliness and random humor. I felt like TLA had too many one off sections for my taste on the vein of "If we don't put in a random silly thing, kids will get bored!". That doesn't make it a bad show, but it always just made it feel sorta jarring for me.

That show had those small, subtle mentions of concepts from different philosophies and for the most part dealt with simple and personal issues (why lying is bad for one), but tackled them with a lot of maturity and depth. LoK pretty much just takes those ideas of communism, anarchy and fascism, tries to show things aren't so black&white by showing where they come from and how they hurt some people while helping others, but ultimately resort to portraying their leaders as maniacs who need to be stopped.

Aside from the crazy dude in Season 2 (Unalaq... so forgettable I had to look it up), I think it was less that they were all maniacs, and more that any idea, even ones with a good basis, can turn bad if taken too far. That's not a new concept, and most of the ideas had been played out before in other media, but aside from S2 I didn't think any of the villains felt like just crazy people. They all felt fleshed out enough to have purpose that had been twisted, imo.

They just didn't have a clear narrative they wanted for Korra. They had the random monarchy/anarchy/communism/fascism stuff while didn't really tie together well then they have Korra's personal journey of how not to be an idiot and lastly the whole "life in balance with nature" aspect. If instead of pulling all these concepts throughout the whole show they instead dealt with them some of them fully within 1/2 seasons they could have had a lot stronger narrative throughout the whole show. Instead it's just a jumbled mess. Oh I forget, throw in sexuality there as an afterthought like they did.

Well that's the thing - I really do think that TLA was very good about tackling those personal issues (stuff like lying, egocentricism, revenge, messiah complex, trying to find where you belong) with maturity and depth. Simple, personal stuff, but explores them with due diligence. Whereas LoK throws those big ideas but doesn't do anything interesting with them. Also, sure, I get the idea about extremes Req. But ultimately those movements were all presented as something bad from the beginning and ultimately they were discredited by some mustache-twirling stuff (Amon lying about his past, Kuvira's concentration camps etc.) And yeah lesbians out of nowhere doesn't help Bryke's hack status.

TLA I think did a really great job of being a kids show and an adults show at the same time, and of having good stand alone episodes and mini storylines while also having an overarching narrative to tie everything together. Korra to me felt a lot like it was riding on TLA's laurels and milking its success by just showing snippets of the universe TLA created without making its own story. I loved the first season of Korra, then I was super excited for the second season because I thought it was going to be about the spirit world and mapping that out, but it just went downhill and never recovered. There was a new bad guy every few episodes and a lot of rehashed jokes and themes. It was made well and I enjoyed it, but it just wasn't the show that TLA was.

Was it as good as TLA? No. Did it stay as bad as S2? Not even a little. Do the thing.

I just wasn't hooked on the story like I was with TLA. It felt like a normal kids show where it's just individual episodes and no overarching plot.
