Well you're a pleb and thought ASoIaF was well written so...

Pretty much. Uncultured white boy over here.

It just saddens me that they wasted potential that much. TLA felt like it was written from the start or at least had a plan. Korra felt like each season they were just going by ear. Even now Arrow is the same. S1/S2 had a coherent plan with their story but now it's just all over the place. How hard is it to just write out the show properly?

Well...that's probably because Korra was playing it by ear. They didn't know if they would have more than 1 season, and after that, I'm pretty sure it was the same kind of deal.

The thing is you can still have an idea of how your story will go. Look at something like Malazan Book of the Fallen. A lot of the books you could in theory read on their own and still enjoy them without knowing the rest but when you put it all together it becomes an amazing epic. I get shows often don't know if they are getting more seasons but I don't see why that means they should have no real idea how the big moments of the story. That to me just means you don't fill out the inbetween or subtlety of the story.

I don't really see problem with Zaheer. It's heavily implied that he's not only talented but also that he studied airbendending a lot. Plus I imagine he practiced airbending inside his cell before using it on guards. Remember when he and Tenzin where flying up the mountain? Zaheer would jump like a monkey, relying moslty on his muscles and just helping a bit with airbending whereas Tenzin's movement was very fluid and airbending was a natural extension of his body. Shows that one was a trained airbender adn the other talented but unrefined.

good example the connections between those books were so well thought out and rewarding to discover.

Lol. Well I don't think a show would be that good. Look at GoT, the books don't have that much subtlety but whatever they did have HBO completely threw it all out. Malazan has too many small moments or characters that an adaption in todays media would just butcher it. Maybe when Netflix takes over the world we'll get it :D Ending isn't that important I rate, the journey is amazing. I'm more sad about people flocking to the books and then not really staying around to read other great fantasy works(*Cough* Soniv!).

WARNING, the following may contain SPOILERS for TLA and LOK. If you haven't watched it, COUGH COUGH WAVE COUGH COUGH SCIP, you should. It's probably one of the best two Western animated series put out in recent memory, with a colorful cast of characters.

+ Show Spoiler [because i dont want to spoil it for Wa…] +
Anyways, I'm going to have to defend Korra. I love TLA and it's certainly quite close to my heart, but Korra was a fantastic series on its own, though some of the parallels in both are rather obvious (eg. Fire Nation and Imperial Japan reference in TLA, or the Earth Queen as Cixi analogue, the Earth Kingdom Anarchy a reference to the warlord period following the collapse of the Qing, and Kuvira as a blatant Mao reference [they even gave her an obvious Mao-mole]).

That's to be expected; they're both suppose to be kids shows with PG ratings, though Korra was obviously given far less restrictions on that matter, and the villains needed to be apparent and probably abit too cardboard. Hence one-dimensional, powercrazy Firelord, Kuvira creating concentration camps and the like (though I'm not too fond of it being given out of the blue), Unalaq being batshit, etc.

I'm still fond of TLA. It was exceptional in the way it was able to keep the atmosphere humorous and mostly light, when dealing with extremely heavy topics, ranging from genocide (not only of the Air Nomads, but thinking of the Southern Raiders here), to the complexities of war and redemption (most notably thinking about Zuko, + Show Spoiler +
and specifically his chapter saving the Earth village from a bunch of bandits, only for them all to reject and hate him when he revealed his firebending
). And the character development in the series was somewhat deeper (to an extent: Zuko's introduction and slow but steady redemption and development as the secondary protagonist was extremely ell-executed; but the rest of the cast tended to be far more static in their personalities).

If it didn't have PG restrictions and wasn't a movie directed by M. Night Whatatwist Shyamalan, it would likely be too dark and uncomfortable to watch. The implications of many things being...well, rather depressing already. But things tend to be after a 100 year long war that started with the genocide of an entire nation of pacifists.

In Korra, it's similar to TLA. Many of the side characters tend to be much more static in their personalities (Bolin is the comic relief, etc.), but the focus of development is on Korra herself and how she develops and matures throughout the series, and deals with her issues. Especially in Season 4, her condition and PTSD were brilliantly handled. Besides the random Korra/Mako ship that they started the series off with to appease the rabid Zutara fans; but the development of her and Asami's relationship was organic, could be seen developing from mid-season 2 onwards, and also an extremely progressive and well-done ending, overall [trust me, LGBT viewers appreciated how it was treated], i thought they developed her character far more deeply than Aang did (who wasn't an one-dimensional character, but wasn't nearly as complex as Korra turned out to be; Aang always held true to his Air Nomad heritage and teachings throughout). Indeed, while the villains were undoubtedly portrayed as villains, Korra did a much better job making them less mustache-twirlers than did TLA (where firebenders were...yeah),TLA had Azula and Zuko, but most of the antagonist cast in Korra had more developed character and motivations than Ozai's clear case of megalomania and BURN DA WORLD DOWN! syndrome. Amon and Kuvira most notably. Vaatu not so much.

http://www.themarysue.com/the-psychology-of-inspirational-women-korra/

(WARNING, MAJOR SPOILERS FROM THE LINK, OBVIOUSLY)

In fact, Aang and Korra mirror each other extremely well. Aang never wanted to be Avatar, but learned to accept his destiny while staying true to himself as the series progressed (while picking up all the bending elements within a year). Korra always wanted to be Avatar, but had trouble doing so through much of the series and needed to (she couldn't airbend and had trouble attuning with her Avatar spirit/past lives/Spirit World, something Aang never had trouble with). Aang was kind, considerate, and an Air Nomad to the core. Korra...well, the opposite.

Also Ketarah, Harmonic Convergence. Seriously, they needed to reintroduce air bending to the world, and the explanation fit. Did you complain when the Lion Turtles gave people bending? Probably not. If you want to ask me what's the unbelievable part, how the fuck was Kuvira able to get so much fucking platinum to coat and armor a GIANT STEAMPUNK MECHA when it's so goddamn rare a material. But it's not fucking reality, unless you also want to pick on the inconsistencies of bending and HOW CAN PEOPLE CONTROL AIR, WATER, FIRE, AND EARTH, AND ONLY THE AVATAR CAN CONTROL ALL FOUR ELEMENTS?!?!?!?! like, this complaint is so inane.

I'm starting to ramble at this point, but I'll just say I disagree. Both were fantastic series.

Just look at the first moment he gets air bending. He manages to outsmart the guards and fly over. All the other guys that got air bending could barely use it. Korra couldn't even use airbending that well at the start. Are they saying is only a mental process? Even then how can he use it so well when he just got it. I don't know that was just so dumb. Then Korra gets PTSD even though she doesn't get it from fighting giant evil spirits that almost kill her. They just didn't plan the show very well.

Uh, Korra's PTSD was a long time running. The fuck do you think the Lotus' faces turning into her past enemies were references to? Unlike after Vaatu, Korra was literally unable to perform her duties as Avatar, something she had constructed her ENTIRE IDENTITY around, and had her mentor tell her that he and the air nation will take up her task, take as long as you need to recover (unintentionally reinforcing all of her fears, everything her previous antagonists, etc. have been trying to force on her). Vaatu hurt her by completely severing her connection to her past lives, yes; she can no longer call on their wisdom, but she never did that much to begin with. After Zaheer? Yeah, not being able to walk is a pretty big impediment.

The link provides a more detailed analysis of it, but I have no problems with her PTSD depiction.

I have a really awful habit of not finishing things. I haven't actually finished reading ASoIaF book 5. I'm a bit over halfway, I just get distracted.

I really enjoy reading, I'm just bad about keeping up with it. I recently read The Companions: The Sundering to help give myself familiarity with the Forgotten Realms world for one of my D&D campaigns. Really loved it and bought Book 2 shortly after, but have only gotten through a couple chapters cuz I g- OH LOOK. SHINEY!

This is now a somewhat valid statement since face Hunters were finally fucking nerfed...somewhat and Mage is no longer trash-tier (and ranked like 7th-9th in constructed).

Book 5 is awfully boring honestly. When I read it I had trouble finishing it too. Either it's the worst out of the 5 or I just don't enjoy Martin anymore.

I find reading is all about routine. Well non-vacation reading. I tend to just power through books on holiday. Just set up a routine where you read maybe 30 minutes before going to bed to help unwind after being on PC.

Book V was fine, though again GRRM is still in "too many characters/plotlines/Mereenese knots" to untangle by Book IV/V.

Book IV is growing on me. I'm starting to like the look into Cersei's mind.

I did that for a while, and likely will in the future again. But I've recently been watching Applejacked/Ryzen streams when falling asleep.

My habits change a lot.

It's not the fact that he gets airbending that's the problem, that's fine.

The problem is that everybody gets airbending at the same time, but people who have actual teachers are barely able to do anything at the same time that the guy who is locked in a cell by himself quickly becomes the best airbender in the world.

I dunno, I feel like it could have been really cool, but just didn't quite get there, whereas everything in TLA's writing was super solid to me.

1) it was clear that he was going to lose to Tenzin in their 1v1 before it was interrupted.

2) he spent the entire time in prison studying or contemplating Air Nomad teachings, and probably practiced air bending before the guards showed up. Hes stuck in a prison at the top of a mountain, what else is he going to do with his time.
