Life messed up twice on upgrades, attacking just before his +2 attack finished vs 1/1 of Nerchio, and then the second attack, he went just as Nerchio's 2/2 was complete. Life was over eager and also missed the upgrade timings in both attacks. Plus the whole reinforcement distance.
