That's who I'm going with. B4 doesn't really feel like Code S, I've never quite bought the hype around HyuN, and YoDa feels like a beast at the moment. Squirtle's' just plain solid so I'd be surprised if he didn't make it.

I think you should add to the OP that the actual Live-Button on the Gom-Page now links to the Beta-Player (at least it did for today) and that the Link in the OP links to the old Webplayer.
I am not sure. Everybody has a good chance of advancing.
Yoda did decently well in IEM. Squirtle is playing better but not as good as his early last year performance. BB is improving. Hyun is the previous GSL finalist.

True, a lot of the favorites got eliminated really early. Too be honest, HyuN isn't even playing as well as he could, he has been dropping games to some players he really should not lose to, like cYong in the IPL6 qualifiers.

it would not be toooo much of an upset for it to continue for the rest of the groups either. byun/parting, keen/mvp, nestea/taeja and hack/drg could all make it out lol
I'd say Squirtle and Hyun have the best chance of getting out of this one, but if Yoda decides to finally show why MVP calls him the best player in the IM house then he has a great chance too.
I figure although It's not announced yet Hyun is probably joining Azubu, and It's weird that Squirtle hasn't been " posted " to Kespa teams yet like Parting was.

HyuN said in an interview he preferred KeSPA teams rather than foreign or eSF ones. I'm assuming Squirtle is the same because both are former KeSPA players.

I think like a quarter of the HyuN posts are mine haha.
One of the hardest groups to call IMO. HyuN is probably a slight favorite but I do think he's a bit overrated, all 4 players are strong. For some reason I'm feeling Squirtle+YoDa out of this one.

Hyun for sure, don´t know about Squirte and Yoda. Squirte is on the rise again, but may be flustered by his team situation. Yoda, while also on the rise, always struck me as a very unsafe bet, never having a really dominant showing in Korea. So I´ll use the Bisu rule: May the prettier one win. Go Squirtle!
Why does everyone keep hyping YoDa? From what I've seen he's not been that impressive tbh. Hoping HyuN and Squirtle to go through (even though I'm Terran...)

its been a decent time since last code S season so they mightve slumped slightly because of bliz cup inbetween, sniper and hyun were never that great of gsl finalists as well, plus hyun is teamless and sniper had to play 2 ZvTs (not very good at it).

The record of people that get top 4s in the previous GSL season is terrible. Has nothing to do with last season in particular it is just that it is impossible to be consistent in SC2 for more than a month or two unfortunately.

Husky+Day9
Oh, yeah. That's a surprisingly good combo actually. Bitterdam and Tastosis are still the two best casting combo's. Day9 is good with Husky or Biscuit, but they just don't have the chemistry that Bitterdam and Tastosis have.

Already seen all-in beat expand twice, one macro game. I guess it would be like Arkanoid where it goes through multiple phases as ppl figure it out.
The P has to proxy the robo. More active scouting shut down the build really hard, you just bunker rush the robo @Flash mode. But yeah it'll be weird, since those backdoor rocks allow for lots of aggressive strats.

Immortals just good for their price, The only drawback they have that they dont shoot air. But they cost 2 stalker but 1 immo is much better than 2 stalker.

They have 3 drawbacks actually: 1: They don't shoot air, 2: They come out of a robo instead of a gateway so they can't be warped in close to the battle and 3: They don't have blink so they are less mobile than the stalker.

you can't attack a 3basing protoss on CloudKingdom, and even a 4basing P is hard to attack, so all the advantages gathered in the mid game don't matter

You could split your units and use the different paths to flank.

yea that map is terrible for TvP if protoss just plays defensive and then just rolls out with their auto win army
i think yoda was desperately trying to end it before protoss got maxed
3 of 4 colossi where in the red with just shields. it would have taken 2 volleys from that 6 vikings at he beginning of the engagement for everyone of those to fall. instead they are attacking the full healthy one and dying in the process., then beeing to few to kill the remaining. i think this could have turned the fight
Well, EMP landed but not on templar - Storms over the Bio and Vikings, no control on Vikings - The Colossi are alive. This is what I got from the battle but I have to watch it again. With 2 words - Squirtle's army control was better than Yoda.

you can't, P just FF the side of the 3rd and you cannot ever walk this ramp. A 4basing P is doable if you manage a sick flank but the 3rd isn't attackable.
GOM needs to start doing some replay analyses man, would be nice to rewatch that last engagement. I would not expect a Terran with a spread out army + Planetary to get ripped apart like that. Certainly YoDa messed up something pretty hard there.

Oh yeah Yoda didn't deserve to win anyway, but neither Squirtle imo. Both have played pretty sloppily this series. Just why the heck do you pick CK if you're not sick with your lategame control

His attack was bad where he lost all his vikings, and he also missed the HTs with pretty much every EMP last fight. Protoss arent allowed to win fights against terran it seems

That one was pretty obvious - low viking number and poor focus firing. He could not take that fight.

That's the point. CK is a really good map to defend. Army in the middle and you can defend natural and third plus drops.

Well then it was a bad plan for the map, stop bitching about it. If you actually have an advantage vs protoss before they take their third you can attack them in pretty much any way you like as long as you don't 1a your shit up the ramp...

1. The map is awful for TvP 2. Yoda is an idiot to pick it since his lategame control is not up to standard needed to defeat decent Protoss lategame 3. Squirtle played awfully the whole series and still win since YoDa managed to be even worse.
Yesterday games were really bad too, the level is quite awful for code S atm

Not sure why Yoda picked that map.
im pretty sure he wanted to win with a 2/3 base timing attack, squirtle was just so defensive

Where did you think Squirtle was bad this last game !?? I mean he played really standard and solid in the battles. Not much to blame him about. It wasn't really the case for Yoda's vikings control... He didn't even had the right number from the start. To be fair, Squirle's first game wasn't too great, he had no anti drop defense and got a bit outplayed. But the rest of the series was pretty good for him.

1. Good TvP players do well on this map too 2. Yoda's control does seem lackluster 3. Well that's kinda Yoda's fault then.
And Code S still has by FAR the highest quality of play.

Bomber vs Sniper. That was beautiful.
Both of them keep throwing the game at each other on CK, Sniper did even worse vs Gumiho, who made code B lvl mistakes in his match vs Bomber. Huk got booped twice vs Gumiho. Some games were fun but the level of play was awful. Especially from Sniper and Gumiho.

Given the horrid theme of Coupling, the show is surprisingly good. I don't like relationship-comedy and cock-related humour that much, but the show is well written enough to make up for that.

Gme 1, well, he fucked up his pressure and that snowballs quickly in sc2, still awful drop defense afterwards. His control on the game 2 was a bit off (imo taking way too much dmg the 1st engagement) but YoDa screwed up so hard it didn't matter. Game 3 he was way out of position for the cancelling 3rd, his templars didn't fight except for 1 storm in the first 200/200 engagement and then he just a moved in the final battle (zealots hitting the pf for a while, at least 1 colossi too, so gud). Well the good version of +2 blink is done with +1 4gate pressure first to force units. Behind that you research blink and +2 and if you do it well, your attack hits right when zerg is trying to recover from the damage you did earlier

You really think so? I think it's been fantastic, but maybe I'm too used to Proleague now.
Some players have overperformed in an awesome way (MC/Bomber), and the games were fun for the most part, but yesterday Sniper threw away almost all of his TvZ by refusing to build brood lords lol (hint, he won the one when he built them), well Huk is Huk, just not code S level (but he qualified, even if you could argue that he could have lost in Code A). Imo only Life and MC have been really impressive, and there are lots of small mistakes for a lot of players (Gumiho vs Bomber is Gumiho losing the games alone...) but it produces funnier game than crisp and solid play because it allows back and forth games

It was losing the semifinals, not quarterfinals or grand final.
And especially in the Ro8, people have been making consecutive Ro8 since forever.

They're doing a phenomenal job in terms of attracting and keeping sponsors, especially for an ESF team. All we can do is speculate about IM's current situation with LG anyway.

I'm pretty convinced that thread was just " hey look at how many messages we can get you on your facebook if we ask " to show LG that their sponsorship is reaching people, if you read what he wrote carefully it doesn't really sound like " IM is in trouble " just that LG was doubting if their sponsorship was effective.
I have to download that huge hots match tomorrow which will like kill my internet. Anyone know an app or something that would allow me to watch these games on my phone? I got twitch but it only lets me view em live.

I agree.LG probably shared their concerns about how effective the sponsorship actually was for them, especially since the contract is going to expire soon (assuming that LG-IM signed for a 1-year-sponsorship). IM (obviously) seems to want to keep LG as their main sponsor.
Edit: But nothing to worry about too much right now. As I stated before, IM is in very good shape compared to most/all other ESF teams.

well deserved hyun for making hydras, they are just so bad you cant even break p who stays on immortals, cant believe he keeps doing this response to stargate
Yay Squirtle ♥ Though while it is nice he won this was just another series where GSL zergs are playing really funky this season. I wonder if the patch made that big of a difference or they have all decided not to use infestor broodlord so no more nerfs hit them :3
Every Korean Zerg has posted on twitter that late game is unwinnable vs Toss, so they're trying these desperate Hydra pushes to kill the 3rd it seems, but it's not working. Drops work I guess if it's not scouted.

has infestor-turtle into brood lords been getting record low win rates on ladder ?!
I don't understand either... Someone should interview those desperate zergs
If you followed twitter, you'd read pro zerg players (especially Life) saying that with infestor nerfs, protoss is too hard lategame if the zerg played turtly.
Just watch MC vs Curious, Curious did the turtle into lategame tactic, but he got crushed by the mass air + HT of MC.

It's a lose lose situation. If they win with BL-infestor, everyone hates them. And they need the fans. So they try to make other stuff work. Unfortunately, only Life can win without infestors (whether he builds them or not, he'll still lose them), and a couple of others like DRG.
god damn terrible play by Hyun.. i'm a fan of him but what the hell. no way in hell Hydralisks work for such a long time, hell it's rare enough that they even work at all... no infestors, no broodlords... would've been cool if it worked but i don't think this was the right time to show something cool. perhaps it worked for him in practice, i dunnno.
from my experience brood infestor is pretty much dead in pvz unless you get an enourmous lead early in the game, cant hold 3 base pushes and has weaker late game army vs defensive toss, its 2010 all over again

We've gone back to 2010 when zergs didn't know that infestation pits (and hive by extension) existed
Yeah, it seems zergs are trying everything else besides infestor/BLs now. Maybe their win rate is really low now after the nerfs. But it still seems better than some of these things they are trying.

i guess they want to prepare the transition faster, infestorBL is weak in hots and since this is the last season obviosly they want to try out better builds for the long term

No it wasn't. The IT nerf was always ment for ZvP, mass IT spam has never been common in ZvT.

I thought it was like 70% directed at PvZ or something? I mean, it's obviously gonna affect that matchup the most, aside from ZvZ...

I do follow 'em and I did watch Curious vs. MC. Still, keep going for drop play and hydras isn't effective either it seems, right?

No it wasn't. They made the egg nerf just for storm.

I might be wrong but I remember a b.net post that discussed this patch and said they are looking at TvZ. But I cannot find it anymore.

But since so many units are different from both races. Doesn't make sense to stay away from from it in WoL. Even if you make roach hydra work against WoL Protoss, doesn't mean it will work against HoTS toss.
On January 25 2013 21:59 NMxhendralisk wrote: there seems to be a direct correlation in making hydras (when not supremely ahead) and losing
Hydras are decent when you are forcing trades and putting pressure on the 3rd (both vs toss and Terran). But if opponent can saturate and keep third up to make max army, hydras are pretty bad.
Squirtle is so awesome to watch, if he doesn't get picked up by a Kespa team I really hope Acer goes for him. Would be a really good fit, plus he'd be able to play for Axiom/Acer in the GSTL.

Well, drop play has worked but it is only really effective if it is a surprise attack or you are really far ahead. When you get scouted, there are just too many ways to counter it.
Man I would have been so sad if Squirtle had went out already, only games I am really emotionally invested in these days I think, makes things so much more interesting and exciting to feel so invested in a game. Maybe Bomber this season too. Bomber vs. Squirtle finals please.

I dont know what you mean behind the scenes. Blizzard don't patch in secret.
Infestor broodlord turtle is getting raped on ladder as never before by air toss or simply good protoss mothership usage and engagements. This was nigh on impossible before.
I feel the need to keep repeating because people act surprised but the 3 nerfs to infestor combined are probably the biggest nerf in the history of sc2. Only that hots is coming out so its pretty moot I'd say z went from op to weakest race in one fell swoop.

Not so sure about weakest race. Infestor/BL is still extremely hard to beat as protoss considering the timings. BL/infestor is out WAY earlier than any protoss air army and it still does extremely well vs anything protoss has on the ground. It's just not completely unbeatable anymore.

Well, 4 out of the 8 zergs have made it to Ro16. I am not sure we can say they are the weakest race. And if you talk about nerfs, I would say the ghost EMP+snipe is at least up there with the infestor nerfs.
It just seems that zergs will actually have to try to attack with infestors BLs now instead of just sitting them on top of spines and make more infestors and BLs.

Pre-hive 3 base pushes were already very hard for Zerg to hold, win rates were never bad for Protoss because of how powerful 2-3 base all ins were. Now the 3 base pushes are even harder to hold with nerfed Infestors, and if the Zerg does get to Broodlords, Protoss can turtle with a mothership and get out the air army. Protosses didn't have problem turtling before, they just had difficulty making Skytoss work, now they don't.
It was that Protoss was stronger until Infestor/Broodlord, Zerg was stronger after. That seems to no longer be the case, hence you see all these Zergs trying to kill the Protoss somehow as they take their 3rd, to avoid the 3 base death push, or the late-game Skytoss turtle into loss.

Well, a 3 base all in is still an all in. If it fails, zerg still wins the game. The only thing that's changed now is that maybe protoss can now shift their gameplan. If they would have added gateways and chronoed +3 weapons as fast as possible with colossi coming out, they might now be able to revert back to a similar style to what HerO originally popularized, skipping colossi, going right into templar, maybe double forge to capitalize on the nerf even more. The point I'm trying to make is, if protoss do that, they have to start setting up for it early enough for zergs to figure out what they're up to and change their own plan according to it. You still won't be able to do a 3 base attack without having to do a certain amount of damage. So as for 3 base pushes, nothing has changed except that they're now harder to hold, which I agree with.
So the main thing that's changed is that there's now a clock for zerg as well. BL/infestor is not the ultimate composition that beats everything at any point in the game anymore. If protoss takes a 4th base or fails a 3 base attack, that's when it'll be most effective (as it always has been). Except now, if protoss gets that 4th base up and starts taking advantage of it while zerg just sits back on mass spines, protoss will be able to build an army that beats BL/infestor (I think). As it should be, if you stick with one composition for too long, you should lose to a superior composition by your opponent.

So? High templar are the end of the protoss tech tree in that regard. They still lose to Ghosts. BCs are the end of the terran tech tree and they lose to a composition designed to counter them. Every unit composition has a counter composition (or should have). Maybe zergs just have to start thinking about how many of their corruptors they morph. You can't expect to beat a mass air army when half the units in your army only attack ground >_>
So, if protoss forgoes colossus production to take a 4th base and then builds towards beating a BL/infestor army, why not mix in hydras to beat that protoss air army for example (just spitballing)? Zergs just have to get away from the thought that one unit composition is supposed to be able to beat everything

has infestor-turtle into brood lords been getting record low win rates on ladder ?!
We have seen 1 game where Skytoss worked. I think we will have to see a few more before we can conclude that this is the case.
That's because out of 19 maps of PvZ played so far, we saw only 1 game go to Infestor/Broodlord lategame, which transitioned into Skytoss win. Do you think all these pros suddenly forgot how to build Broodlords?
You know there was a time when after the Queen and Overlord buff when terrans were trying new stuff other than hellion banshee. And artosis was saying crap about how happy he was that the matchup was going to become less stale with that opening becoming less popular. Then suddenly terrans just kept on doing it just as much as they used to pre-patch after a few months of stuff.
Basically what I'm saying is, it's way too early to say anything because pros need to figure it out. Besides, right after the Queen buff, zergs just did not lose to terran at all before it started to mellow out again. If 4/8 zergs can make it through despite this latest patch then it's looking pretty good for them in a month.
EDIT: Actually I totally expect zerg to win more for the rest of Code S ro32. There are mostly TvZs left and for the most part that matchup wasn't changed that much...
And we actually see zergs trying different tactics with decent success. Drops, Nydus, hydras, ultras, mutas are all being used more. So it kind of nullifies the Zerg needs infestor/BL to win theory.
While 2P/2T/4Z advanced sofar, that is exactly the same ratio for players dropped down to Code A atm, I like it! Though at least 1 more terran player will advance since group F has 3 of them, but hey. =)

I don't know if you're paying attention, but so far, in 19 maps, there has only been 1 game where Zerg won after Protoss successfully took a 3rd, and that's Symbol vs Creator on Ohana with the drops and in that game Squirtle had just taken his 3rd and hadn't really mined much from it when Symbol attacked. Drops haven't worked the other 2 times they were attempted. I wouldn't call 33% a decent success rate.
Every other Zerg win has come from defending a 2 base all in, successfully denying the Protoss 3rd, or Zerg doing an all in. This further proves my opinion that Zergs are trying to kill the Protoss before they get going on 3 bases or dying trying. Essentially the Zerg metagame seems to have gone back to 1.5-2 years ago, where the main principle was that if you let Protoss get a 3rd, you have lost the game.

So basically what you are saying is that it is now reverse from before. Instead of Protoss doing 2-3 base timing. It is the zerg doing 2-3 base timing. And judging from the win rate, zergs seem to be doing fine with their early/mid game. So it seems like the NEED for infestor/BL was overblown.

They just gotta get better at reading the game then. Protoss doesn't just pop out with a 3 base all in. Their whole gameplan is shaped so they can do that attack. It's not hard to figure out if you do some scouting. Just gotta morph em overseers more often, ETC. If protoss is taking a 4th, they have to have certain tech out to do it (templar tech, some stargate tech). So basically, if zerg scouts that tech => safe, proceed with your standard plans. If lack of that tech => not safe, prepare for 3 base attack. WAY too often do you see zergs realize that an attack is incoming when protoss is already halfway across the map.

God forbid zerg has to do the same shit terrans and protosses have been forced to do for months.
Squirtle fighting!!! Can't believe B4 got through in 1st place though, that's insane. I thought for sure it was going to be Hyun and Squirtle, in that order!
Edit: With mass recall gone, mass Infestor/Corruptor is good against mass Skytoss now. You used to be able to go mass 3/3/3 Void Ray and have a defensive mothership sitting under like 20 Cannons at your natural or main and run around killing hatcheries and tech structures with a max VoidRay army and recall them as soon as you got fungaled, rinse, and repeat and literally never lose the game because to attack into you they had to fight mass void rays on top of an insane amount of cannons. With that option gone, Fungal obviously rapes air toss. Corruptors and a lot of burrowed infestors (and some overseers to snipe obs, make sure you don't lose all your infestors before you can chain fungal everything). You just have to unborrow like 4 at a time and accept that to fungal a mass air army once you need to lose more than 1 infestor. Without the defensive mothership, it really is a LOT easier to deal with skytoss, not imbalanced vs Z at all.
wonder if yoda is more aware that his race is the dark force and that that inherently makes it stronger early game for suspense and weaker later on because it's engineers can't build a good capital ship :D
edit: he just makes decisions i dont think pay off a lot. wanted to note that, if u watch most of the gsl zergs, iguess some of them are also kespa players like shine, they copied the overlord positioning of the kespa players, all except hyun so far on the new map. neo x i forget the name

What 3 nerfs? There is a fungal range nerf, and the IT egg nerf. Did they nerf the IT themselves already?
