It's not like I'm that big of an anime fan anyway. My favorite things pretty much fall in line with the typical "omg you're an elitist anime douchebag" persona. lulz

You essentially die the first time you encounter almost any boss, for example ( I'm sure Quelaag was 'easy' for many people but there's no way in hell you don't die to her at least once unless yon summon dat bitch) You die the first time usually because the game is hard, and it's about learning. But look closer at it. If something is "artificial difficulty," then it will have two certain qualities. One, it gives no information beforehand as to what you're facing. Two, it doesn't give you time during the specific event to react in a way that will save you. Looking at Quelaag, does she have moves that you don't know about beforehand, but will still kill you (such as deathfart)? Yes, so she checks out of the first category. But now, looking at number two, does deathfart give you time to react during the attack? Absolutely. It gives you a full three-second warning as she slumps over, clearly telegraphing some sort of outward attack. If one is attentive, then one can dodge it the first time one sees it. That rarely happens, but it is within the hands of the player to make decisions that will save him, and that's whats important. Now if we look at mimics, they fill both categories. They give both no warning and no possible chance to react. If you're a tanky character than you might survive, but squishies get one-shot by something they could not possible expect. The only way to survive thanks to the knowledge that was given to you is to be tanky, and that just comes down to luck as to what you happen to be wearing when you open the chest. Thus, it's artificial difficulty. The sniper is a lesser offender than the mimic, since while it's massively unreasonable to expect, one can identify and neutralize the poison with an item they most likely have. There are other examples too but they're just spoilers. I placed true in quotes because, from my experience, it's amusing how many anime fans go out of their way to show much more of a "true" fan they are than others.
