Squirtle put up a great fight, watch game 2 vs Soulkey where he still almost won after getting baneling busted with almost no units and still manages to fight for 20 minutes. Tastosis were pretty much jizzing in their pants over Squirtle. Tastosis: "Can I say that squirtle is the best protoss in the world right now?" Squirtle is good but nowhere near as good as Tastosis thinks. Unfortunately no one seemed to realize he's the hipster pick. If I may just repeat my earlier prediction: On February 08 2013 14:26 Evil_Sheep wrote: Yesterday fan favourite Bomber was picked to advance along with DRG. Today it's Squirtle who's the fan favourite. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Squirtle will be the one not advancing today. It's just that there's a vote for your head and one for your heart but I've noticed people don't seem to use their head for either. As of right now the plurality of TL voters have picked Squirtle and MKP, a protoss and terran, to advance in a group over two zergs, I mean how sentimental can you get? Hate to say I told you so.

He showed up out of no where (copying the ID of the real Boxer), and owned it up with his marine micro and everything. He owned banelings with marines (good marine splits) and took out Fruitdealer (the former GSL Champion of that season, it was season 2) and made it to the finals. It was a good storyline. The real Boxer made it to the semi finals (thus potentially setting up a real Boxer vs fake Boxer finals, the winner gets to keep the name Boxer!!111) but lost to Nestea. Anyway, the fact that MKP showed up out of no where (taking the name of the famous Boxer) and owned up with the Boxer ID made him a memorable player. The good first impression (and the fact that he is still relevant today) makes him a good candidate for a fan favorite. That and he was pretty good too. Making it to three finals within 3-4 months, he became a Kong quite quickly. Though he sort of fell off after that, early 2012 he did make it to 3 MLG finals in a row (facing off against DRG each time and winning 2 of out 3 MLGs). Sadly MKP fell off after and hasn't returned to form lately (though it's hard now that the competition is fiercer than ever). Overall, there's lots of reasons to like MKP but he is sadly losing a lot of what made him really liked in the first place (being a Kong, stealing famous pro gamer names, crying, etc). Despite MKP not doing as well lately, he's been in nearly every Code S and hasn't fallen off yet. So while he's no MVP, he's definitely a player above most others because he at least manages to stay relevant (which is hard to do when the competition is so fierce). He made it to the semi finals of Iron Squid (recently) for example, so it's not just Code S either . At least he still has hip looking glasses.

His response to the unscouted bane bust? His prevention of soulkey from getting a 4rth? Squirtle played effortlessly. And then he got to the last set and he was fucking on pylon timings. He cracked under the pressure.

He may have not realized that it was a baneling bust, but what else did he think all those lings could be for? This is the guy who used to be on the same team with July, Suhosin and Zero by the way. :p

I knew he made a lot of marines and he was good at microing them, but not much else, and I played Protoss back then, so Terran players didn't interest me much. So at the time, I was often looking at the KR GM ladder because it was fun to see who was doing well on there, and I noticed that MKP was #1 with nearly 80% winrate. This was ridiculous, and I tried to understand how he could manage that. On my TW/KR account, I stalked his profile, and looked at his build order. And holy shit, regardless of the matchup, MKP was always doing a different build, most preferably crazy ones (at the time), like gas first against P, 14 CC, mass rax plays, various proxies and 1/1/1, ultra greedy double upgrades buids, mass hellions all-ins, etc... I understood his true strength as a Starcraft player: complete unpredictability, backed up by monster mechanics, mainly unparalleled macro and micro. That's when he won in convincing fashion Arena of Legends vs DRG that I really became a fan, and I instantly switched to Terran. I started to follow his stream, watch any replay, copying his build orders in my build order notebook (:D I basically only do his builds on ladder), modeled my hotkeys after his, modeled my mouse handling after his, modeled my proxy marauders after his (!), etc, etc.. During all the end of 2011, MKP was really good, but still mainly known as an online beast, and not much of a LAN competitor. Then came 2012. That's when all my convictions about MKP realized. He was finally the best player in the world (with DRG), because of all that I had identified as his strengths: unpredictability, killing instinct, monstrous mechanics, innovative high-risk-high-rewards builds, crisis management and game sense in unusual situations, honed by intense laddering. He won several premier tournaments (MLG), some online major ones (like KSL), all-killed a bunch of teams in various teamleagues. He was the complete package, the ultimate player in my eyes. Soon the charm would be broken (mainly thanks to a shift in metagame after the queen patch), and MKP seemed a bit lost, like MMA, because his agressive and unpredictable style had been completely shattered, thanks to the reduction in opening builds viable against Zerg (warranted or not, that's not my point, but it's a fact that it did hurt MKP's play). I still remained an unconditional fan. I'm convinced that all of his strengths are still there, even if it seems to people who don't know MKP that much that he's just greedy and cheesy. Because CC first and proxy raxes are all that's left from his former godly TvZ, I do understand those people. I know that in the current metagame vZ, MKP is not the ultimate player at all. He's risky, overly aggressive, his multitasking sometimes fails him, and he seems only carried by his monstrous macro and micro. That's enough for me. Hell, that's enough for constant GSL Ro16/8 runs. I also think that he's the best TvP player in the world, and at least top 3 TvT in the world as well. At the very least his early game TvT is a thing of beauty, that's where he has the occasion to really showcase all of his strengths. But nowadays, being good vs P and T isn't really as good of an asset, right? *wink*. That's why I'm an MKP fan. I don't care about his persona, the "storylines" and whatnot, the Kong thing, the crying, the "cuteness", the hipster glasses. I mean, it doesn't bother me, but I love MKP for his Starcraft gameplay before all. One thing though. I wish he would scout and scan more sometimes :D
