I think he got beaten badly enough that he was able to absorb his loss. It's a lot harder when you lose a very close match than when you can say, okay my opponent was the better player this time and i need to work on it.

Exactly -- in general, it seems like a terrible idea to build a bunch of slow, expensive units and encourage your terran opponent to build cheap glass cannons that will pick you apart.
Then you have to divide your gas between tempests and HT's, likely skipping the ground upgrades along the way. On the other hand, Innovation had so much gas to spare that he was able to research building armor and missile turret range, and still had a huge bank to fall back on. He can build loads of orbitals and dumps mules over any base that's far from the main protoss army.
