I don't think you can call "cannot practice half as much as anyone else due to a broken back and cannot feel his fingers touching the keyboard during games" a slump.

It's unfortunate that Mvp's career was cut short due to health issues and while he will remain the best player in WoL, it definitely has to be Life for all of SC2. It's like the people that argue for older players like Bill Russel in GOAT conversations over Jordan. The level of competition is much more fierce now. We can't just assume that Mvp would have remained as dominant in this era if he didn't have to deal with health issues.
Arguing the GOAT argument based on present times is silly. It's not about "what could you do now?" It's about what you did when you played

Life does have the advantage of starting SC2 significantly younger than Mvp so he has a good shot of passing him. I think the only other major contender other than Life right now is Maru.

I think the main issue here is that mvp was succesful while there were tons of GSL-tournaments a year. Therefore a comparison of pure numbers doesn't really work, imo.

If you can throw season 1 of wcs 2013 out of the window and both gsl finals of 2012 as well OK, but I disagree. He reached heights unimaginable and climbed the craziest mountains. I LOVE Life almost as much as I like AOA or love Bomber, but the feats of Mvp were amazing. Life Is still THE zerg king, while the king of wings and starcraft 2 is Mvp.

I count Flash being out of the second last OSL in Ro4 when he was getting his surgery a slump. It's just reality.

Players are generally compared to their peers/era, same with every sport. Otherwise the greatest players/athletes of the past aren't great at all because they would look like scrubs.
