I don't think it would have been much different either way. No but if WCS 2016 was all about this magic rainbow of getting casual viewers I'd expect to see an uptick in viewership for an all foreign final, not a group of numbers that's down 20% on HSC
This is going to sound like a list of excuses, but whatever.
idk, I think we'll need to see a few tournaments before we say that. We actually had higher viewership yesterday, and time scheduling, has a lot to do with it.
Not to mention this was admitted by Dreamhack, a very rushed event, the earlier parts of the tournament weren't even hype as we didn't even have a stage going into the semifinals.
And another point, which I feel is a huge part, is we're essentially a fresh slate, and the players and the storylines aren't in the public eye yet. A lot of new faces to a lot of casual viewers. Nowhere near the name recognition as legends of the past like Idra or Stephano or the like. And that might take several months to develop. IF that happens.

When was the last time you won $16,000 and earned 1,000 WCS points?

2016 WCS points aren't really comparable to 2013-15 ones, but $16k is good money. It's slightly more than I make in a year, so if I could win one DH yearly, I'd be more than happy

Drogo is the first winner of the Welfare system. Btw, did anyone actually watch this final?

So many post in this thread discussion the viewership numbers.
I have one theory for this. This probably something none has ever thought about. Might go against all of your intuition. But I have triple checked my math, and the numbers add up.
I think. I think the reason why there were so few viewers is because Starcraft two is not a popular game. In fact I would dare to say that the popularity has been decreasing for four years already.
Here is detailed chart of my calculations for you math nerds + Show Spoiler +

This tournament was actually more exciting than I expected.from the lineup Foreigners beating Koreans is a lot more exciting when there's only a few Koreans instead of "Oh he beat 2 Koreans but there's still PartinG on the other side so Korea still wins"
Maybe they should try something like a Korean qualifier for 2-3 players who can compete for trophy/money but no WCS points (though the WCS pt system makes this weird since it denies other players)

My interest in the tournament without Koreans was very very little (and I watch every tournament I can). The level of play was rather low. Grats to Drogo though.

I don't quite understand what you are aiming at , I'm pointing out that winning DH means, in this case, $16,000 in your pocket and 1,000 WCS points in addition, which, in my opinion, should mean quite a lot to any SC2 player out there. However, for someone that regularly wins this kind of money, maybe it does mean nothing. At least in theory. I have yet to hear from someone winning that kind of money / points that it doesn't mean anything. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here.

Not sure if you're purposely baiting or what, but it's pretty obvious that what The_Masked_Shrimp meant was that the competition is so gimped compared to previous events that winning the tournament is less of an accomplishment, from a competitive (not winnings) standpoint, than before.

Did SGTK die? I didn't notice any polls last night and OP still isn't updated.
I went to bed at 3-1, did Drogo take it 4-1?

I don't see the correlation between the system and casuals, casuals wouldn't know/care if it was all foreigner or all Korean, or a mix at this point in the systems existence. The hope appears to be to prop up the scene overall around the world, so that the long term effect is to stabilize the viewership and then slowly increase interest in the game again. The first step to doing that is to try and create a more global following for a variety of players. Then you'll be able to pull viewers from all over that are fans of Koreans, Foreigners, etc. This is the same strategy used by a lot of major and minor league sports to grow their product. Put it this way, the previous system was dying, might as well try something new but to say it somehow failed already(as you are implying) is not only shortsighted but pushing forward a false narrative to prove a point that won't be proven for another few months if not year or two.
The Previous System, namely WCS 2015 was drawing more viewers than this system

He happily posted in the ABL a couple of minutes ago, so there we know something about his priorities.

We need to copy the mafia ban list system and have offenders sit out a specified number of LRs before they are allowed to make one again

No. Throughout SC2's history I've watched most major tournaments I could. This one I had no interest in. Sorry, these players don't put on the caliber of games that I enjoy watching. It's that simple. I'm not trying to be toxic, just truthful.
