I mean, they were cool, but they were dumb. They showed up out of nowhere, their backstory was hard to believe, Zaheer becoming a great airbender in just a few days was dumb, etc.

There are signs of that happening WAY before that last scene. They're just subtle and oriented around a growing friendship like, you know, real relationships. Edit: Wait, THIRD best relationship. #1 is Zaheer and P'li. #2 is Varruk and Zhu Li. I thought their relationship and friendship was the best by far but Korra hasn't really shown any signs of being anything other than a heterosexual female before that. I don't like them just throwing her sexuality like that in the final credits. Felt cheap. If they maybe established it earlier than had the final moment I'd have no problem with it. The friendship was established and lots of small cute signs of it growing throughout but them being bisexual? That wasn't really shown or dealt with at all. I'd imagine it's incredibly hard for an adult to get accustomed to bending compared to a child that's always had bending.

Tenzin really got the short end of the stick in that show imo. He was a badass, but everyone only ever treated him as the stuck up old codger dude. The guy kept Airbending alive in his father's place! He restarted an entire nation! That's pretty awesome yo.

Part of that could be that people didn't expect brand new Air Benders, and so Zaheer got the element of surprise?

Korra couldn't even use airbending that well at the start. Are they saying is only a mental process? Even then how can he use it so well when he just got it. I don't know that was just so dumb. Then Korra gets PTSD even though she doesn't get it from fighting giant evil spirits that almost kill her. They just didn't plan the show very well. Well, Air Bending is a very spiritual thing itself. It's pretty evident that Zaheer was a pretty spiritually connected dude (his first order of business was all that Guru Laghima stuff), and I think it could be reasonably assumed or accepted that he would have meditated quite a bit in solitary confinement. When suddenly granted Air Bending, he was in a pretty good position to be comfortable with it (at least, that's how I saw it). I won't argue with you that the rate of his expertise was escalated past reason, but I don't find it so far fetched that I can't accept it. And idk, I thought Korra PTSD was a pretty good addition to the story. She lost her past avatar connections in S2 (terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible ), and then had her Avatar state and power severely restricted and threatened by the mercury from Zaheer. For someone who had all bending come super naturally (except Air), having all of that happen took a major toll on her.

They gave him superpowers out of nowhere for no reason. It was not believable. He was a cool bad guy, but the writing was bad. Also yeah I liked the Korra PTSD stuff. The episodes in S4 where she's trying to get her mojo back are pretty good.

Airbending may be very spiritual but there's still a physical component. We see that with the other air benders and the air bending temple training grounds. He should have easily been able to go into the spirit world which we see he is but the actual bending should have been far more difficult and taken far longer to manage. edit: Dam Soniv how didn't it blow your mind? At first I was just angry that it didn't follow on from S2's spirit opening stuff but then when this random dude appears with airbending it was a stab in the eye.

They could have made Zaheer a cool bad guy who didn't have any bending. Make him all nefarious schemes like a Joker-esque character who thinks 5 steps ahead and beats people before the fight starts. He had that vibe going, but that's not what they focused on, they focused on his deus ex machina airbending.

Korra felt like each season they were just going by ear. Even now Arrow is the same. S1/S2 had a coherent plan with their story but now it's just all over the place. How hard is it to just write out the show properly? Considering a lot of TV shows follow that pattern, it seems to be quite difficult.
